“Lovely stay, super clean, great views, good food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2013

I really don't understand the bad reviews of this hotel. We had a totally diferent experience.

It was low season so we had a really good price for a huge room, with satellite TV, hot shower, a balcony with awsome views of all the valley, free fast and good working Wi-FI and breakfast.

The room was super clean, bed was new and very comfortable. It is a family run place and the manager was very very friendly and helpfull. We asked for coconut roti and coconut sambol for breakfast (which we love), it was really good so they even offered to show us how to cook it next morning. We had a free cooking class with uncle (the chef) and his sons. It was great!

We were alone in the hotel except for one nIght when a group of sri lankan and indian young guys came and in fact, made a lot of noise, but they were out next morning so we could enjoy our calm, relaxed an comfortable stay.

We had such a good time we ended staying 4 instead of 2 nights originaly planed. So maybe they corrected their past mistakes, because I couldn't find very bad points on this hotel.

I would totally recommend, and suggest to give them a chance!

Room Tip: We had the room on the first floor, with a balcony and views. We loved it for the price.

I traveled to Sri Lanka solo in May 2013. During this trip I stayed one night in Nuwaraeliya. This is a hill station & this hotel gives perfect view of the mountains & mist overlooking it. You can almost see the whole town from the balcony provided if there is no mist :-)
I would definitely recommend this hotel whoever wants a old era or I would say British era stay in a nice cozy quite place. Staff is helpful & always ready to service whatever is required.

Room Tip: Take a room where balcony or window opens to the view of the mountain!!!

Nice quaint hotel that offers amazing views of Nuwara Eliya. The manager Mr. Samahita looks after the guests very well and was kind enough pack us breakfast for an early morning trip to Hortons plains. The rooms are comfortable and clean and have an old world charm around them. The bed was comfortable for 2 medium size adults and a 6 year old. The food they prepared for us was very good and tasty. We only tasted the local fare for dinner for 2 nights that we stayed here. The service is very attentive and good. Pre ordering helps save time during service.

Note: The hotel is located slightly away from the town and we had a car which made is easy to access it. The hotel is old which means don't expect shiny interiors and accessories in the rooms and toilets. The room are very clean including the toilets and have accessories that work. Ignore the stains and non existent shower curtains and you will have a memorable trip. This was part of a package so cannot determine if it was value for money but we were there in the peak season, so am assuming it is.

Room Tip: Get a room with a view.

Many other guesthouses/hotels in the city were booked up, so we trudged our way up to Rising Lion. Big mistake.

They at first tried to charge us 6000 Rs/night, but we were able to negotiate down to 3500 Rs.

The carpet consisted of disgusting, stained, and random pieces layed over each other in the room. The whole room smelled of damp, and there was a strange odor emanating from the sink drain (chemical smell). It was very cold at night, but at least they provided one plush blanket that helped a tiny bit.

Not much in the way of clean or quality accommodation in Nuwara Eliya. The town itself wasn't worth a stop really, as well.

Room Tip: a view might make it somewhat palatable

This was my worst hotel experience. We were a party of 5 and we had booked and paid for two rooms for a night. But during our time in Sri Lanka our plans got changed so we had to move our booking by a night. 3 days before I contacted the hotel by phone and asked if it would be ok to change the booking and if we would incur a charge. They said it wouldn’t be a problem. The day before we arrived I called the manager to confirm the booking - just to be sure. Again we were told everything would be alright.
When we arrived at the hotel they said they didn’t have a room for us and asked why we didn’t come last night. This obviously was a shock to us and we made sure we were at the right place and used the right number - which we had. The manager was very rude and aggressive with us (we had a 2 year old with us) and was not willing to provide us with any assistance. To make a long story short we weren’t refunded our money, we couldn’t get a room at the hotel even though there were rooms available, we were offered no help to find a new room and to round there experience off we were made out to be the ones who had done something wrong.
So we have no idea how the rooms or food was because we didn’t make it passed the front door.

* We were a group of 5 (2 couples and 1 infant), touring Sri Lanka in Dec/Jan 2012/3. We'd booked this hotel online, via an agent, and had paid upfront. We were visiting Nuwara Eliya around the middle of our trip.
* We called the hotel whilst in Sri Lanka, to move the date of our stay back by one day. The hotel staff member confirmed that our booking had been changed.
* As English wasn't the first language of the staff member we spoke to, we called again the next day, to check the change had been made. The staff member we spoke on on this occasion gave positive confirmation that our booking was indeed for the (correct) later date.
* On arriving at the Rising Lion, we were told by the manager that the booking had not been moved, that we should have been there the night before, and that they had no rooms for us.
* The manager at first denied that we'd called and moved the booking, then admitted that we may have spoken to his staff, but that he was not responsible for what they had told us.
* The manager also later admitted that he did actually have vacant rooms that evening (ie his earlier comments about no rooms being available was a lie), but that if we wanted them we would have to pay him a second time.

What is perhaps most disappointing is this: whilst booking errors do occur from time to time, the manager showed no interest in helping us find alternate accommodation, or finding a compromise solution acceptable to both parties. In fact he became very aggressive, almost as soon as we arrived.

My advice to others? There are plenty of cool looking places in Nuwara Eliya, and many of them are professionally run. This is not one of them.

Room Tip: Stay away.

The room was a little older and slightly worse for wear, not good value given the price.
The bathroom however was newly renovated with a great shower - hot water and good pressure!
The staff were helpful-ish and the restaurant decent enough, although the food was overpriced.
Would definitely check out other places in the area before staying here again.
