“Elegant Old Mansion Style hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2014

This hotel had a very imperial feel hotel - one would walk in it and feel they have entered the past the royalty the majesticness the old world feel, the very srilankan feel, the endless view of the lush green tea states.

The rooms was like an old royal chamber with wooden floor and lace curtains :)

The best part is the very well kept gardens of ths property do visit the gardens.

We stayed here after coming in from Kandy. The whole region has a weather so different from the rest of the country. This is a very good hotel and the British days look is well preserved. We regret spending only one night here. The indian food restaurant was excellent. Also recommend the inhouse SPA who are quite good at their skill. There are some good Tea gardens in the vicinity as well as a visit to Hakagala is worth it.

Wow. This is the most wonderful hotel. I feel like we fell into a novel of times gone by. The elaborate fixtures, extensive wood panelling and uniforms of the staff are to be complimented.

I so wish we were staying here longer.

The surrounding tea plantations provide a fascinating insight into the past and present industry of Sri Lanka.

I would be happy just investigating the various rooms and walking the grounds while admiring the views. But for those who want to go into town it is but a short walk.

The restaurants have an amazing selection of food and the staff very helpful albeit a little slow in terms of bringing baggage to rooms.

Namal the assistant food and beverage manner was a wonderful host and assisted us throughout our stay.

I would love to return and enjoy the majesty of the hotel and the countryside.

Room Tip: If you are travelling with another couple book the two bedroom suite on third floor. It is amazing.

Surrounded by a beautiful lush-green and well-maintained garden, this colonial style hotel is a good place to be when in this hill town of Nuwara Eliya.

I must narrate one little incident that strongly establishes the natural warmth and hospitable nature of the people here.

We had gone out for a long evening walk and returned straight to their restaurant for dinner. Since this restaurant had a dress code to follow and I was not thinking of going up to my room to change my half pants, we decided to go to the adjacent restaurant. But we were pleasantly surprised when the restaurant manager from the second restaurant walked us back to the main restaurant and offered us a fresh set of their traditional bottom wear that would fulfill the necessary dress code.

This rambling colonial-era hotel provides a special experience, with grand public rooms, beautiful and very well-maintained gardens and evocative decor. Our room, in what was probably the newest part of the hotel, was not very large but it was comfortable and well-equipped and was attractively decorated in an older style, with a pleasant outlook towards the golf course. Wifi reception was patchy in our room, but there was good wifi in the lounge and reception areas and the hotel also provides two computers for guests to use. The reception staff were pleasant and responsive.
The food was excellent in the extensive dinner and breakfast buffets. We also enjoyed the high tea, although the waiters were initially very slow in providing us with tea and it would have been better if the area used for the high tea had not also been the one used by cigar and other smokers. In addition to the main dining room, there are Indian and Thai restaurants.
Even for people not staying there, this hotel would be well worth visiting to see the beautiful gardens and enjoy some of the excellent food.

This was our maiden trip to the beautiful Country Srilanka. Without knowing much about the places and hotel, we opted to stay in The Grand Hotel - Nuwara Eliya. There are no words to praise about this hotel and the hospitality. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Awesome staffs, beautiful rooms and amenities. We strongly suggest to all our friends to opt for this hotel. If we happen to travel again to srilanka, for sure we will stay more days in this hotel.

Dear Guest, Thank you for reviewing us. We are so happy to learn that we were able to provide you a most enjoyable time at the Grand. We at the grand are constantly thinking of ways of adding value to the guest experience which is why we have introduced a number of dining options including the acclaimed Grand Indian and the newly opened Grand Thai, both led by expat Chefs from India and Thailand respectively. We do hope your stay in Nuwara Eliya was a good one and hope to see you again. Best wishes from all of us at the Grand. Sincerely, Resident Manager.

If you ever want to stay in a colonial hotel then The Grand Hotel is just what you are looking for. The hotel is surrounded by delightful gardens where one can sit and taken in the fresh air. Considering that the hotel is old, I was not surprised that the bathrooms were old fashioned. The electrical appliances such as TV and heaters were also old fashioned. Staff were very attentive and I was partcularly impressed by the extra care taken by the chef to prepare food for my son who suffers from multiple allergies. For those who would like to shoot pellets from an air-rifle, there is an opportunity to do so. Wifi is available only in the lobby and it would be great if arrangements are made to provide wifi in the rooms as well. All in all a pleasant experience
