“Great location with New Orleans feel.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

We have stayed at the FRENCHMAN twice and will stay there again. It may be a little loud in the evenings, but that isn't a deal breaker. It's NEW ORLEANS! Staff is great and breakfast was fine. When you walk out the front door, you are in the middle of the action.

We enjoyed our stay at the Frenchman mainly because of the fab little pool and the proximity of everything we wanted to visit. We were 3 people and one of the beds in our "triple room" was a sofa bed that buckled in the middle when you lay on it There was a little balcony overlooking the street (which we'd requested) but unfortunately the loud music opposite was far from the jazz or blues which we would have appreciated! Otherwise our room was OK, but we left feeling we could have done better.
When we arrived in the afternoon there was a bag of rubbish just outside our room with a dirty bra flung over it - which remained there the next morning. The staff were polite but seemingly not very interested in us to the extent of not looking up when we went in the (small) room. Going into reception to get the meagre breakfast felt uncomfortable and as if we were staying in a cheap motel.
Lots of grumbles - and yet after we left we phoned to ask if we had left something behind and were dealt with sympathetically and helpfully.
Perhaps they were just having an off few days?

Room Tip: If there's a sofa bed check it first.

We are so sorry to here about your experience with us. We have been redoing all of the floors so the breakfast area was shortened for a day or 2 while the floors dried. Generally the music is very much Jazz and Blues. The restaurant/bar next door sold and we are not quite yet sure what they are planning for their music venue. We do hope that you give us another chance. The floors in the lobby are being done now so we should be tiptop in no time.

Every room in the Frenchmen Hotel is different, so I can only vouch for one. Ours was upstairs, with its own little balcony facing Frenchmen Street, a street that folks unanimously told us is "what Bourbon Street used to be." Meaning: live music every night, spilling from multiple doors, just a few steps away. Warm and welcoming, not overrun, comfortable and connected. A friendly outdoors bar next door that remembered our drinks. Easy walk to the French Market, and easy to visit and then step away from the tourist crush along Decatur.

The room itself: all charm, gently sloping floors and ornate furniture, just a touch of genteel decay (like our bathroom doorknob falling off) though the hotel is undergoing some sprucing up. Most of the guests love the little pool and hot tub in the secluded inner courtyard: a wonderful place to lounge around and drink (slightly marred by the fact that on a blazing humid day, as during our visit, all the rooms' air conditioners are roaring hot air into the courtyard). The A/C, by the way, was well up to the job and made us very happy. The bed was huge and had a marvelous mattress.

The hotel was a great spot for a first visit to New Orleans, in many ways: it was close to but not immersed in the tourist zone, the street had an in-the-know feel to it (and a legendary soul food restaurant, the Praline Connection, just up the way!), and it felt authentic and homey. The drawbacks were few: the breakfast was sadly lacking (but just walk a few blocks into the quarter and eat there instead), the narrow stairs and twists-and-turns make it not a good choice for people with mobility problems (though there are ground-level rooms adjoining the pool), and in general the amenities and fit-and-finish won't equal those found in a hotel with deeper pockets. We also paid somewhat more for our room than we would have in a less-soulful hotel more central to the French Quarter.

Room Tip: Rooms facing Frenchmen Street are subject to the sounds of live music played till all hours and from...

Thank you so much for a lovely review. There is much to be said for the homey sense here, it having been a home at one time. Breakfast is, unfortunately somewhat limited by the city's permit process for what is allowed without a full commercial kitchen. Maybe that can change in the future. We would love to see you back. Hope it is soon.

We spent two nights here and loved the location and overall ambiance. However, one thing I look forward to when staying in a small non-corporate chain is friendly staff. The staff here was cordial but not necessarily friendly. Our room was cute but there were little details that make a difference that were missing - our window had a blind and no curtains, the bed had no bed skirt so you see a bare box spring fully exposed under the mattress, the bed wasn't even hinged to the headboard so it would roll away from the wall - all minor things that i would imagine would be easy to fix. We didn't really feel like complaining while we were there so really cannot speak to their responsive but I hope these are things they will pay attention to for future clients.
We would probably go back and stay here but would probably make sure we have a better room.

Room Tip: Rooms toward the inside are quieter.

Thank you so much for your comments. We do appreciate feedback where ever we can get it. Personnel have been sent out to inspect all of the rooms for any issues that might be remaining. You have done us a service and we thank you. We can only apologize for any staff that didn't meet your standards of friendliness. We will have a meeting with the staff to discuss deportment.

I used to live in New Orleans and I wanted to stay somewhere that felt like home, not a corporate chain. I cannot stress enough how perfect this was. It felt like I was home again, but better because my NOLA apartment didn't have a charming pool and I couldn't walk ten steps from my apartment to some of the best music in the world. The price is amazing for what you get. I'm definitely coming back.

Keyneshia, the owner, and the rest of the staff at the Frenchmen were very accommodating and helpful throughout our visit. They helped us plan activities around the city, gave us suggestions for places to go, and were generally warm and friendly. The room was intimate and cozy - perfect for a couple. There's a beautiful courtyard, and you can't beat the location.

Also, we offered to tip them on our way out, and they asked us to post this instead. Class all around. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Great for couples, but maybe not for families with small children.

We stayed here on our honeymoon after the 4th and loved it so much we decided to stay an extra nite. Unfortunately they were booked that nite but were very helpful in finding us another room at their sister hotel the Lafitte Guest House! Be sure and ask the front desk for suggestions on places to eat and visit!

We are so happy to hear that you had a wonderful honeymoon. It was good of you to write. We do love our property and the Lafitte is just beautiful. The staff thanks you for such kind words and they do love to share their experience with our guests so no one should be wary of requesting suggestions. Again thank you, we hope to see you often.
