Owner description: The majestic Roman Renaissance-style State Capitol has the only granite dome in the U.S. and inside has over 40 different types of stone from around the world as well as murals and handmade furniture. The observation deck, open in the summer, offers views of the city and surrounding lakes. Capitol Square plays host to state events throughout the year including Farmers Markets and Folk Festivals.

“A stunning building”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2014

Out of the 3 Capitol buildings I've visited (D.C, Austin and this one), this is simply spectacular.

Unlike Austin, there's no security checks to go through, and the building was a welcome haven from the humid, warm weather outside.

You can actually go through quite a few levels, and even up a narrow spiral staircase on to the roof terrace, for some awesome views of the city, and across the lake.

The building is IMMACULATELY clean, and incredibly well restored and maintained. The main mosaics in the dome area are quite spectacular, and the attention to details is superb. Craftsmanship in buildings from 150 years ago has just never been matched, in my opinion.

Even if you're not too interested in the history of the building, it's a nice way to spend a few hours. I was truly entranced by the beauty of the architecture.

“Excellent”

Absolutely spell bounding. The place is amazing. A marble and granite monument to civil governance. Absolutely stunning. The tour is humorous and light hearted but also very informative.

“Wowsy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2014

Fantastic. There is easy access. Though there are staff members everywhere they are unobtrusive yet helpful when needed. This is truly a beautiful old building. I visited with my 9 year old son and he had a ball. He had to take pictures and pose everywhere in the building. There is an outdoor observation deck that surrounds the dome; definitely worth climbing the stairs for the view. There are multiple staircases around the dome leading in different directions. It sort of reminded me of Hogwarts. Also at night the dome is brightly lit up ans can be seen for miles. It is truly beautiful.

“Amazing Building”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2014

This is a beautiful, classic building that holds it's position on the square and as a State Capitol Building. A great visit. You must lay on your back and look up at the dome. Also try to take the tour and get outside of the dome for a wonderful panoramic view.

Was a student in the early 70's, State Street was mostly boarded up. Today, the street is lovely! Can't wait for the Art Fair on the square!
