The 1850 house is 3 stories of a typical middle class house in the most prosperous time in New Orleans’ history. It is a very tall and narrow house with lots of stairs both inside and out. It is filled with period furnishings and art pieces, very well preserved and quite beautiful. You also got a glimpse of the slaves quarters and the courtyard. It took us about half an hour to wander through the house. Did I mention that there are lots of rather steep stairs? I don’t know how much this museum would have been on its own, as we got a discount for buying tickets to a set of three museums – Cabildo, Presbytere, and the 1850 House. All are within walking distance of each other, around Jackson Square in the heart of the French Quarter.
