We stayed at the Alam Ubud in Kunti 1 & 2 for my birthday treat in May. We loved the resort as it was very quiet and relaxed and in the most beautiful setting. We especially loved Villa Kunti 2 as it had beautiful views from the private pool. Check-in and out were very good the staff were very helpful and friendly. The only small gripe was the lack of choice on the lunch menu in the restaurant and some of the waiting staff had poor English however this is common anyway in Bali. The staff went out of their way to make my actual birthday very special with rose petals on the bed, special birthday breakfast including complimentary cake in one of the gazebos, flowers and cute birthday card and they also gave us a complimentary 3 course dinner with a bottle of wine which was very unexpected and appreciated all again which was served in a private gazebo setting for 2 by candlelight. We would definitely highly recommend this resort for couples looking for a romantic relaxing holiday. Not really suited to families or children. If you want interaction with other people then this probably isn't the place for you we stayed a week and barely saw any other guests as its quite a small resort but this is the style we prefer so for us it was heaven we even had the main pool to ourselves a few times which was great. We would definitely love to go back - thanks Alam Ubud for making my birthday so special :)

Room Tip: Kunti 2 for its beautiful views and private pool/courtyard

The villa was well appointed, although the bathroom is already very run down and all the cushions have stains. We had Kunti 2 which is the higher one of the two Kuntis so we had good sun at our private pool. We didn't mind the stairs as it was the only form of excercise. Having a pick up earlier or later in Ubud only costs 10 USD. Not necessarily more expensive than a normal taxi as they always try to rip you off. I wouldn't go through the hassle of finding your own transport. Pick up from and bringing to the airport was inclusive as with a massage for two. Breakfast is certainly as bad as everyone writes with hardly any creativity or choice, but the rest of the food is excellent which can be taken in one of the Gazebos middle in the Jungle which is an unforgettable experience. Cleanliness is a big issue as Houskeeping doesn't do a thorough job and once we had to ask them to clean again. But all in all the villa served it's purpose and we left thoroughly relaxed and had completely forgotten about work.

Situated in the uninterrupted hidden forest, heavenly villas Alam Ubud accorded us the best accommodation in Bali.

We were gentry drawn into bliss as Pushpa welcomed us with aromatic frangipani leis and the staff treated us with foot bath of holy spring and fresh ginger lemonade.

All the aesthetics are impressive. Beautifully arranged garden landscape, pavilions, furnishing and antiquities all in tune with the sound of nature and natural aroma from their lovely gardens.

We relaxed and unwind at lovely Villa Bima7 embraced by the sound of the forest and the river wind. Without going outside the property, it would be delightful with just staying at the comfortable clean large room with high sealing, lying down on a day bed at private balcony and relaxing at the swimming pool by the depth of valley.

They provided us an exclusive cooking class with full course dinner menu. We did not try, but they also provide dance lesson, gamelan, painting and carving lesson that would be fun.

All the staff treated us generously and attentively arranging a cycling tour and changes of our plans promptly. Thank you for your warm hospitality and making our holiday extra special!

In many ways Alam Ubud exceeds 5 star experiences.

I had to wonder if the other reviewers stayed at a different hotel when reading all the glowing reviews.

To start with, it seems that the original villa I booked was not available. I was not informed of this in advance, which would have been nice to know as it seemed to be out of service due to maintenance issues, not overbooking.

Unfortunately, they could not accommodate us in any villa for the first night other than the lowest category (we had booked a much higher category) but they did offer a free massage and dinner as well as upgrade for the last two nights to the highest category. That seemed fair, but it was still disappointing as it was our honeymoon.

For the first night we were in Villa Bima 3. If you get this villa, I recommend changing. As we were only in it for one night we didn't kick up a fuss but it had a horrible smell in it. Like mould and rot coming from the bathroom. It was quite unpleasant and the overpowering frangrance they used to disguise it didn't quite work!

These aren't really villas either with a private garden area etc - more like accommodation units. The view from Bima 3 was just into the trees with a glimpse of the river.

The location of the hotel is not good if you want to be in the thick of things, but it was still lovely being near rice fields, traditional villages and having an amazing view out onto the valley.

Breakfast was average, but so were most breakfasts we had in Bali. Food and drinks were way overpriced at this hotel, well over double other places.

Free shuttle doesn't go into Ubud too often, so make sure you look up the times when you arrive. Shuttle driver will try to sell you tours unfortunately.

There are free bikes to ride around the local area - check the brakes first! It's quite hilly too so you want to be quite fit. Ask the hotel staff about where you can cycle as we got told off by a local villager for going to his village.

After the first night, we got upgraded to Villa Kunti. This was really no different to Bima except it had a pool and spa downstairs. No difference size wise but it had no smell thank goodness. Unfortunately, the pool and spa are not private. I was thinking of having a spa bath until I realised that the stairs going down by the villa lead down to the river and anyone can use them.

Staff were friendly, but English was quite poor to the point where we could not understand what one of the receptionists was trying to tell us. Obviously we are in a foreign country, but it got quite difficult the day we were upgraded and came back from Ubud and he didn't seem to know who we were or where we staying, no one could find the room key etc.

On that point, security seems quite poor as we were offered another villas room key that night, and we saw passport and credit card details copied just sitting on the front desk for everyone to see.

Rate was quite expensive for the quality of room and service we received - I would not recommend this hotel unfortunately. If they spent some time training their staff and getting rid of the smell issue and making the 'villas' private, then I would reconsider.

Room Tip: Not Bima 3.

A short taxi ride from the chaos of Ubud. I had my doubts when our taxi driver turned off the main road into what seemed like an uninhabited forest. But we were greeted with a foot bath with flowers upon arrival accompanied by gentle gamelan music (no pounding techno-chillout).

Chalets clean, bright and spacious, with large balconies and comfortable furniture to sit out at night with just the sound of the river below (no motorbikes rushing past here). Rooms made up every morning. Front desk staff very helpful and efficient in organizing tours and classes.

Restaurant presided over by chef, Dewa, with his twenty years of experience in Balinese cooking. And you could tell. Every meal was beautifully prepared with local ingredients. He gives a great cooking class too. Excellent breakfasts. All at a reasonable prices compared to some of the chain hotels and backpacker places in town. Also included free massage in lovely spa area deep in the forest. We couldn’t have been happier with this place. We were there for four nights. Could have easily stayed longer.

This hotel sells itself quite highly, but really, while not having a problem there, I feel a little let down. This is an old hotel [1980], that has changed hands & has been tarted up a little. The rooms, while comfortable, still have that old, musty smell. The property is at least 5kms out of town, & there are only three shuttles per day. So if your plan is to get away & stay at the hotel, then fine. But getting to & from Ubud can be a problem as a lot of taxi drivers aren`t sure of where it is. There are a lot of steps as the hotel is built on a hillside. Can be a problem if you have any health issues as they are quite steep. The charges, both for the food & spa are, I think, unreasonably high. I`m not trying to be critical, simply factual. We`ve stayed at the Komenika at the Bisma for $220, so at $180, I think this place is a little overpriced. Again, only my opinion. The staff, like most places in Bali, were fantastic ! Helpful, always happy & polite.
So happy with our time there, but would probably look elsewhwere next trip.
