Just got back from a winter weekend in Madison. I LOVE the Livingston Inn – this was my second time there. There are so many little attentions to details that make this a special place to stay (homemade biscotti, evening drinks, fabulous breakfast). The best part of the Livingston is the hosts Dave and Peggy -- I feel like they are my new best friends. They were so welcoming, gracious and fun! We spent an entire evening sharing conversation and a bottle of wine. The breakfasts were phenomenal too. They have an incredible spread for breakfast with many choices – egg & veggie strata and homemade granola with yogurt were my favorites.
The house is absolutely gorgeous – a gothic revival-style mansion. I know this will sound funny, but I love the little bathroom under the stairs. (Apparently this was the first bathroom with plumbing in Madison -- ask Peggy about it.) It is next to a storage area, which reminds me of Harry Potter’s cupboard under the stairs.
We stayed in the Lake Mendota room, which is spacious, but feels so cozy when you light the ornate marble fireplace. I think the walls must be a foot thick; I was surprised at how quiet it was in our room! I would’ve been happy to spend the entire weekend in bed, but then I would’ve missed out on the wonderful food at Alchemy on Atwood Ave. and Osteria Papavero on Wilson St. – so many amazing restaurants in Madison.
Last summer we also took advantage of their pier on beautiful Lake Mendota and the B-Cycle rental bikes in the park nearby. Biking is a GREAT way to get around Madison and there are these B-Cycle bike stations everywhere. What a great town and the Livingston Inn is the perfect place to stay in the middle of it all!
