“Misled”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2008

I just returned from 8 days at the Life Resort with three friends. Our main purpose for visiting the Life Resort was to participate in the cleanse/detox program, which was advertised on their website. Although the resort is quite lovely, the program should be suspended until it is revamped.

The Good:

- The resort grounds are lovely. The resort overlooks small islands and a fishing village, so there are colorful boats bobbing in the water.
-The rooms are spacious and relatively well appointed - very good value.
-Spa treatments by Ms. Phuong were really good - another good value.
-WIFI and 2 computers available to guests.

The Bad:

-The food portion of the program was completely unacceptable. A) The nutritional value of the food program is questionable. Several of t he 'fresh' juices tasted like they were from a package. On the healthy eating days, we were served food soaked in oil and white rice, as well as fruit coated in sugar. Not appropriate for a true detox/fast, even a mild one. B) The restaurant staff had no idea of the program, so they continually brought us wrong items and asked us to sign for items included in our package. Managing the program on our own prevented us from completely relaxing and enjoying it. C) The fruit on the breakfast buffet was swarmed by gnats...very unappetizing! D) The quality of the food and fruit drinks was very inconsistent throughout our stay.

-Other than when speaking to a few management level staff members, communication was a real problem. To make this worse, instead of admitting that they did not understand the staff would simply say 'yes' to any question/request. This resulted in frustration and confusion for us on several occasions. While I acknowledge that we are visitors in their country, English is the business language at this resort so I found this situation unacceptable.

- Additional issues: beds are uncomfortable, management reprimanding staff in front of guests, inconsistent and inaccurate information provided by front desk staff, spa staff chatting with each other throughout spa treatments, many tour groups.

We communicated our concerns to management early in our stay and they attempted to resolve the issues, but also told us that they are having trouble retaining staff once they train them. Given comments by other guests, it appears that our issues were experienced by others.

1. Arrived at the resort at 9.30pm, after a long 5 hour drive, were greeted by staff that simply weren't very happy, or jovial. We were escorted to the wrong room. The staff member tried to open the door with the wrong key, and it wouldn't open, as it was the wrong room, with someone else in it! Then he took us to the right room, and tried to open the door - the door opened partially, but was locked with the latch, from inside. The lights were off - but clearly a TV was on. We could hear scuffling. Eventually 2 staff members unlocked the foor, didn't say anything and walked out. Obviously they didn't think we were coming, so they were in our room, watching TV - no apology, no admission. We entered this room, and there was a shower, but no bath, as we'd previously requested. So we went back to Reception and raised our concerns. They told us nothing was available with a bath, as the rooms hadn't been cleaned yet (even though the resort was half empty).
2. Eventually the seemingly unwilling staff member unhappily gave us the keys to a room. We were shown to this room (which had a bath) - it was perfectly clean & ready for use.
4. Most staff members do no speak english very well - at this resort - which caused us all sorts of problems. Communication is imperative if a person wished to have a nice, complication free, stay.
5. We spoke to 1 staff member, who did speak English well - he advised us of a place to go to dinner, in town. We approached the front reception desk 2 hours later and asked the girl to book a cab, to take us to the recommended restaurant. We got there, and sat down, 20 mins later, noticing that the name of the restaurant was different to the advice we had been given. No one spoke English at the restaurant, and the menu had nothing that we were interested in. We suspected that we were not at the right restaurant. We didn't eat anything. It was then fairly late and we were starving. We decided to leave and found it very difficult to get a cab, as the language barrier in the restaurant was extreme. Eventually we got back to Life resort, where we approached the same receptionist to ask if she had in fact sent us to the correct venue? She looked at us and said, "Yes". Then upon further examination, she admitted that she sent us to another restaurant, as she thought that this one would be better! You can imagine our frustration at this stage.
6. Room service was then ordered - which ended up being absolutely terrible. The food that we were given, was relativeley expensive, and extremely low quality, cold and simply tasted strange!
7. We spoke to the resort manager, the next day, who spoke clear English. She was aware that these issues existed and offered a free session at their day spa, for myself and partner.
8. Next day - we asked a 'western' supervisor at the resort what activities were in town, etc. She then spoke to one of the Vietnamese staff members, who told us that there were plenty of shops open (despite TET festivities) and would book us a Cab. So, we went back to our room, got ready and were all set to go into town. We went back to reception, and another staff member told us that no shops were open whatsoever(????!) Had we not confirmed this, we would have travelled a long way into town - to find out that everything was shut! ;-(
SUMMARY - this place looks beautiful. Attention to detail is great - in terms of surroundings and visual appearance. But when it comes to service and being made to feel welcome by happy, caring staff members - the resort falls to the bottom of the heap. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who wishes to enjoy a nice relaxing holiday - we have never worked so hard, as when we stayed at Life Resort.

The hotel has a peaceful charm, all of the architecture is done in a very simple, yet elegant style that is beautiful! The staff is so helpful, and even when there are language barriers, they do their best to help- we are in their country, with their langauge! It's well worth a visit to the Life Resort. And, its worth taking a taxi into Quy Nhon to get a taste of REAL Vietnam... and all its charm. It's worth taking a stroll through town- not on a tour- and try some local foods like Banh Xeo or Bun Thit Nuong. The food at Life Resort is exceptional- and much below US prices for the same fare... more expensive than local foods- but still good for the value! Enjoy the get away!

