“Burgers on top of bloody marys while throwing peanuts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

This place has a burger joint feel with some extra fun thrown in. Not to mention the glorious food which is not limited to amazing burgers, peanut "bombs" exploding from the ceiling, and blood marys that come with a mini burger wrapped in bacon on top. Whether for a family event or just you and the guys/girls, this place has a fun atmosphere. And you can write anywhere on the walls. If you sat where I did, please look up at the light were I wrote, "Clarissa and her friends were here".

“Awesome Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

Cool place for burgers and beer. Try the bloody mary with a cheeseburger in it! Ask for a booth with a peanut landing zone and watch the "bomb" deliver them.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2012 via mobile

If you want burgers, there small menu is perfect. Nothing too imaginative, but everyone in our group loved their food -- kids loved it too.

“Awesome burger joint - 2nd best cheese curds in town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2012

AJ Bombers is a kitchy military-themed burger joint where p'nuts are delivered by a "bomb" delivery system (slammed out to your table on overhead rails, smacks loudly into the wall and the p'nuts fall down to your table). But don't fill up on p'nuts - they have the second best cheese curds in Madison ($4.75, second only to Joey's Seafood - and it's a close second place - we consider ourselves fried cheese curt afficionados - it's why we moved to Wisconsin!).
The cheese is molten throughout the curd, and breading is light with a flavorful spice mix that I swear has salt, pepper, parmesan cheese and something small and green - parsley, maybe? The chipotle ranch sauce brings some happy heat to the mixture. We had them twice and the first time, the frying oil probably needed to be a little hotter to really get a crunchy exterior - but they were wonderful anyways. Infinitely better than the hard cheese rocks some restaurants try to pawn off as cheese curds.
We also tried the pretzels - with cheese or mustard cheese sauce - which were toasty warm, a nice crust outside with warm melt-y bread inside (4.75 for three). The onion straws (2.00 half, 4.00 full) have the same seasoning and breading as the cheese curds and were pretty good (but the cheese curds were better). Other appetizers include sweet potato chips (2 half order, 4/full), buffalo wings (6), buffalo chicken eggrolls (5.50) and poutine - cheese curds and fries covered in gravy (4.50 half, 6.50 full).
The burgers promised as delivered. I had a Bomber Burger (7.75)- their regular AJ burger (4.75) plus their Stuffed 'Shroom burger on top - fried portabella mushroom with cheddar and munster cheese sauce that drips out while you're eating it (5.75). Sinfully delicious.
My husband raved about the Mad Sconnie, which was the burger special of the day - a gonzo patty that is half grass-fed beef and half Nuekse bacon ground together, with fried pickles (sliced longways) and Sconnie sauce, all on a Stella hot n' spicy cheese bun. Definitely a hats off to local vendors!
Burgers range from standard fare (single, double, triple or quad), build-it-yourself (you can even add a fried egg or avocado), three vegetarian selections (Stuffed 'Shroom can be baked or deep fried, black bean burger - 6.00, and veggie burger 6.00). There's a chicken sandwich for the beef-impaired (6.00). The weirdest one (that I haven't been brave enough to try yet) is the Barrie burger with bacon, American cheese and chunky peanut butter (6.50).
AJ Bombers doesn't have a children's menu, but there are options for kids - my daughter enjoyed a single AJ Burger, but there were also hot dog (4.75) or grilled cheese (5.50) options. Just warn small children to cover their ears whenever they hear someone yell "p'nuts!" because there's about to be a loud sound as the p'nuts rain down.
There's a full bar, and I imagine this could quickly become a favorite hang-out for college students, drinking buddies or business people looking for something a little less stuffy than their usual hang-outs. There's a full bar and plenty of character and ambiance in the place.
I would be remiss to not mention the staff. We went twice in January - the first waitress thanked us most sincerely for coming in because it had been a slow weekday (they hadn't had their grand opening yet). She was vibrant and helpful explaining the "mark your order on the paper menu" way of ordering. We shared everything from stories to bread recipes. We even let us write in Sharpie marker on the prolific walls, which are covered with interesting commentary from patrons and workers alike.
The second time we had a different waitress, who interacted well with our 7-year-old daughter and seemed very knowledgeable about the menu. We went the afternoon of the grand opening, which had celebrities from the Travel Channel coming out for the Food Fight winner's celebration (the Milwaukee location won) and to host a friendly competition with local Ian's pizzeria. The slightly- built bartender happily flirts as he bombs the crowd with p'nuts. I had told the host as we entered that I just couldn't stop thinking about their food since I had visited a week earlier - "I crave it, too," he confided, "and I work here!"
AJ Bombers in Madison is a fun, tasty Madison treat!
