“A pleasant surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

We arrived at The Firs after a mix up had been made with a booking at another hotel. We were not sure what to expect as it was last minute and we knew nothing about this place. The moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome and the manager explained how this bungalow/guest house was once the summer home of the prime minister of Sri Lanka and still owned by his grandaughter. There were many interesting photos of the family on the walls.
We were the only guests that night (4 of us) and the rooms were extremely comfortable (apart from lack of hot water in the evening but OK by the next day). There was a cosy fire in the room which you needed high up in Nuwara Eliya!
The evening meal was quirky to say the least! My husband and son were seated facing the kitchen door and they kept seeing the chef peering out to see if we were enjoying his food! We felt a little pressure as we were the only people there - but the food was good and the service impeccable.
Tea was served in our rooms in the morning and breakfast was served in the summer house outside as the weather was good. The pancakes with local honey were delicious.
All in all I would recommend this guest house as it really shows a side of colonial life gone by and you are treated like royalty.

The Firs is more of a guesthouse than a hotel, with only about 4-5 rooms. It is certainly a unique place to stay! The bungalow belonged to the first post-independence Prime Minister of Sri Lanka (if I understood correctly) and opened as a hotel in December 2012. We were the only guests that night and had an excess of staff to look after us, which felt a bit odd! However, everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. Free wifi is available and worked well.

We were given delicious spiced tea on arrival. The rooms are large and very comfortable, with old-fashioned furniture, including a four-poster bed. Dinner (served at your preferred time!) was a set menu of European-style food, which was fine, although we would have much preferred some local dishes! We had a 5am start the next day to get to Horton Plains, and 3 members of staff got up to see us off!

Only negative was that our sleep was disturbed by a very friendly little dog that patrolled around outside the bungalow, barking constantly, for at least an hour! A general tip: bring a sweater and trousers as it gets quite chilly here at night.

Stayed at this hotel was awful, hotel was very new but poor service ,the food also not good ultimately we have to go the city for having dinner ,it’s too far from the city ,difficult to walk ,sometimes the staff cannot understand the English ,it also problem for us, bad smell of carport make us to leave this place, nothing special like photos you seen on trip advisor ,if you not going this place you can keep your time and money

Room Tip: New rooms Not good Carport floor

One of the nicest places I stayed in the 1 week in Sri Lanka!

Everything you need or want is here.

The room was kept warm by the 'electrical' fireplace. Very posh fittings. Very clean and well maintained. There's even a jacuzzi in the bathroom!

Service is top-notch. Dinner and breakfast were great and will be ready at your requested time!

Its location is also near the sites that you want to visit.
