“A pleasant family”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2014

We stayed there 3 nights. Staff is very kind, smilling all the time. Food is ok,the breakfast omelette delicious(for a european taste). They helped us find and organize the daily trips. Older son is very entrepreneurial, keen and up to his job. The only less exciting thing is the room (standard double). There is no view and humidity gets to your bones,so you can easily catch a cold. However,to sum up, very good service and atmosphere. International but not too much.

After I arrived Nuwara Eliya, a van drive recommended this guesthouse to me. I checked review comments, sounds not bad. Then I followed the driver to this guesthouse. The room and the owner are quite good. The room with view is quite warm. No heater needed.

The owner always prepared welcome tea for me. They even prepared high tea to us for Christmas day.

The only inconvenience part is the location. It is a bit far from city. You need take TukTuk to here for 100-150Rs.

But I really like this place.

I booked up with Allen due to the nice reviews i read in tripadvisor. This is indeed a nice place to stay with a good house on the side of a steep mountain with a fantastic view. The rooms are nice and clean with hot water which is really necessary in the cold. Allen and his family live downstairs and the guest rooms are upstairs. There are two rooms with a good view and try to make sure that you get these rooms. Allen was nice and even dropped us to the city a couple of times because his wife was not there to cook for us.

However the drawbacks to this place is the dealings which they do with transport and sightseeing. The people they are associated with are not very nice and even will act nasty when you are not interested in their exorbitant rates. This happened twice with us and was not a co incidence. Luckily since we were very clear with our dealings we did not get taken for a ride.

Preferably book up all your transfers and taxis from the main city center to make sure that you get a good rate and do not get exorbitant rates through the hotel.

Food was very nice but i found it very expensive when compared to other home stays as well as when compared to the food you get in the city.

All in all a nice house and Allen is a good guy ... but the dealings and negotiations that you have to do in order not to get cheated rather spoil the mood of your stay.

Room Tip: Only two rooms on the upstairs floor have a beautiful view!!! Make sure that you get these rooms.

In august we stayed one night in Nuwara Eliya, at Chez Allen. The place is a little outside Nuwara, a little up the hill, with a very steep last few metres. But tuktuk drivers all know it. From the top of their roof you have a great view over the area (if it isn’t too cloudy).
Allen and his wife (and family) have some very nice, clean rooms to stay. During night time it can get very cold but there are extra blankets present (keep your socks on also helps). In case you like to have some lunch or dinner, Allen’s wife can prepare a delicious meal for you.
In the morning we wanted to visit Horton Plains for a 9 km walk so Allen arranged a driver for us to take us there; we shared with a nice Indian couplet hat we met there. Very early in the morning (5:30 AM) we left with a great lunch package in foam boxes to keep it warm.

Tip: take warm clothing with you or buy it cheap in Nuwara Eliya at the small market where they have a lot of jackets etc.

Allen & wife: thanks for your warm, hearthly welcome and stay at your place!

My wife & I stayed here for two nights during our 4 week travels through Sri Lanka and this guesthouse was probably our favourite.
The family who run this are such genuinely lovely people. Allen is a very friendly chap and helped book our tour to worlds end. The lady - I think her name is Manika - was so lovely. The food she made was excellent both for dinner and breakfast. On our early morning trip to worlds end she provided a delicious packed lunch for us both too. Even the son was great - he sat up one evening with us and taught us how to play the local Sri Lankan game potting little discs with your fingers (think pool but no cues and discs not balls).
We were initially concerned that the location was a little far out from the centre but it turns out it is only a 10 minute walk and the views from up high over Newara Eliya and the mountains are stunning.
Such a great place and lovely people who run it. We felt sad to leave. Thank you Chez Allen.

Chez Allen is a comfortable and homely little place, ideal for backpackers or young travelers. The hostel is a bit difficult to find (you might need to call the owner for directions) and a bit hard to access with a larger vehicle (steep and narrow road at the last hundred metres). Our group was travelling in a van and the driver had some difficulties getting there. We felt very comfortable in this cosy place, the owner and his family look after the house very well. The rooms were basic (as you would expect it in a guesthouse) but very spacious, clean and the beds had nice warm blankets. Also, the bathrooms were very well maintained and had warm water (which you really appreciate after a cold and rainy day up there!). The hostel is located a bit far from the city centre of Nuwara Eliya, so it’s not very practicable to walk to the city on foot from there. Allen did not have any driver’s quarters but he was so kind as to offer our driver a room to stay in without extra charge. The heart of the guest house is a large living room which offers some couches, a TV and even a computer with internet access. Unfortunately, we only stayed here for one night since we had to move on early morning the next day to go to Horton Plains. Allen provided us with a quick cup of tea and some lunch packets for the day. All in all, we had a short but wonderful time and would definitely stay here again.

A comfortable bed, a hot meal and a nice view at a good price, but the overall experience was brought down a lot by the half hearted maintenance of the place. The toilet was leaking (causing a constant pool of cold water covering the bathroom), floors was broken, windows didn't close, towel hooks lay rusted on the floors and we found a dead frog squeezed in one the windows.