Quy Nhon is a very beatiful spot - but over rated here at TripAdvisor. We chose this spot due to the rating - and was disappointed.

Life Resort is located at a beatiful spot at the sea - but the waves are too big for swimming unless you're a very good swimmer. The pool is fairly small - so with a full hotel it gets crowded.

If you compare price to value this place it below average! The food in the restaurant is quite expensive - US price level - which is expensive when compared to vietnamese prices. I wonder if the staff get the extra money - or some rich invester from abroad.

The staff does not speak any english at all. They are very friendly and try hard - but if you have an issue you must be patient to get it solved. We started at a room without hot water - and it took more than 1 hour to explain the problem - and get it solved.

If you come only to relax and rest for a couple of days, and are above 55 years of age I presume this place is ok (have to wait some years to find out). Else - stay away!

We visited the city of Quy Nhon nearly. We had read it was the next big tourist spot in Vietnam - in between Hoi An and Nha Trang. We don't believe this will happen. The city has a beatiful coast line with a very nice beach. But the russion style hotels destroys everything and we don't think it will ever be a nice place to go.

The best thing to say about Quy Nhon is Barbara Dawson who owns the Kiwi Connection, a local tour operator. If you need to do a trip in the surroundings of Quy Nhon talk to Barbara. The prices are 1/10 of the prices offered at the life resort - and the picnic lunch very good.

  • Liked — The location is indeed beatiful
  • Disliked — Far to expensive if compared to what you get

We stayed at the Life Resort Qui Nhon for 3 nights at the tail end of our 3-week trip. It was a great place to relax. All rooms have a balcony with an ocean view. Ask for rooms on the second and third floors which offer a better view than those on the first floor.
Rooms were spacious and tastefully decorated with a Cham theme. We enjoyed sitting on our balcony watching the sunrise every morning.
The food was excellent, and very reasonably priced, definitely less expensive than the Sofitel Vinpearl. The "Flame Grill Squid" was to-die-for. For dinner, in addition to the printed menu, they usually offered 3-4 selections of fresh seafood "catch-of-the-day" prepared in any way you want for about $10. Do try some of their signature “Life” health drinks, they were quite good.
The beach was nice and well maintained. The ocean was blue and nice to look at but was a little rough to swim in at that time of the year.
I had a couple of massages. I recommend requesting a masseur because the female staff’s hands tend to be a little weak.
We didn’t take any tour while we were there, but the river tour photos posted below by a reviewer from London looks amazing.
All the reviews below are true; I don’t have much else to add except a few photos.

We had 6 nights here at the end of our 3 week trip to VIetnam in March.

Although the website and reviews all looked fantastic we were uncertain what to expect from the resort, particularly as we were driving form the airport for 45 minutes to what seamed like the middle of nowhere.

But we were absolutely delighted with our choice as soon as we arrived. The welcome was friendly and the peace and tranquility of the resort hit us immediately.
We had a superior room on the third floor - it was beautiful. Uninterupted views of the bay directly below...simple, clean and tastefully designed.

The staff were attentive but descrete...never did we feel smothered but at the same there was always someone at hand to help!

The food was fantastic and not much more than we had been paying in the cities. The restaurant was great and we also enjoyed room service from the bar menu, sat on the balcony of our room overlooking the bay lit with fishing boats! The beach picnic is also worth a try!

The breakfast was fantasic....I've never see such choice, all local produce, gorgeous fruits, juices, pastries, pancakes, pho, cooked breakfast - anything you could possibly want!!! and sitting eating it outside with the mountains on one side and the ocean the other doesnt get much better!

We only used the spa/massage facilities a couple of times but these were cheap and set in a gorgeous wooden huts in the trees.

This break was to relax and do nothing ...and this hotel is perfect for that...and at a great price! Not much around locally if you want to get and about but ideal for lazing in the sun, eating beautiful food and being pampered! Flip flops, bikini, and a sun dress is all you need for the duration!

Can you tell we liked it????!!!

From the moment we walked into the hotel we had a very special, warm welcome from the General Manager and his staff. We were given an upgraded room on the top floor, which had every modern facility we would need.
In the dining room the staff were aware of every attention to detail, barbecues excellent and in the fact the whole menu was presented with health and well-being in mind.
There is a spectacular infinity pool, a private beach, islands and fishing village belonging to the hotel. It is Dutch owned but managed by a new German guy - who is very enthusiastic and attentive at every opportunity without being a nuisance.
The hotel is completely isolated from any other commercialism on a beautiful stretch of coast, but the hotel is very happy to order taxis, and have mountain bikes to borrow, free of charge. (However, one warning, it is quite hilly.)
The thing that most impressed us was that every sun-bed and patio chair had cream cushions, which were immaculate (had they been laundered every night?) and guests were given plenty of luxurious cerise towels to use.
We booked 3 nights but it was so good we extended our stay. This was luxury at reasonable price, however when we asked to book their hotel in Hoi An, sadly it was full. In the future they are to extend their group of hotels to include boats on Halong Bay.
I can't praise the management enough.
