“A little piece of haven”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

Part of our Sri Lanka adventure tour, the cool climate here made a welcome break after the tropical heat. The hotel is clean, well presented and full of history and charm but above all the welcoming and friendly staff added that little extra to our holiday.

We my husband ,Frank and myself, spent one night in this hotels best suite,it was sheer bliss. The suite was large, even had an upstairs bedroom, the furnishings and decor were in the old Colonial style.Large ornate wooden boxes were placed either side of the huge canopied 4-poster bed ,as it was so high!dressing gowns and slippers were provided for our use,and the his and hers washhand basins were equipped with elegant toiletries,as was the large corner bath and the double shower cubicle. We had tea making facilities.a bowl of fresh fruit, lounge furniture and use of large tv,a desk and stationery. After a lovely buffet style dinner we returned to our suite to find hot water bottles had been placed in our bed as nights are cold in hill country a fire was also provided Marvellous hospitality

Room Tip: location and grounds are important for peace and quiet

We stayed at this hotel on 21st and 22nd of March this year. It was a very pleasant break from the heat of the plains and enjoyed seeing an open fire!
The evening we arrived we had a very stimulating tour above the hotel with the resident Naturalist.
We had the good fortune to see many birds including the Scimitar Babbler, Yellow Eared Bulbul, Dusky Blue Flycatcher and the Sri Lankan White Eye.
We visited the Pedro Tea Estate and had a good walk to the Lovers Leap Waterfall.

This was our second visit to St. Andrews and was very much a nostalgia trip for us, we were not disappointed. This is not the grandest hotel in Nuwara Eliya but is most certainly the most charming. The gardens must be the best kept in town and you will be impressed by the colonial style building set on the hillside. The staff are some of the most friendly and attentive that we have ever encountered in our travels. If you have the time you should book a trip to Horton Plains with the hotels resident naturalist Ishan. He great companion and very knowledgeable about the flora and forna.

Room Tip: Ground floor with door out to the lawn.

We stayed two nights at this hotel as part of an adventure tour of the island. It looks quite colonial and impressive, and it definitely has character - but it is looking very tired in the communal areas - particularly the stair wells. The rooms were OK - nothing special but quite quaint. We had the evening buffet here two nights and one lunch. I thought the food was good, there was plenty to choose from. The dining room is very dark and gloomy and definitely needs lightening up, and the boys enjoyed the snooker room! The bar is quite pokey - and there is one room covered in graffiti - which the hotel obviously think adds something, but it did nothing for me!!

The location - Nuwara Eliya is fantastic though - and the drive up - hours of hair pin bends and amazing views around every corner - is a must see in Sri Lanka.

Room Tip: Most rooms are twin I think, so ask for a double if that is your prefernce

It was like stepping back in history to a better age. A wonderful colonial style hotel, beautiful gardens, comfortable rooms, excellent service food and drink. Checking in took very little time even though we were a party of ten plus guide. We were brought a cup of delicious soup and hot towels to refresh ourselves. We were very well looked after during our stay. We only spent one night here, I would love to stay longer. We had a very early start to be driven to Colombo Airport the next morning. A very helpful reception staff member collected our cases, booked us out and provided a "braekfast box" for our journey. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel. Thank you St Andrew's staff.
