“A True NOLA Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2012

If you are going to New Orleans, you don't want to stay in a cookie-cutter modern hotel. Place d'Armes is steeped in history and has lots of character and characters. It is well priced, located just off Jackson Square and within walking distance of most French Quarter attractions.

Most of the staff are warm and friendly, a few more reserved. Rooms are quirky, but comfortable. The only downside - parking is expensive, but that is the norm in the FQ. We had a courtyard room with a balcony which was fine with us. Quiet at night except for the animals (or ghosts) walking across the roof.

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms are fine - streets are quiet so a balcony over the street doesn't offer much.

Check in was easy; we were allowed to leave our bags before check-in and after we checked-out with ease. We had a courtyard room that opened up right onto the fountain area; couldn't have asked for a better view! The rooms are not modern by any means but the beds were comfortable and the room and bathroom very spacious. Trevor, one of the bellmen, was super helpful with calling us cabs and recommending places to eat. The location was perfect; only steps away from Jackson Square and Cafe DuMonde! The only noise we experienced was our neighbors upstairs in the morning and the occasional foot traffic by our door. Nice breakfast of pastries, fruit, juice, and coffee. We had an amazing experience and plan to come back many times!!

Room Tip: Courtyard View recommended!

The Place d'Armes is one of three Valentino family owned hotels in the French Quarter. It is located just off Jackson Square facing the Presbytere, which flank St. Louis Cathedral. This makes it accessible to the action, but far enough away to sleep quietly. These hotels are all very reasonably priced for New Orleans, but very low for the French Quarter (normally under $100 including parking & taxes). These hotels are very well-maintained & nicely furnished. This one has a complimentary breakfast. The staff at all hotels is great.

Room Tip: Try to get a room either on the south side, from which you can see Jackson Square or the west side f...

The hotel is definitely very well located...but...
- the women at the check in was very cold... As if it was bothering her to check us in...
- our room (201) was on the street... So, at first we were worried it would be noisy... But the street is actually quiet... And anyway, any street noise was covered by a very strong and constant ventilation noise (I guess the room is next to the room that takes care of the ventilation for the whole hotel). It is unacceptable for a hotel like that to have such a noisy room. The problem is that we only realized how bad it was once we went back in the room at night to sleep... Too late to ask to change of room.
- breakfast was poor quality...
- we were traveling with a baby but the hotel has no microwave oven that we could use to warm up a bottle or some food, no high chair in the breakfast room...
- the parking is very expensive : 28 + tax per day

It's a shame because this hotel could be really nice : the building is beautiful, with a very pretty patio... But it's a huge hotel, with too many rooms... They're just trying to make as much money as they can and forget to care for their clients...

Room Tip: Avoid room 201...

So- when you are driving down St.Ann Street and spot your hotel- you are thinking-is this a dive? Then you drive in and find VERY secure valet parking( your car goes in an elevator to some secret place). You check in and then you find the wonderful New Orleans court yard with pool. That is the New Orleans secret- the outside-not impressive- the inside-great. Our room was very comfortable and the service was great. A breakfast of coffee, tea, and a assorted pastries is complementary. A first rate restaurant is next door. The location of this hotel is within walking distance of all major French Quarter destinations.

We stayed from 11-10 through 11-13. We stayed in the Junior Suite 208. We had an excellent stay. The room was super clean. We made sure we took care of housekeeping and made sure the management knew how pleased we were with the cleanliness. Everyone working there is the friendliest they can be. Keep in mind, this is a historic building and not a new high rise. Our room was huge, we had no issues with space. The courtyard and pool were right out our window. Yes, the fixtures aren't brand new, yes the bathroom was a little small, yes the furniture wasn't brand new BUT when you book a place like this I think you would understand it from the beginning. Our main happiness in a hotel room is cleanliness and this crew has it. The rest of NOLA is extremely dirty, it was very nice to come back here to relax and recover from what you do in NOLA. I would not want a room facing the road nor would I want a 1st floor room in the main building. I must also say, LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. We walked everywhere and you can't find a better place in my opinion. I have NOTHING NEGATIVE to say about our stay.

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms are the best!

I booked this hotel based on the positive reviews in this site and others. I will start by saying that the staff is friendly and the location is truly fantastic. One block to Jackson Square, two to Bourbon St., close to everything in the French Quarter. And the building is cool with lots of history.

However, the accommodations fell far, far short of expectations. The rooms are small, the bathrooms are even smaller. Our room was hot the entire time we were there, even with the air and fan on full blast. I'm talking 80 degrees on the temp readout. In November. The shower did not drain properly, so you were standing in a tub of water. The carpet had stains and my husband killed a cockroach which scurried out from under the tv. It seems as if the standards here are just very low. Overall, we had a great time in NOLA, but I can't recommend this hotel.
