October 29, 2012: We came to New Orleans to run the Jazz Half Marathon on Saturday and we stayed over three days to enjoy the city. Guy and Nancy could not have been more accommodating. They were warm, friendly, and very knowledgeable about the area. Their recommendations for activities were right on target especially the walking tour and Tipitinas. In addition, the breakfasts far exceeded our expectations including but not limited to: Eggs Benedict, quiche, fresh fruit, muffins, and plum pudding! The room was lovely, clean, and quiet. We never heard the other guests even though the hotel was full. The walls are so thick that sound does not seem to penetrate through them. I am confused by a couple of the negative review below because our experience was so wonderful. I did not want to leave Sully Mansion and I hope to return very soon.

We were in New Orleans to celebrate our daughter's 60th birthday and she couldn't have picked a better place. Our hosts were gracious and enjoyable, and couldn't have been more helpful in arranging a catered dinner in their back patio, in suggesting things to do and places to visit, and very especially, restaurants at which to dine. All in all, a most enjoyable visit.

We spent four nights at Sully Mansion. We were part of a large group that occupied all the rooms. In reading some of the other comments, it now seems possible that Nancy and Guy (the proprietors) are more comfortable with smaller groups than with having the Mansion taken over by one large group. I say this because our experience more closely approximated that of the wedding party (JoW) than the happy couple (jerrauldjones).

To be sure, the Mansion is a beautiful place and it is nicely located in the Garden District, with great proximity to public transit. From what we could tell, most of the rooms live up to the descriptions offered on the web site, though that wasn't true for our room. We were in the room with the separate entrance. It offered great privacy, but little else in the way of comfort. The furniture is unimpressive, the bathroom small, and the bed sags badly. So I would caution visitors to avoid this particular room.

Guy seemed to be mostly about the business; while not exactly rude, he was hardly engaging for most of our stay (he warmed up considerably the last night...). Nancy was often inexplicably mean-spirited, especially in her treatment of the younger people in our group (20-somethings). She chastised them for noise (although they didn't disturb anyone), for late-night returns to the hotel (although they were visiting the land of Mardi Gras and Bourbon Street), and even, on one occasion, for wearing shoes that she (Nancy) decided were inappropriately loud for the inn. On the other hand, she, too, was quite willing to help others in our party, offering suggestions for restaurants and sharing New Orleans knowledge.

So there may be two different sides to the Mansion and its owners. If you're a bit older and traveling as a single or a couple, I suspect you'll find Nancy and Guy helpful and the rooms (provided you avoid the one with the separate entrance) comfortable. If you're a bit younger, or traveling as part of a group of eight (taking up four of the rooms), I would caution that you might find Nancy and Guy sometimes perfunctory and sometimes rude.

My wife and I recently spent one of the most delightful stays we have ever had during the course of our 27 years of marriage (but who's counting?!)(smile!) For several reasons, we chose to stay at a Bed and Breakfast rather than one of the downtown hotels where I was attending a conference. We found the accomodations so very comfortable and welcoming, not to mention to delicious breakfast and the best coffee I have had. The innkeepers and their excellent hospitality were a pleasant change from what is experienced in most hotels. And, the historic Mansion's garden district location is outstanding, just a few short blocks from its many delightful and interesting restaurants and shops. Needless to say, we are already planning a return visit in the near future. Hopefully, there will be always be room at the Inn for us!
