We stayed for one night at the Hotel Ruby Marie for a weekend getaway. We booked the room on the phone, but I could see the room online that I was booking. It is a small boutique style hotel so there are not many rooms. The location is great, only a few blocks to the Capital. There are three bar/restaurants right in the building and a bakery/deli also. With out great senior rate we also received two drinks at Up North and a full breakfast of choice (Prime rib and eggs for me) at Come On In. That is only available on the weekends though. The other restaurant in the building looked good also but we did not eat at the Essen Haus. The room itself was incredible if you love the at home feeling at Grandma's house, which we do. Beautiful antiques and even a toilet with a raised pull cord tank. Beautiful Kohler fixtures also, including a whirlpool tub. There was a gas fireplace which we used to keep our room homey and cozy. The drawbacks are that the room was right on the street with old windows so it was a bit noisy. Also the heater clunked all night and you can hear the people upstairs walking around. Also the mattress pad on the bed was very dirty and stained looking. There was a nice kitchen area, but no microwave. A fridge and a coffee-maker though. Even with these drawbacks we would stay again because we loved this experience much more than staying in a standard hotel. And the rates are a very good value for downtown Madison. I would not recommend this place for families, but for couples it is quaint.
