“the horribel smell”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2008

has all the equipment but probably should be checked by the health dept as there is an awful smell in the hallways that make you puke. no dishwater detergent etc in the kitchen.

My family and I stayed the month of June. We enjoyed it very much. It's less expensive than a hotel with much more to offer. The apartments are very clean and spacious and the staff is very helpful and accomodating. The property is wooded and secluded, even though it is very close to shopping, many great restaurants, the University of Wisconsin Campus and downtown. My kids loved the pool and the game room. The movie collection is unbelievable. There are many amenities at no charge so it is great to not have to pay for all the extras. We will definitely stay at Countryside again next time we are visiting in Madison.

An unbeliveable time!!! We booked our stay to visit some alumni, at UW Madison! We stayed through the World Famous Rhythm & Booms Fireworks Show. My son and daughter very much enjoyed the pool, the grounds were very well kept, and very staff was very accomodating. My wife very much enjoyed the tanning bed and the large Movie Library. We've already booked another stay for this summer.
We met a family from Germany, our children enjoyed eeach others company, overall a very homey experience.

PROS--
The people are really nice.
The price is about half that of any hotels in the area and so it is liveable if price is a major consideration.
Coin laundry (though expensive) is available 24/7 in a large clean basement facility.
Keyless entry using a touch pad is a great idea.

CONS--
To call this "corporate" is rather grandiose. The photos make it look much nicer than it is. The decor is kitschy, with plastic flowers and flea market artwork. A huge library of videos/CDs is a good idea, but people with jobs can't take time off from work to look for entertainment during the week and the weekend timings are pretty minimal.

The motto "all you need is your toothbrush" is not quite true. No liquid soap to wash dishes with, no lids for any of the fry pans or saucepans (& no aluminum foil to try to improvise with), no pizza/cookie sheets for the oven, no potholders, no measuring cups for liquids, no broom/dust pan, etc. It was a lot to buy to set up housekeeping for a place that was supposedly self-contained. Light bulbs were not of sufficient wattage (and trying to get a second bulb in the ceiling fixtures that took two bulbs seemed an impossibility) -- it was rather like living in a cave.

We were in an apt for six weeks in the lower building (Landmark Place), which seems to get less attention than the building where the office was -- the fitness center had equipment that was not working properly, the computer room had no printer, and the wireless internet was hit or miss (mostly miss). The persistent smell is a problem (it is a bad sign when a pizza delivery guy's little brother goes "ewww. this place stinks.") -- and since cleaning the carpets, plug-in deodorizers, and over-sprinkling with carpet deodorizer does nothing to help, they really need to figure out the real problem and take care of it. I've had to wash all my clothes and air out everything that was in my suitcases to get rid of the smell. Street access to this building during heavy snow is almost impossible. Management may know that there is access via another road that goes up behind the top building, but how would anyone living in the lower building know this since the parking lots are totally separate? The temperature control for the heat is hidden behind a heavy sofa which is very difficult to move AND even then it won't take the temp above 70 (which given the windows are pretty leaky isn't always enough nor for folks from warmer climes). I bought an extra blanket just to be able to sit in the living room.

  • Liked — The people really were very nice.
  • Disliked — The smell.

I was visiting Madison for a few months on business, and a friend of mine recommended Countryside Apartments. He had stayed there while building his new house a year ago, and said he enjoyed the experience.

It's actually in the perfect location, right between downtown and the west side, off the beltine. I thought it might be noisy, but its actually in the wooded Arbor Hills neighborhood, so you never hear or see the traffic. Its very peaceful and serene especially in the summer!

I could get to the Alliant energy center or the Monona Terrace, in less than 5 minutes by car. The apartments are very spacious, and furnished with absolutely everything you could need.

They have multiple brand new computer centers, with Windows Vista / Microsoft Office / Pentium Dual Core fully loaded computers, that are connected to their own private T1 line. Each master bedroom has a ethernet connection as well, and I got pretty decent wireless from my laptop (they have wireless coverage for all of their apartments).

The thing that made the stay the most enjoyable was their various unique amenities. They have an amazing DVD and VHS video library, with some of the greatest films of all time. Their property is pretty spacious so their are a lot of areas that are great for private BBQ's, or taking a walk, especially on their trails. I think they also provide free bike rentals for the trails, too, but I'm not sure.

Overall, for the price, location, space, and extra unique amenities, it was a great experience for someone who needed a home in Madison that was more than a hotel experience.

A very satisfactory experience! I booked the one month stay over the phone. A little more involved than booking a hotel room but overall it was worth it. There were homey touches thoughout the apartment and throughout the property.
We liked the work out room and the wooded walking trail the most. Unexpectedly nice. The buildings are older but have obviously had a lot of improvements since they were built.

Prices were pretty decent in March since they have some kind of discount for the winter and spring.
I would reccomend Countryside Apartments without hesitation.
I will probably stay there next time I visit relatives in Madison Wi.

My family stayed here for two months when we first moved to Madison and were looking for a house to buy. It was perfect for our needs and the management was very friendly and quick to respond to any requests. It was completely furnished, had lots of distractions for the kids and was much more reasonably priced than other "corporate apartments" in town. It is in a central location, on the bus line, and there are bikes available for residents to use for free. The maid service was a nice bonus. The apartments are older and a bit worn but we didn't have to worry about our young children damaging anything! We were very happy with our stay there.

  • Liked — lots of amenities
  • Disliked — cigarette smoke (smoking is not allowed here but some people did it anyway)
