We did not stay at the hotel, but visited for a day. The buffet was great and had a wide variety of items from local cuisine to sushi to European and western dishes. Lots of fruit and full salad bar too. I saw some kids with mini burgers and fries too. After brunch we went to the outdoor spa; there are men's and women's changing areas that are quite small but fully equipped with showers and lockers (maybe there is more than one changing room). Different hot tubs and soaking pools at different temps including the little fish that "bite" your feet. Towels were provided as well as swim caps but they were only needed in the skimming pool. It was nice that they also walked around with drinks. Nice day!

We stayed for two nights at Royal Chiao Hsi and had the best time!

1. Check in was quick and painless, finished with a staff dressed in Japanese kimono taking us to the room, introduced the room facilities and then made a pot of tea for us! It was a hint of what to expect for the rest of the weekend.
2. Service was truly flawless at this place. At one time I was pushing my daughter in her pram and I sort of stopped and hesitated around the lobby area and immediately a staff came and asked if they could be of assistance! I loved that initiative.
3. The hotel was beautiful. The buildings had a minimal and modern zen feel to it. The grounds were well kept. Our room was the standard Western room. Plenty of space for a family of three. The spa pools outdoor were fantastic! We tried all of them! Just remember to bring a swimming cap, as it is mandatory.
4. With a two year old in tow, children facilities are very important to us. And the hotel had that covered too! An indoor playground, a play area with toys and a play kitchen, and books, plenty to keep our daughter occupied when not out in the spa pools.
5. Breakfast and dinner were included in our package, so we had the buffet breakfast, one buffet dinner and one set menu dinner. The buffets were very nice, had good spread, with a good mix of Asian and Western food. The set menu dinner was also very delicious.
Overall, it was the best place I have stayed at in Taiwan. Would love to go again!

Room Tip: Book early if going on a weekend, it gets booked out very quickly.

The best way to ascertain a hotel's standard of service is when they are fully booked. I have heard much about YiLan area from my Taiwanese friends and I managed to squeeze some time over Christmas week and booked a three night stay at Hotel Royal Chiao Hsi. I found the hotel online and booked directly with the hotel reception. Service was professional and an email confirmation followed suit on details of meals and other pre-stay arrangements.

We booked a local driver to send us from Taipei to YiLan. The journey to YiLan was smooth and pleasant. The scenery that greeted us along the way gradually transformed from the city landscape to nature, padi fields, mountain views and some agricultural land. I understand from the friendly driver that we should avoid YiLan on Taiwanese public holidays and weekends as it is a popular location for Taipei City dwellers.

The Hotel Royal Chiao Hsi is established in YiLan area a while ago hence they are strategically located at the foot of the Taipingshan range, near a flowing river and waterfall. The hotel lobby is elegantly designed: Zen style; the hostess ushered us to the check in reception. Check in was rather prompt given the fact that the hotel was fully booked. The lobby's walls are covered in beautiful Chinese artworks and calligraphy all available for purchase.

We stayed at a Japanese suite, the room is reasonably spacious with a long narrow balcony. Our balcony faces the green mountain range and we could hear birds and the gushing river in the distance. The bathroom is rather small but it has a separate shower area and a hot spring tub. In the evening, the housekeepers prepares three sets of bedding for our family. I appreciate the intricate touches like preparation of different teas and snacks for different parts of the day, the pillow menu, the yukatas (Japanese styled casual wear) the little rack for you to hang some simple clothing and the complimentary mini bar which gets replenished daily.

Breakfast comes with two choices - a buffet styled or a Japanese Chinese set meal. I prefer the latter setting. There are other amenities for an entire family to enjoy, there are a variety of outdoor hot spring, children's pool, indoor yoga, games room, spa. Hotel Royal Chiao Hsi is blessed with a good location, tastefully designed public areas, well maintained modern bedrooms, a good mix of in-house restaurants and a wonderful team of hardworking and friendly staff. There is plenty for children and adults to do without having to leave the resort.

