I grabbed a quick lunch in Madison by myself today. I had been to Takara a couple of years ago, and decided to give it another try...Odana Rd location. Decor is ok, and as I said, it is popular and crowded at lunch. I had a spicy tempura roll appetizer, which was pretty good. The individual pieces were too big for one bite, and tended to fall apart if you tried to bite it in half. In Japan sushi is always small enough to eat in one bite. I also had the lunch special katsu don.......a casserole of rice, onion, egg and pickles with fried pork cutlet on top. It looked nice, tasted fair, and was very watery on the lower half of the bowl...like to much water was added, or not enough time for the rice to absorb all the water. Also the nice crispy fried pork was submerged in the rice and onion, so the breading got soggy. Very, very average dish. I like Takumi a lot better.
