“Arbor House Wows”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

My husband and I visited the Arbor House for the first time to celebrate our 4-year wedding anniversary in October. We were both thrilled with the beautiful rooms, the charming location, the helpful staff, and the accommodating service. I'm vegan, and every morning they provided a freshly made, healthy, vegan meal for me. We'll be heading back very soon for sure. Best bed and breakfast experience to date.

Room Tip: The bathtub in the John Nolen room was spectacular.

We stayed at the Arbor House for one night on a business trip and wished we could have stayed much longer! The rooms were clean and very comfortable and the food was delicious. Best of all was the very friendly and considerate staff. So great it was that I am compelled to write a review of it--something I have never cared enough to do before!! Thanks, Arbor House!

Room Tip: Cozy Rose and Ecovista were both lovely.

My wife and I visited the Arbor House during the winter months and we were both pleasantly surprised with our experience. All the staff we’re very hospitable. They allowed us to have an early check-in without any hassle. And they we’re willing to be flexible around our schedule. The little personal touches we’re nice. They offered us complimentary wine and cheese at five o’clock. There was also complimentary dessert served later in the evening. The complimentary breakfast the next morning was outstanding. The breakfast was home cooked with all sorts of side dishes available. Usually “complimentary breakfasts” at a hotel chain means a plastic wrapped muffin and some coffee. This breakfast actually felt like a meal.
We stayed in the John Nolen room which is located in the newer annex. There were many tasteful John Nolan themed décor items in the room. The room itself was clean with all of the amenities that you would expect. The flat-screen television was a bit underwhelming with a twenty inch screen. But we chose this room because of the double whirlpool tub in the bathroom. The whirlpool was a nice, clean, and worked easily. During our stay we also took advantage of the sauna room located in the back of the annex building. If you like saunas this is also a nice amenity.
Overall we really liked our experience and would recommend it to others. We used this visit as a one-night couple’s get away. We’ve never done a bed and breakfast before, so this was a very good first experience. The environmental/ sustainable living emphasis of the Arbor House added a nice touch of character. And we felt good about staying at a local inn rather than some big box hotel chain. The cost is a little bit more than I would spend for a nice hotel, but if you take advantage of all the complimentary amenities then it evens out. Overall a very nice place that is distinctly Madison.

Room Tip: Rooms in the newer annex (Nolen, Muir, Leopold) are better in my opinion.

Arbor House was my choice for lodging in Madison. Rooms near UW in conventional hotels seemed over priced and I wanted something nicer.
I got a cozy, quiet room with a fire place, the comforts of home, and great food, all in a wonderful location across from the UW Arboretum. I highly recommend a stay here.

The Arbor House is in an excellent area. Right near the beautiful arboretum and near many restaurants. The outside courtyard is beautiful. Bikes are available for guests if you wish to use them. The staff is friendly and helpful.
Our room in the annex was large, which is always a plus. Internet did not work well in the annex; at least during our stay. The mattress was very uncomfortable. Breakfast was a disappointment. For us, the special breakfasts served at B&B's are a fun part of the B&B experience. We are not big eaters or picky eaters, but the portions were small------extremely small; both in portion size and number of items available. There was a toaster near the breakfast area; we asked if there was bread or something we could toast, and there was none. We left hungry each morning we were there. Some reviews speak of great breakfasts with pastrys etc, but this was not the case during our stay.

The Arbor House is full of charm. The rooms are decorated with antiques and are cozy (without being too small). The innkeeper, Cathie and her staff, are extremely helpful and go out of their way to make you feel at home. The breakfasts are tasty (especially the savory pancakes and strawberry strata!) and there is a daily happy hour around 5 pm. In addition, there is also a treat served later in the evening. We had chocolate covered strawberries and citrus tiramisu. Some of the other extra perks we enjoyed were the free use of bicycles and 1 hour of canoeing on Lake Wingra. We'll be sure to return the next time we are in Madison!

Room Tip: The Cozy Rose Room is very quiet!

We very much enjoyed our three nights at the Arbor House. Although a little out of the city we enjoyed cycling the very handy bike path in and out of town which only took 10 minutes (the use of the Inn's bikes free of charge was a real bonus). The location is lovely in itself being so close to the Arboretum and lake Wingra.
The accommodation was good and spacious - we were staying in the Studio - and the staff warm and pleasant. We particularly liked the opportunity to meet other guests at breakfast served family style and for a pre dinner drinks provided for us each evening.
The local bar/restaurant, Jacs was a really good find, serving a wide range of food in a lively atmosphere and only a short walk from the Arbor House. Well worth a visit.

Room Tip: The rooms are located in two separate buildings - the Annexe a modern house and the Historic House...
