From the moment you step in to this hotel, you're transported to another era, when the Kingfish, Huey Long, ruled Louisiana and made the Roosevelt his favorite hotel in New Orleans. The hotel has been beautifully restored to its former glory - from the grand lobby to the Sazerac bar. For the price, the suites are absolutely one of the most luxurious rooms I've ever staying in. If you like quality linens, towels, and bath products, very comfy beds and flat screen tv's (not that you should watch tv when in NOLA) this hotel cannot be beat. The staff is especially courteous, professional and friendly. The receptionist (who must be Mariah Carey's twin) even showed us three different rooms before we settled on the executive suite. Hazel from housekeeping hugged me goodbye. All around, this one of the most enjoyable hotel experiences I've ever had. ANYONE WHO GIVES THIS HOTEL A BAD REVIEW EITHER HAD TOO MANY HURRICANES OR HAD TOO MANY MARDI GRAS BEADS DROPPED ON THEIR HEAD ON BOURBON! This hotel is that good!

I thought this was one of the most gorgeous hotels I have ever stayed at. The renovations are a show-stopper - the lobby and all the public areas are meticulous. To the people who said it is no more than a dressed up hilton or holiday inn - i strongly disagree. The appointments and accessories are all very luxe and plush - what holiday inn have you ever stayed at that provided suck thick and luxurious towels, had gorgeous brushed stainless and chrome ice bucket, pens, leather appointments, magnificent decor, etc. etc. We had a deluxe room and did find it odd that that there is no tub - but one must realize that the property is historic and this is a retrofit - we did not miss the tube - great shower - very deluxe plumbing with all sorts of sprays and shower heads and marlbe - (just like holiday inn - not).
The issue here is not really that service is poor - just that there is NOT any service. When we checked in - there were a lot of people arriving at the same time - The bell service was completely lacking - no one approaced us - no one helped us with our bags - we had to lift them up stairs. - same thing on checkout - we called for bellman - they said they would be right up - no one ever came. On at least three occasions no one made up our room at all and two nights there was zero or limited turn-down service. I did complain about it - i got a bland and stupid answer from the pretty talking head at the front desk - she had no idea what to do about a guest issue such as this. I did contact the manager on duty and she was lovely, professional and concerned. Clearly, service is a big issue here.

I’ve just returned from a three-night/four-day stay at the Roosevelt. And while there were some significant areas for improvement, I feel that some of the previous negative reviews are complete hyperbole. The Roosevelt is a beautiful hotel. The public spaces are no less than stunning. The rooms were beautifully and comfortably furnished. The restaurants and bars we frequented lived up to their classic reputations…the Sazerac bar is truly a legendary experience. Besh’s Domenica Restaurant served excellent modern Italian cuisine and the contemporary décor was refreshing yet fitting.

This is no Holiday Inn or Hilton Garden Inn. This is a fine hotel.

We reserved a King suite and enjoyed a living area, small dressing room with a wet bar, bedroom and bath. I was disappointed at first because I was expecting the large “great room-style” suite shown on their Web site, but it was actually nice having the separate areas. I know some have complained about the lack of bath, but Wow! What a shower! Multiple showerheads (rain-style, side-spray, handheld) were an indulgent surprise. The bed was extremely comfortable. I did not find it too soft, it simply had the feather beds and fluffy duvets that you find in most nice hotels. I know I am in the minority, but I found the two 42-inch TVs and the smaller TV in the bathroom to be overkill, but again we don’t watch much TV, especially on vacation. We had no problems with noise from other rooms, but we were located at the end of a hall.

The staff was professional, but I think the surroundings require a bit more polish and even friendliness. Perhaps because the hotel is newly opened, a “personality” hasn’t been established. This would go a long way towards elevating the hotel to the five-star rating I’m sure it would like to secure. The bellmen were the friendliest and warmest, speaking to you as you passed in the lobby. The bartenders in the Sazerac were great mixologists but not particularly friendly. The front desk folks were competent but their hospitality skills were lacking. When I mentioned that we were celebrating our anniversary and if they had a particular suite to recommend (with a view, etc.), the reaction was that she’d already assigned us our suite. OK, it was a nice suite but it was on a lower floor and there was no view whatsoever. In retrospect, I should have pushed but I hated to get worked up for potentially no reason.

