I grew up eating from the Penn State creamery. Back in the day, the dairy products were not made bulky and smooth with mono and diglycerides and bean gums like most are now. At least they clearly posted the ingredients used.

This place is a definate stop if you are in Madison. My wife and I have had ice cream at a lot of places, however, none of them were any better than Babcock Hall Dairy Store. If you like ice cream give it a try! Price is very reasonable too.

I took my kids here for an afternoon snack, and this place is everything an ice cream store should be. For less than $2, you can get a 3 oz cone (a good sized scoop, but considered a "mini" size) in a wafer, waffle, or sugar cone, and choose from around 30 flavors. They also have other eats, including cheese you can take home. If you follow the cow prints, you can go up to the observation area, and see where the milk is processed: pastuerization, homogination, bottling, ice cream making and cheese making areas. Definitely worth the trip; only negative is parking in the campus area.

The historically gigantic scoops of ice cream dished up at the the Babcock Dairy Store are so large that they finally had to offer a small option. Some people say the best flavors at Babcock have long names like Orange Custard Chocolate Chip, Union Utopia, or Berry Alvarez. Check often for special flavors and pressure the staff to have them returned if you find one you like. Lobby for In the Dark, a chocolate delight served during Film Week or Sunflower Seed served late summer.
