“some things are best left to the memory”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2012

the edgewater hotel was a place to be and a place to be. i was recruited to play football there years ago and have returned through the years. on my last visit, there was no one there. the night before and after the game was like a ghost town.

i am told a "local" blocked a recent sale attempt but another is succeding.....i do not know the reason for blocking but it has to be one of madison's premier properties and one of madison's biggest blemish.

there is not much good to say except: look out the window and remember the way it was and imagine the way it could be...

i say this all with a heavy heart

Room Tip: get a room with the best view possible as this is the best part of the hotel. lobby for a new hotel

“Ick!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2012

Everything is old and musty and there were several insects. (There were no bedbugs, just to be clear.) Clearly they are facing financial strains. They provide cheap toiletries, the towels are rough, and as others have said, it's very old. It's a lovely setting and someone needs to buy it and fix it up! Finally, there is spotty Wi-Fi when it hooks up at all.

“A "just getting by" hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2012 via mobile

Not what I expected from what they say is a charming hotel. If charming meant old and outdated then yes it's charming. After check-in getting to the rooms took an effort because the floors are numbered oddly. Floor 7 is actually going down in one elevator and the lobby is actually L3...so forth and so on. The lobby has outdated fixtures, peeling wallpaper, and god awful carpet that doesn't looke like it has been cleaned in a while. The rooms are big but old and the carpet has a soapy, slippery feel to it when barefoot. The thermostat doesn't work because the AC unit is separate from it. Very hard to adjust water temperature in the tub and the first gallon of water flows brown liquid. Is the water straight from the lake? My company booked this place so I had no choice but I wouldn't recommend it for leisure.

The pier has a nice view but the staff appear to not care. Took me several minutes to get a water, longer to order so I just have up and ordered a pizza. The cooks played hacky sack in between orders.

I scheduled shuttle to the airport and called to confirm later in the day. My name wasn't on the list.

This is a nice area and if the hOtel put a little effort this place would be nice. It just seems like the are just getting with what they have, and that shouldn't cut when there are other hotels that charge less in the area

“Quaint & Picuresque”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

My husband and I both graduated form UW and drove past the Edgewater for 30 years or so. We finally stayed there and had a wonderful time. Yes, it is old but very clean and well maintained. The staff was very helpul and friendly. The Pier restaurant is (was) the best kept secret in Madison! A wonderful place to have a drink and snack and watch the sunset. We had a suite which was very roomy and offered a partial view of the lake. I hope it retains its charm after the remodelling.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the extra room of the suite and were pleasntly surprised by the lack of street noise.

“Excellent Place to Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

I had stayed here on business between August 27 and August 31 and found it to be an excellent spot to stay and relax. The Pier Bar and Cafe is excellent; the staff is extremely courteous. The food is also good; one has the additional options of dining at the nearby restaurants located in State Street; proximity to the capitol building is another great advantage. I heard that they are likely to tear it down and build a brand new hotel, watch out!!