My biggest issue was with housekeeping and, more importantly, the lack of promised follow-through from management to make amends. We checked in around noon on a Wednesday and in the evening showered and headed out for the night. Upon returning, I noticed the turn-down service was basically tossing a few chocolates on the bed (which wasn’t turned down). The chocolates weren’t even placed with the logo facing up. Odd, but no biggie. The next morning, I realized they had not provided clean towels the night before so I called down to request them. After an hour, I had to call again. They finally brought towels and we showered and we headed out to a fabulous lunch at Commander’s Palace.

Upon returning mid-afternoon, I found our room had not been cleaned and called the front desk. By five o’clock still no housekeeping. At this point, we needed to get ready for dinner so I asked over the phone and in person at the desk for housekeeping to clean the room after six. Hours later, we returned to find the bed made, but no room cleaning. No fresh towels. No fresh glasses (they had not even removed the dirty glasses from the side tables). No cleaned bathrooms. No emptied trashcans. I was very unhappy and called to express my dissatisfaction. I was told that it was unacceptable and that a manager would contact me in the morning to make amends. Three days later (and back home from New Orleans), I had yet to hear from anyone. We finally received maid service on Friday afternoon, after checking in Wednesday noon.

This is a hotel that has much to recommend it…it’s a shame to have it marred by less than impeccable service, much less the service shortfalls that I encountered. I so wanted to love the Roosevelt…I poured over numerous hotel sites before selecting it for our special occasion. We had a wonderful trip and enjoyed many aspects of the hotel. I hope that if we return someday, it will live up to its reputation and the expectations it promises.

I’m rating a “4” because I still think this is an amazing place to stay. And because I still have hope that a luxury hotel like this will address its flaws and make a truly great destination for one of the world’s great cities. And just maybe, I’ll get a call offering a complimentary pot of coffee or drink in the bar. That’s all it would have taken to make things OK.

We had such a fantastic time at the Roosevelt. They really spent the time to pay attention to the details at this property.

We stayed at one of the suites during our stay, which included a sitting area outside of our bedroom and a half bath. We stayed on the 14th floor, so there was no concern about any street noise. The decor and furniture were appropriate to the time period and atmosphere they were trying to recreate with the restoration.
We ended up having dinner at the Sazerac restaurant. All I can say is, "wow"! We are already foodies spoiled by the great meals you can enjoy in Las Vegas. The menu was sophisticated and focused on showcasing the great ingredients in each of our dishes. Each of us got a great appetizer and main entree, but the dessert was the ultimate experience...specifically the bread pudding.
In fact I would venture to say that was the best bread pudding I've had; I've tried bread pudding prepared many different ways. They took a traditional bread pudding recipe and dressed it up a bit, while still staying true to the flavor profile you are used to with bread pudding.
Finally, the service we received while we were there was phenomenal. Everyone there went the extra mile for us. Whatever we asked of the staff, they were very responsive and helpful. Alex at the registration desk was extra helpful to us for all of our questions and concerns we had.

I wrote a review back in August about how beautiful this hotel is - but when I stayed here in October 2009 for my wedding (Waldorf Suite - Suites are SO worth it), I found how truly special it is. Unlike the vast majority of New Orleans hotels - it is modern and meticulously clean while maintaining its historic charm. Most hotels in New Orleans are dingy and historic or modern and bland - The Roosevelt is neither - it is in a class by itself.
Regarding the prior complaints I have seen on TripAdvisor - I would say we also had one small billing issue while I was staying here - it was cleared up immediately (at 11:30pm on a weekend - pretty impressive). If you have a problem at a hotel like this, just ask, and odds are it will be immediately resolved. When we needed 10 ice buckets for flowers - I called down - and they were up within 10 minutes. When my friend checked into a room without a tub (each room is a little different...), she asked for one with a tub and she was quickly moved. It's not a big deal - just ask - that's what Waldorf professionals are the best at, taking care of your needs.

So, in short, from a former resident of New Orleans, and a frequent visitor to the city - you will not find a better hotel in NOLA - not at any price.
