“Comfy bed, but insane water temperatures”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2013

We came with a group so we had a pretty good rate on our room. The location is so so in my opinion. Yes, it is on Canal St with the street car stop outside, but if you don't want to take that its a fairly long walk to most of the stuff in the French quarter. The area right around is sort of sketchy with loiterers, but they never bothered us and we were a group of 4.

The decor of the rooms was pretty up to date and the bed was comfortable. My main problem was with the water temperature. There was no middle ground, it was either so hot it was scalding or ice cold. When we tried getting it in the middle you would here a thump and then it would click over to scalding. We ended up having to take baths so we could get the temperature comfortable. A cold shower in the summer is not too bad, but during the winter its just insane. Our room was right by the elevator and the noise never bothered me.

I heard there was breakfast, but I never made it down in time for anything other than coffee. I never really got to interact with the staff, but they seemed friendly and our room was always clean-job well done house keeping!

Parking was 22$ per day and valet only. We drove around a bit and found another garage for 6$ per day.

Would I stay here again? Yes if I was on a budget, if I could afford better location and more upscale I would choose to splurge.

Room Tip: 12th floor was pretty quiet, window to the side street, not Canal

“Convention Stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2013

Stayed here for five nights to attend a convention. I booked the room way in advance and pre-payed so the rate was good.

The rooms are small and in need of repair. The bar in the closet was not fully attached to the wall so the clothes slid down to the left.

The rooms were clean and the bed was comfortable. The refrigerator worked well and was very quiet.

The rooms have very little soundproofing and the hallway has no carpet so sound carried very easily. You probably will wake up every time someone closes a door or gets out of the elevator. My room was as far away from the elevator as possible, and it was still pretty loud.

“Excellent value, very good hotel in questionable area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2013

After reading a lot of poor reviews of very expensive hotels in the French Quarter, we decided to take our chance on this one despite the reviews questioning the neighborhood. We got a suite to make up for the area and took taxis at night.

The hotel is not in the French quarter. I would say the area starts getting better after four blocks. And closer to the river, there is a lot of police presence. But the area around the hotel is definitely shady. Lots of people loitering on the next block. One taxi driver said it is worse going the other direction. Not a good place to be if you are not used to "inner cities" and are planning on getting highly drunk and walking back in the wee hours.

There is a trolley right outside that goes down the middle of the boulevard but if you just missed one, it is quicker to walk. To get to the heart of the French Quarter, you have to take it to the river, which takes out out of the way, then transfer to another line. It was usually quicker to walk. It was probably about 8 blocks to get to where you would want to visit.

If you are someone who likes to stop back in the room frequently during the day, you also will not like the location. The questionable neighborhood will make you not want to go back too often, particularly after dark.

But considering the poor reviews of French Quarter hotels, and the price differential, I would say it was a very good value. Our room was nicely remodelled but there were little places like trim where you could see that they started with something old. Things weren't perfect--one phone didn't work but who uses hotel phones anyway. One remote had no batteries but when I swapped them with the ones from the other TV, that remote wouldn't control the TV anyway. The bathroom sink was a bit small but there was a wet bar in the other room. Nothing worth complaining about.

There was an excellent hot breakfast every day with eggs, biscuits and gravy, bacon or sausages, cereals, donuts, juices, bagels, etc. But there is no restaurant on site. If it is late at night and you don't want to take a cab, your options in the immediate couple of blocks are limited. The Great Wall Chinese a couple of blocks away will deliver and there is a subway one block away.

The staff was friendly and helpful and the room was clean.

There was free Wi-Fi and a business center where you could print out your boarding passes.

I would stay there again. Having a suite and low price made up for the area, in my opinion. Cab rides were $5-6 and we could take a lot of them and still end up ahead. If I could find something similar for 50% more in the heart of the French Quarter, it might be worth it but I don't think I would have been able to. Note that there were a couple of high end hotels a couple of blocks closer to the French quarter on Canal that I would still consider to be in a rough area.

“Not bad budget hotel but location not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013

Stayed here due to lower rates and the fact that other hotels were booked. Not bad for the price, although the hotel is a bit worn around the edges. But the room was clean, quiet and there were no issues. Location is a problem - lots of people loitering around the next block (on the way to central business district and French Quarter) - so it is a bit like running the guantlet. Wouldn't recommend it for that reason alone for people a bit uneasy about that sort of thing.

“Good choice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

This hotel was a good choice in regards to price and proximity to the french quarter. I booked on line and got a price that was better than anything closer to the french quarter. Located on Canal Street. Still several blocks to Bourbon St. Put your walking shoes on.When I looked at this hotel on map thought it was a few blocks closer but still not a bad walk. You also had the streetcar at the door of the hotel, we didn't use it but only because of time constraints. Also booked this hotel because of its proximity to the cruise ship pier. Only 5 min. cab ride. This is a little bit of an older hotel but clean, breakfast was good. Don't let the elevator paint job scare you off, I reccomend that they change the paint job. Overall a good place to base your trip.
