“SOOO convenient”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2007

There are very few hotels within walking distance of all the fun and exciting things to do in downtown Madison. This hotel was so very convenient and within walking distance to all of the State Street restaurants, stores and Comedy Club. It was right on the Capitol Square which made it doubly convenient for dropping off purchases from the fantastic Farmer's Market on Sat. a.m. and eight or more easy blocks to the campus for music on the lake on weedkends! We valet parked our car and did not drive it again until we left, so we had no problems with parking. As with other reviews, the steel doors are not insulated to the rooms and you can hear the goings on in the hallway and people slamming their doors, the pillows aren't the greatest and the air conditioning does blow across the bed at night, but you can turn it off and the carpet is a little buckled and needs replacing. But, truly, it was worth the reasonable price considering the convenience. The bathroom was updated and very nice and the staff, including room attendants, were very nice. The room was clean. Having a restaurant for breakfast ordering in the building was a plus, since not too many offerings for breakfast on State Street. I would definitely book this hotel again for a fun stay at a reasonabale price.

My wife and I have stayed at the Inn on the Park several times. It is extremely convenient to the outstanding Dane County Farmer's Market on Sat. mornings, as the hotel is located across the street from the Wisconsin statehouse/capitol square. The property has been significantly improved since our last visit a couple of years ago, but there is only so much you can do with an older building. The lobby is a bit larger and much better appointed and our room was upgraded from what we remember. However, the doors to the rooms need some sort of insulation around the frames to cushion and muffle the very loud slamming sound that occurs when they are closed, a sound that reverberates down the hallways. Also, the newfangled quick-flush water-saver toilets are much, much too loud, particularly for a hotel with such thin walls. The room was clean and pleasant and reasonably well decorated, the staff courteous and the on-site valet parking is a real convenience. But I think $149/night ($125 for AAA/AARP) is more than a bit steep for the overall premises.

When I made the reservation, I purposely asked for a quiet room! We were put in a room that had an adjoining room with a door. The air was blowing from slats in the ceiling down into our faces as we tried to sleep. The refrigerator was very loud all night. The pillows were flat. We went to bed at 10:30pm and there were people running up and down the halls blowing on kazoos. The lady next door was on the phone from 10:30 to 11pm talking about a guy named Craig that was a multi-millionaire with issues. She ran the hair dryer at midnight. The television was on all night very loud and I could hear every word. My husband finally got up at 2am to pound on the adjoining door and tell her to turn off the tv and turn out the lights as they were shining under the door. We had to get up at 6am so needless to say we were very crabby the next day. I realize the hotel can't do anything about all the very rude people in the world but I did specify a quiet room when I made the reservation. The walls were paper thin.

  • Disliked — Paper thin walls. Very noisy.

The hotel has recently undergone renovation, with new bathroom fixtures, carpeting, paint etc. It's still not a fancy hotel by any means, but I've been staying there on business trips for a number of years and, given the combination of service, convenience, location and price, I can't recommend it highly enough.

The staff is exceptional--they will always go out of their way to accomodate you, and everyone from the valet staff to the restaurant/bar, front desk and housekeeping staff is very friendly and helpful. Room service is inexpensive, and has the fastest delivery time of any hotel I've ever stayed at. And while it's not fancy, the food isn't standard hotel fare, either, and better than I've had at many chain hotels.

I've never had a problem checking in or out, the rooms are very clean and the valet parking is always fast and efficient. Also, free parking in downtown Madison, where parking is expensive and hard to come by, is a real perk! The hotel is within easy walking distance of all of the downtown sights and many outstanding restaurants and bars.

The only downside is the fact that wireless is available only in the lobby or the business center. Overall, though, the Inn offers many other conveniences that make it well worth the stay.

We stayed here one night for a wedding (reception on site). No early check in which kind of held us up. The room was nice and clean. Over looked the Capitol Square and the lake. The valet parking is nice but a hassle when we got there as the room was not ready so they held our items until check in was available. I like to keep some items in the car (which we could not do since we could not access the vehicle when parked) so I found this an inconvenience. Would not choose to stay here if we were visiting on our own since there are so many other nice places in Madison.

Stayed last nite at the hotel. First impression was good, valet was friendly and "on the spot" & check-in was smooth. Upon exiting the elevator to my 4th floor room...was greeted by torn plastic sheeting taped to to carpets, running up and down the hallway...there was no sign of any work being done! The room, a queen suite, was adequate with a bedroom and sitting area with a pull out sofabed. Opened the sofabed and there was no bedding...searched the room...no bedding...finally called down to housekeeping for some sheets. Then things really took a turn for the worse....waited 10 minutes to get an elevator back down...there are two, but one was broken. Didn't use the stairs..as they were labled as "emergency exits". When I got to the ground floor there was a queue 15-20 people deep waiting for the elevator. Not a manager in sight...no apologies or even acknoledgement of the problem. On the plus side...great free wireless...used it to write this review before leaving the hotel. :)

Stayed 10/28-10/29 at this hotel for Halloween in Madison. Had room 336 and shared with another couple. Room was nice size with 2 queen beds, nice view and was clean. Location was excellent and was chosen so the 4 of us didn't have to drive or rely on getting a cab at the end of the night. Walked to/from State Street and it wasn't too bad of a walk. The hotel has comp valet parking. It was VERY hard to get to the hotel since every road was being blocked off and detoured due to that nights events. The one bad thing is if you miss your turn, there are so many one way roads that it can take a while to get to where you need to go. Hotel is right by the Capitol. Check in was quick, we also used our Best Western travel cards to pay for 1/2 of our stay. Room rate was $159 + tax, which I don't think was that out of line for a busy weekend. Also, we had to give names of everyone staying in our room at check in. This was needed for re-entry after 11:00 pm. They had a person checking names/IDs when we returned around 3am. Thought that was nice that there wasn't going to be people running through the hotel that didn't belong there. Overall, nice location and it met our needs for the night. Noon check out was nice. I would only say that you can tell this is a very old building and does need a little updating.
