We stayed here for 3 nights. We hired a driver from Colombo and the journey was very long - about 6 hours - the roads out of Colombo are terrible - bumpy and congested, and as you get further into the highlands the roads are incredibly windy. I think we averaged a speed of about 40 km/hr for the trip. We were greeted with 'welcome soup' when we arrived and told there was a problem with the room - we had inadvertently paid for 1 guest only, we could still have the room, but had to pay about an extra $USD 30 a night. I thought they took a little long to get our room organised, they seemed to have no appreciation of the long journey there - people don't want to be kept waiting after an exhausting trip.

The lobby and restaurant area of the hotel are very opulent but that's where the opulence ends. We had a 'deluxe room', and it was small, had an old TV and if you wanted a mini bar, including a fridge, you had to request one! I have never heard of this before. Bathroom was small, towels were threadbare, as were the blankets on the bed. My partner complained to the reception staff that the room was not 'deluxe' and not good value for money, they made a half hearted effort to show us other rooms, but these were equally small (or smaller) and poorly appointed. I also needed a Dr when I was there and had to ask the reception staff twice before one arrived. They first told us the Dr would come in 20 mins, 2 hours later, nothing, so I called again. The Dr explained the reception staff had not communicated clearly. All in all, very poor value for money and we were disappointed with our stay - we paid around $USD200 a night to stay here, you would expect more for your money.

The housekeeping staff are very nice but do come along very frequently - remember to put your "do not disturb" sign in place if you don't want to be constantly answering the door. The hallways are also very long and you can hear people/trolleys going past constantly.

Great hotel in Nuwara Eliya, part of its Colonial architecture.

You can see hotel's age in its rooms with average facilities, but the general feeling was stronger to me.

Beautiful garden and inside halls.
Great photographic opportunity.

Once a colonial mansion, and still with the same atmosphere
The location is good, only 7 minute walk from city center (or rather the fleece market)
Rooms are ok and very clean
Staff was helpful, and
Gardens are lovely
Restaurant is old fashion and food is very good

The property is very nice and is for people who like hotels which are colonial. It has all the facilities required for a great vacation. The rooms are large and spacious and well laid out. The hotel has a nice garden and great restaurant both for breakfast and lunch/ dinner. They also have various activities like air rifle shooting & other outdoor activities to keep the kids engaged. For those who like adventure you can take the night safari where they take you to the nearby forest to sight Panthers, Leopards, etc in a enclosed vehicle. The staff is very friendly and hospitable like any other hotel in Sri Lanka and they ensure that your stay is comfortable and you are well looked after. Being a very old hotel you will need to walk a lot from the lift to your rooms as each floor would have approximately 50 rooms with only one lift. The hotel has a spa but the quality of service was average and was not upto expected standard. The hotel is centrally located which helps you in exploring the nearby areas with ease. I had booked this hotel as this is the only hotel which has a Indian restaurant attached which serves quality Indian food.

Room Tip: Please choose rooms closer to the elevators if you have difficulty in walking or have a disabled per...

Travelled in Sri Lanka in July/August 2012. After the heat of the coastal areas the change to a cooler climate in the highlands was remarkable. Nuwara Eliya was a very nice town known as 'Little England' - apparenlty becuase the British used it as an escape from the more humid coastal areas. it does have a British feel to it and the Grand Hotel was stunning. The gardens are a delight to stroll in, the restaurants serve nice food and the accommodation was 'old wordly' but an absolute delight. The staff are friendly and helpful. Wish I could have stayed longer than the two nights I had in Nuwara Eliya.
Highly recommend staying there. Wonderful experience.

Room Tip: Make a point of visiting the downstairs old English tavern/bar.

We were told by our guide that this hotel was once the colonial mansion. It certainly looked the part from the outside. It has an elegant entrance hall and wonderful gardens. The staff were helpful and friendly. The rooms were very small and quite shabby, with limited facilities.
The restaurant was lovely and the food excellent.
Unfortunately it is off the beaten track so very little to do or see outside the hotel.

Room Tip: Very noisy at the front of the hotel, but these have the best view!
