You can see the magnificent mansions of the very well-heeled. The tour buses have been banned from showing visitors to avoid the 'gawking' element. But the mansions really are beautiful and the Christmas decorations are quite breathtaking.
Currently undergoing renovations in preparation for Super Bowl so tracks are limited. But it shouldn't be missed. Streetcars have old wooden seats.
At the time of our visit, the St Charles Streetcar was not running on the city end due to track work. There was a bus shuttle between Canal St and the trolley. It is a beautiful trip sitting by an open window in good weather looking at the beautiful garden district homes. Get a $3 Jazzy Pass good for riding all day on NO transit. Well worth the price.
Every December my friends and I jump on the streetcar and ride up St. Charles to Canal Street. The old Garden District mansions are glowing with Christmas lights and decorations! Enjoy a walk around the Roosevelt Hotel to see their beautiful lobby filled with more Christmas lights and then either hit the Quarter or stroll back to the streetcar line for a ride back down St. Charles. Great evening fun with friends!
Part of the line is closed down right now for refurbishment, but the route from the Garden District to the end of the line is magnificent. Takes about 30 minutes and you go through some beautiful neighbourhoods and a couple of university campuses. Well worth it, if your only exposure to NOLA is the French Quarter.
