“A chance private tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012

We were at the Chazen Museum of Art to partake in one of their tours. When it was time for the tour to begin, my husband and I happened to be the only two. The guide asked if there was anything "special" we might like to see. Telling her we had no idea of what galleries were at the Chazen, other than the one gallery that we visit as the displays change, so we told her; it was in her hands. Well, what a surprised that she was able to provide the two of us with a totally private introduction gallery by gallery; with a snap shot of each of them. Therefore we are now able to return whenever we wish to explore in depth any of the many galleries over and over again.

“Nice architecture & exhibits”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2012

Excellent new addition just finished. A good setting for the old collections from the old art museum and the new Chazen art collections.

“A bit of this, a bit of that, well worth seeing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2012

A fairly small museum but eras, media, and artists are very well represented. Just wish the bookstore had had something to sell that reflects the permanent collection. The special exhibit as of August 2012 is glass work - very interesting. Just the right size to give kids a taste of different types of art without overdoing it. The museum is part of the university and it isn't hard to locate but pretty much the only parking in the area is garage parking.

“Eclectic collection of art”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

This is one beautiful Museum in a fabulous location. Our docent was so knowledgeable, she brought every piece of art to life. Each room offers one more diverse type of art than the next -sculptures, pictures, glass exhibit. We could spend 8 hours here and not see everything. . . how could this possibly be offered for free? A definite must see if you are visiting Madison.

“Interesting exhibits, fun visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2012

I was surprised at the size and quality of this museum. Since it is a university art museum, I was expecting it to be much smaller. I enjoyed the special exhibit which was various pieces of studio glass (as of July 22, 2012) which I found included a lot of variety, and was something different. I didn't have time to completely explore the permanent collections, but they seemed nice after briefly walking around. I would suggest allowing at least 1-2 hours (or more) for this museum. However, since it's free, it's worth stopping by even for only a few minutes. It is right on campus, and at the end of State Street (so about 7 blocks to the capitol). Nice area to walk around, basically on the border between campus and downtown (technically on campus). Enjoy!