There are no restaurants outside the resort, you can pack a small picnic and take a walk up the mountain range to the waterfall. Alternatively a short drive will take you out to JiaoSi's town area where there are nice restaurants and lovely cafes. Within the JiaoSi area, there are many activities for children to participate in: Crayon factory, Candy factory, Honey Factory. The Concierge at the hotel can assist with bookings and transportation.

I gave this resort a four star review as with all large resorts there is a need to accommodate large tourists' groups which can make the place a little too noisy sometimes. It didn't help that it was Christmas week.

But back in my room it is all blissful. I will recall fondly waking up early each morning, soaking in the hot spring tub with a cup of fragrant tea; watching little misty droplets drip down the bathroom window and the morning mist unfold across the hills outside. If time was on my side, my family and I are happy to indulge ourselves and stay an entire week at this blissful lovely resort.

Room Tip: Mountain view rooms are the quietest and most scenic.

So, we were not able to stay at the hotel. They were fully booked when we contacted them two weeks before our visit (also, it was around Jan. 1, but not exactly over New Year's Eve).

We instead did a package for the buffet lunch and private "aroma" bath house just to spend the day. The staff was super nice!

We emailed them the day before to arrange a free pick up from the train station (and weirdly, the van has Wifi). We were then able to walk up the road to the beautiful waterfall park area. It's a small two lane road, and there's no sidewalk, but it was mostly fine.

The buffet spread was huge and beautiful! But the food was not actually that great. Totally fine, just did not taste as good as it looked. It's funny to see people loading up on plates of shrimp and crab legs.

Note that you can either choose lunch and private bath house or lunch and usage of hotel public hot springs/pool area. You can't get both pool and private bath house if you're not a guest. It was a grey, drizzly day, so we did the private hot spring room, which was fun and relaxing. Make sure they turn on the heat or air conditioner to your liking when they set you up, because the remote is incomprehensible if you don't read Chinese.

I was a little sad to not have access to the pool facilities because they had a Dr. Fish pool where little fish eat dead skin off your feet, fun! I probably could have snuck a foot dip, but it didn't seem worth it. Also, I did a Dr. Fish pool later on our Taiwan trip, and it was not that amazing. A few fish quietly nibble on, like, one toe. It was not the full-on fish banquet/exfoliation I had imagined.

The staff speaks and writes in great English, in case you don't speak Mandarin.

I recommend contacting them early and making sure to book any massages, bath houses or pool time, etc, especially since their English website is really confusing.

This was my first ever visit to the Northeastern side of Taiwan and i was booked at this spa resort along with a big team of colleagues for a company event. The drive from Taipei was pleasant and upon arrival at the hotel i felt very relaxed by the de or and the efficient check-in. My room was a two-storied one, with japanese style interiors, a sitting room downstairs, a bedroom upstairs, a wardrobe area, a private spa tub, a sit- out area with a view to distant mountains and everything was tasteful and serene. The conference facility, the food, the efficiency and alacrity of the staff, all very pleasing, really. Breakfast buffet is huge and tasty. I also has a chance to use the karaoke room which was not extraordinary but not bad. Te hotel had given me a coupon to use their hotwater spiring area but i had no chance to use the coupon. My other minor grouse was all the written instructions everywhere were in Chinese. All the same the helpful attitude of staff more than compensates for that. I hope to go back here, one day with my family.

This is my first time to stay in Hotel Royal Chiao Hsi. It is a well maintained hotel and the hot spring in Chiao Hsi is excellent. The only defective is that too many guests make the space for public entertainment is kind of crowd. The "crowd" feeling compares to quite high hotel charge, the value for money is not that worthy. Because we visit here for the company year end party, I only had the breakfast buffet. The variety of food is a lot, but the flavor is quite average. I am only delighted by the automatic coffee machine with grinder, the cafe latte is REALLY delicious, just like you buy from the Starbucks.

Room Tip: They use the larger single bed mattress, so the twin bed room is suitable for family
