I had stayed at this hotel June 28th through June 30th. When I first arrived I was surprised to hear that I supposedly checked in on June 27th, which is impossible because I was not there. Instead of the Front Desk person saying that they will get it fixed, I sat there and argued with her about when my reservation was and was not. I tried to show her the email that I got from the Howard Johnson website, but she was not interested in my email to get the problem fixed. After spending what was probably 10 minutes of arguing with her that I wasn't there and I was not going to pay for an extra night, she finally said that it would be fixed.
This problem continued when I checked out on June 30th. They printed the receipt out and the extra night was still charged on the account. I proceeded to tell her the whole problem and say that if this does not get fixed that I will be calling my credit card company with a despite of the charge. She admitted that this was a problem and it was a problem she could not fix, but she would forward it to the person who would fix it. However, it did not get fixed, nor did I receive a phone call from Howard Johnson to get it fixed. As a result, I had to call my credit card company and start a dispute which adds to this problem because now I have to deal with Capital One and supply documentation. This whole problem could have been avoided if someone just did their job, which Howard Johnson did not. I do not know how they could have screwed this up when I did it all online, but my theory is, when you make a reservation online, it gets sent to the local hotel and they have to manually input it into the system. All I know is, my reservation was for two nights and they had me down for three. Not my mistake.
I am sure this will get cleared up, but it is a huge inconvenience.
Other than the problem with horrible communication and customer service, the hotel itself is clean and has plenty of parking. The hotel has a game room, along with a pool, fitness center, and a hot tub.
The hotel seems to be in amidst of being remodel and it seems to be a good change. The hotel is bi-level with an elevator, but the elevator does not go to the the main parts of the hotel. The elevator is only attached to hotel lobby area. Forewarning, the whole hotel is not entirely handicapped accessible.
The ice machines don't work. I had went to all the ice machines in search of ice and could not find ice. I told the front desk about the problem and I got a lukewarm response about the ice machines. They said that if they were running that means they were producing ice. Well...okay....that still doesn't solve the problem of not having ice.
Would I recommend this hotel? Meh....I suppose so, but beware of all the problems that will come with staying at this supposedly $110 dollar a night hotel.

We are in the process of a remodel, we just recieved new beds for the whole hotel, new work out facility, and we also just reupdated our largest indoor pool in madison! We do take pride in cleanliness and our friendly staff. Please accept this as an apology and we hope your experience doesn't deter you from staying at Howard Johnson Plaza in the future.
