“Good place to shower and sleep”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2010

We arrived in Cortez late, around 10pm, after a full day of hiking in the Canyonlands Needles. We wanted to get an early start to Mesa Verde the next day, so we just needed something cheap, but clean and offered a good night's rest. The Tomahawk Lodge was great. We went to the lobby and the lady (I think she's from Poland) was very friendly--we even heard all about how she and her husband had tamed a wild cat (which was sitting by the door and greeted us on the way in--very cute). We were given room #2, which was near the main office. Everything was very clean, including the bathroom. We had some good hot showers, plenty of hot water. She helped us find a place to eat dinner, since surprisingly, everything in that town closes at 10pm except the Denny's. In the morning, we had an early start, but did notice quite a bit a road noise since a lot of big trucks drive by right outside. It didn't really bother us during the night, though, so if you're planning on sleeping in, you might want a room further back. For us, it was fine. For a no frills place (not even an alarm clock--we used our cell phone alarm to wake us up) this place worked great. There was some hot water/coffee available to us in the morning in the main office, which was nice. There was a pool, but it was empty. It really didn't matter to us as we wouldn't have used it anyway. We're glad we didn't pay 3 times at much at one of the more expensive places in town. Definitely would stay here again.

Stayed here for one night - this is a great place to stay before visiting Mesa Verde NP. Not fancy, but clean and well maintained. No objectionable odors in the room, AC worked fine and iternet connection was fast enough to get the job done. Beds were inner spring mattresses and a bit noisy, but comfortable. Will stay here again.

We visited Cortez and Mesa Verde National Park in May 2010 and selected the Tomahawk Lodge for our 2-night stay. We were thoroughly satisfied with the accommodations and location. My wife commented that the room was spotlessly clean; even the baseboards showed no dust. Later in our trip we stayed at some higher-level chain hotels and though their rooms may have been a little larger they were less quiet and clean than the Tomahawk. The wireless Internet access connection was a breeze to connect to and quicker than the access found in most hotels.

Your choices for lodging in Cortez are limited and all are over-priced, but the Tomahawk Lodge is and excellent value and provides a clean, quiet and convenient place to spend the night after a wonderful day in the park.

Check out the Ute Coffee Shop for a great cooked-to-order breakfast - lots of local folks eat here.

I stayed at all budget motels on this trip and found this motel to be one of the best. The room and property were spotless. The furnishings were the quality of most chain motels that are priced higher than this budget rate. I'd definitely stay here again. It's very convenient to Mesa Verde. Cortez has good restaurant choices - and is cheaper than Durango.

I stayed in this motel in 1974 on my first cross country trip. When we planned a trip to see our daughter in Colorado this winter, I was excited to see that it was still in use. I was also happy to see such good reviews. The owner is a very lovely lady. The room was very clean, comfortable, and reasonably priced.

The owner, a native of Poland, is sweet as can be and welcomed us with a gracious smile and a nice chat. We had two carloads of six adults and four children under 12 headed to New Mexico and stayed here midway through the long trip. We were booked in three adjacent rooms that were modestly decorated but everything was clean and functional. Nice part, for families, is that each motel room had one of the beds in another room for privacy and better sleep. So each room was actually two small rooms.

stayed for 1 night having driven around cortez for a few minutes and seen a few scary looking motels! for $49 we got a great double room which was spotlessly clean- much cleaner than a lot of the chain motels we have stayed in over the past few weeks. the owner is really friendly too and although our room did not have a fridge or microwave she offered to heat anything up we wanted or free ice to cool anything down. very impressed.
