“Tea will never taste the same again...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2014

Having stayed at the Tea Factory regularly when living in the Maldives, six years after our last visit we decided to return and relive the wonderful stays from the past...we were not disappointed.

The setting is wonderful and the way in which the conversion of an old, working Tea Factory into a top end hotel was handled is testament to the design team. So many of the original features have been sympathetically retained and work alongside the newer elements well.

The rooms, whilst not huge, are a reasonable size and bearing in mind the layout of the original building, make the most of the available space. Besides, just look out of the window...you don't need space in the room when there is such an amazing view to concentrate on.

The restaurant is good and provides a reasonable menu in comparison to other hotels in Sri Lanka. For an interesting dining experience, take the 'train'. Well, a railway carriage parked outside the hotel. This is a multi course dinner served by a 'guard' who goes out of his way to make the experience feel real. It's actually quite funny to listen to the background noise of a carriage trundling along rickety tracks. And the food is delicious which always helps.

But best of all, the element that makes the Tea Factory stand out more than any other, the staff. Irrespective of who you encounter, no matter what their role, everyone is friendly and helpful and make you feel genuinely appreciated as a guest. We even watched as one guest tried to encourage an argument with a member of the front desk staff, that member of staff remained firm in their position but despite continued rudeness from the guest, always stayed polite and courteous. I couldn't have, that guest would have been told where he could go in no uncertain terms if it had been me...so well done to everyone of the staff who made our return so special.

We stayed here for one night on our last night of our weeks tour, the hotel was an old tea factory and they have kept the theme throughout and also some of the machinery. They have lots of posters everywhere giving you a history of the factory. Its set on a hill and is up a 4km dirt track, but worth the bumpy ride!

As it was our honeymoon we were upgraded to a suite which was lovely. We also had a set menu dinner and the food was really good.

Stayed here for 1 night the night before my birthday. I only have positive things to say about this place. From start to finish the experience was amazing and it was mainly thanks to the wonderful staff. We arrived in the afternoon after a fairly long and windy drive up through the hill country. Had a lovely traditional welcome at check in (I won't spoil the surprise!) and were promptly shown to our room. My boyfriend asked if it was possible to do anything as it was my birthday, we were upgraded to a beautiful room on the top floor of the hotel with views overlooking the plantation. After having tea on the veranda (extremely reasonably priced given the quality) we dined in the train carriage with the host Pushpa in the evening. Both food and service were impeccable. Pricey compared to elsewhere in Sri Lanka but worth it for a treat. We went to bed very full! The room itself was well equipped and I had a very comfortable nights sleep. Breakfast in the morning was the standard fare but with an excellent level if service. The waiters even brought out a birthday cake and played Happy Birthday which was very lovely. Overall I would highly recommend this hotel. The staff are a great asset here and compliment a beautiful old building. Its perfect for 1 or 2 nights but us pricey. Thank you for a very special start to my birthday.

We spent one night here and would have liked to make it more. Very attentive service and a fabulous view from the room. The building, with its artefacts from the factory's heyday, has huge charm and character. The owners claim to have done a lot for the local village and to favour local employees, which offset my slight unease at the rather colonial feel - if you want 'authentic' rustic Sri Lanka, this is not the place to be. The a la carte food was very good and the buffet appeared to be outstanding. The approach is quite an adventure. The old factory is perched on top of a hill and so commands stunning views - but that does mean it's quite a long way off the beaten track along a narrow, twisting road. A visit here is an experience in itself and well worth the effort, but there may be better options as a base if you intend to head out a lot and explore the area (although the hotel does offer a range of activities). One minor complaint - on checkout my bill was converted from the local currency to a payment in sterling without consultation. Rather cheeky as the tourist tends to lose out on the exchange rate. As it's Sri Lanka, that won't amount to a great cost but it's poor practice in principle.

Dear Guest

Thank you very much for your review.

It is with great pleasure that we read your review on Trip Advisor and thank you for all the lovely compliments extended. The hotel carries out lot of CSR activities and majority of the staff is from the local village. Please accept our sincere apologies if you were inconvenienced in any way during the check-out. We are compelled to follow the laid down procedures of the company since all bill settlements should be carried in local currency.

Thank you very much again for your review. We invite you to visit us once again.

My fav part in my whole trip was Nuwara and Specially the tea factory. The staff greeted us with traditional Srilankan drink (tea) in a special ritual that was very joyful. The stay was a new experience with old fashioned elevator and rooms. The restaurant was amazing (but there was a dress code for males should wear sarrongs or sport-chic pants and for females skirts or dresses only). The only negative thing is that it was very cold in nuwara and the heating at the hotel was not enough

Room Tip: Room not near the elevator cause it is noisy, and ask to have ur room heat on before you go cause it...

Only stayed 1 night here during a very packed trip to Sri Lanka, but it was enough to make an impression. Of all the hotels I stayed at during the trip, this was my hands-down favorite. You'll be welcomed upon arrival with tea (naturally), and the entire property is like a museum, inside and out. It's like being transported in time to an era when hotels treated their guests like royalty. Also, the best dinner buffet I've never had at a hotel. Come prepared as there is a dress code, and it is cold up there, pack warm clothes!

Next time I would love to stay here for a few days to really soak in the beauty of the property, especially since it takes such a long drive to get there. It's worth the trek.

Honestly, all the photos posted to this review do not do the place justice. Guess you just have see it to believe it, you won't be disappointed.

Don't be fooled by the look of this hotel from the outside - it is still exactly as it was - an old tea factory - inside it amazing they haye kept as much as they can from the original factory, but made it it to a wonderful hotel. Our room was on top floor with great views. Only small issue is the shower is in the bath and its a big step in and out - which was a concern as I was afraid of slipping.
Don't miss the dinner on the train - this is an amazing experience - we had a great night - the host really is fantastic - he was hilarious. the food was brilliant - in fact we had so much we could not fit in the cheese and biscuits at the end!!!
