“Like Staying at a Friend's Place, but better”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2013

Two nights at the Frenchmen weren't enough. My two friends and I stayed in a double queen, room 302 and we loved it. It was thoroughly cleaned before we checked in. A small tv in the room, but we were seriously not there to watch tv.

We got lucky and got one of the hotel parking slots (there's about 9, I think, in a private secure lot). Historic building, eclectic New Orleans decor and comfortable.
We enjoyed relaxing on the the deck, listening to the live bands playing on the patio next door.
A lovely clean little pool in the courtyard, which we took advantage of.
A continental breakfast in the mornings. Our room didn't have a coffee maker but, coffee was available in the reception area 24/7 so that was just fine.

Located just about a block away from the French Market. Lots of music venues and restaurants nearby.

If I had to "complain" about anything, I'd warn you that room 302 is ground level, no blackout curtains (uncovered arched windows above the curtained regular windows) and Friday and Saturday night (and maybe more) you can hear the people walking by your window and the live bands next door. But this didn't really bother us.
The tub was a bit old and had those squishy no-skid things pressed on the bottom. It could use an upgrade. I always wear shower shoes when I travel, so, no big deal.

All n All, We would definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: I would think rooms on the second floor and towards the back and North/NorthEast side of the hotel a...

I recently stayed at the Frenchman hotel and I absolutely loved it, I was travelling alone at that point and felt 100% comfortable and safe, the bars were right across the road I could hear them from my room and loved it, folk coming and going, if you want the quiet life go to a flash hotel in town, but if you want to feel like your in the thick of Naw'lins, then the Frenchman is for you. Its clean, quaint, and the staff are excellent, its not so far to walk to the main and other bars and all along the way theres shops and the markets and little eating places,no need to drive, the restaurants are right on the street as well as other shops. Dont be fooled by the fact that the Frenchman looks like an older place, it is older, but when you go inside its renovated and as clean as it can be,this would be my favourite place to stay and Ill definately go back and stay there the next time I go to Naw'lins.

Room Tip: I had a room on the bottem, and that was fine, folk do go back and forward to their rooms so if you...

We recently returned from a combo business/pleasure trip to New Orleans. For the pleasure half, we moved from the corporate hotel to The Frenchman Hotel, on Frenchman Street on the edge of the French Quarter. This was our second stay at the Frenchmen, and the place has improved. We liked it last time, but the place was a bit shabby here and there. On this trip, we found that the hotel had been updated some. The dining room, near the front desk has been painted, furniture updated, and floor gorgeously refinished. The pool has been resurfaced, but unfortunately the hot tub wasn't hot. Our room also had been painted and updated (particularly the bathroom). The staff was very helpful and friendly. This location is very convenient to the clubs on Frenchman Street and to all of the tourist attractions in the French Quarter. With the trolley stop nearby, it's very easy to get around. During festivals, there can be a considerable amount of street noise in the front rooms; knowing this, I requested a quiet room away from the street. They gave us one that was tucked away in the back and very quiet.

This hotel was a very nice historic hotel. The bed was THE most comfortable, amazing thing that my husband and I have ever slept in. Seriously, the beds were superb. The rooms were eclectic, and decorated in a very "French Quarter-esque" theme, which made the entire atmosphere fabulous. Now, keep in mind that this was built in 1865 (may have been 1860..) so it's on the historic roster, and it's been maintained as such. It's very clean and very nice to stay in, but it comes with historic aspects. The bathrooms are small and doorways are narrow. The ceiling of our room, however, was HIGH! It was practically vaulted! The staff were wonderful - have I mentioned that yet? They were AMAZING! We arrived VERY early (8 am) and they let us check in early since a room was available. Most hotels would never allow you to check in at 8 am without paying for an extra night, but they did! Then, when we checked out the next day (we stayed for only one night after a cruise) our flight did not leave until 6 pm. They kindly let us check out, but kept our luggage in a safe back room for us so that we could continue to roam around the French Quarter without dragging our luggage everywhere. That was SO nice of them! And the luggage was perfectly safe and sound when we got back. As for the courtyard pool and hot tub, they were very pretty to look at, and provide a great place for quaint pictures. However, the pool is small as is the hot tub. We wound up not using either because we were simply too busy (only 2 people can fit in the hot tub at a time so that is what I mean by small). Like most courtyards in the French Quarter, do not expect it to be crazily sunny while you swim. At least part of it shaded all day, in true New Orelans style. Now, there were two cons of the stay: The bathroom and the noise. The bathroom we had was nestled inside what must have once been a walk in closet. It did not feel cramped, and while it looked clean, there was a weird, musty odor in it that was rather unpleasant. Try as we could, we looked all over it and could not find the source! Our best guess is that since it's a very old hotel, that something in the pipes was smelling. This problem was mostly solved by shutting the bathroom door, but it had us question if we would stay longer than one night there. If that problem was fixed, we'd stay here an entire trip in New Orleans and recommend it to anyone. If you are sensitive to smells though (like we are) that might be a deterrent. The other downside was the noise. First, there are bars nearby so you can hear the jazz until the wee hours of the morning. If you like jazz, this is nice, but if you are trying to get a good night's rest before getting up early the next day then it might bug you a little. It's a personal preference type of thing. I loved that I could hear it, my husband however tossed and turned. The other noise component was construction. The hotel was being worked on and the construction workers were rather rude, in that they continued using loud tools until 2 a.m.! Right outside our room! I was pretty shocked by that. So, we rate the hotel 4 out of 5 stars. We would have rated it 5 stars had it not been for the smell (which you should not let deter you as you could not smell it in the main room, just in the bathroom) and the construction noise.

It was at one end of the French Quarter, so far enough away from Bourbon street

Room Tip: If you have heavy luggage request a courtyard room, as the main stairway for a room inside is rather...

We thank you so much for the review. It is so important to us to hear from our guests. We take great pride in our little establishment and love hearing when guests have enjoyed their stay. Apologies for the smell you referenced, we'll have to have our resident odor seeker scour the rooms. She's quite the bloodhound when it comes to such matters. I cannot apologies enough if the maintenance staff was rude and cannot for the life of imagine why anyone would be working a 2:00 a.m. but will have someone look into it.

Again, thank you so much for your review

Just got home today from NO where we stayed at the Frenchman. Loved the staff and our accommodations. If you love live music, this is the place to stay! Only drawback is the occasional firetruck responding to a call where it is located across the street. The patio upstairs is a secret getaway. I will be back!

Stayed here over labor day weekend and was impressed with the this small and charming property. The hotel has fewer than 40 rooms so service is very personal and friendly from the desk to the housekeeping staff. Rooms are all unique and have charm. The hotel is actually in the process of being updated and is looking good. Outside the pool courtyard is a pleasant place to relax while listening to the live jazz that filters over the walls in the afternoons from the lounge next door. There is also a really nice sun deck and event patio that seemed ideal for private parties. The hotel is technically in the Marigny but is just off Esplanade and is close enough to walk anywhere in the Quarter. I plan to stay there again and look forward to booking a few rooms for my friends as well.

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms are nice but smaller. So if you want to stretch out look by the street. It was loud...

We have stayed at the FRENCHMAN twice and will stay there again. It may be a little loud in the evenings, but that isn't a deal breaker. It's NEW ORLEANS! Staff is great and breakfast was fine. When you walk out the front door, you are in the middle of the action.
