“Perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. Beautiful, views for ever.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2010

We stayed for 3 nights at Sarinbuana and were impressed with everything. There are only a few bungalows so it is very private and quiet. The 180 degree view from our bungalow was right down to the sea, via lush rain forest. The groundsand room were perfectly kept. The temperature was so much more pleasant than on the coast. The food was great. We felt healthier for it as it was so fresh. A lovely series of natural pools and waterfall. Great massage and great value. Would highly recommend it to others.

I made a last minute change to my Bali trip to stay at Sarinbuana Lodge. It was the highlight of my 2 week Bali holiday. The Tree house was fabulous - loved the views! The other guests were great company, the food was sensational (loved the fried banana and coffee ice cream), staff were genuinely friendly and helpful, and Linda and Norm were welcoming.

I really loved the philosophy that Norm and Linda work from - strong environmental focus and building community capacity - two things that Bali generally doesn't do very well.

I'm looking forward to coming back to stay at Sarinbuana lodge.

Fantastic combination of hospitality, social and environmental responsibility! Linda and Norm, the owners, are environmentalist and organic farmers who created a unique and magic place in the cool and lush mountains of Bali. Their social involvement in the Sarinbuana village community is palpable and we were invited to a temple ceremony at the village which was just great. The food is amazing and organic grown only. The waste water is threatened ecologically (waste water gardens), they support reforestation programs and help educating people in how to sustainably use the land... He is a experienced Permaculture teacher, consultant for social and environmental projects in Indonesia, etc. So be sure your money goes to the right place! We really recommend this place.

My huband and I stayed here for 4 nights in late Feb. 2010. The Eco Lodge was leg 2 of our first R&R from Kabul (leg 1 was Singapore). We were looking for somewhere that was the exact opposite of Afghanistan, and the Eco Lodge was the perfect choice. Lush, green, peaceful, with lots of good, healthy food and room to explore. We stayed in the Rumah Magiah suite, which was lovely. We spent many hours sitting on our private verandah, reading and enjoying the view. My husband took a cooking class; I got lots of massages. We went hiking and swimming and bike riding down to the beach. I really enjoyed observing a small slice of rural Bali life.

Although the Lodge was perfect for us, it won't be for everyone. First, there are LOTS of steps. Second, there are LOTS of bugs, frogs, and other creepy crawlies that go peep in the night. We're avid campers, so none of this bothered us. But if you're looking for a luxurious resort with lots of pampering, or a bustling hotspot with lots of nightlife, this is not the place for you.

I truly loved our visit to the Lodge, and wasn't ready to leave after our four days were up. I think I could have skipped Ubud and just spent our entire 10 days in Bali at the Eco Lodge. I would highly recommend the Lodge to anyone looking to unwind, unplug, and get away from it all.

We arrived a few days after Valentines day and I had emailed ahead to ask for some flowers in our room. They very kindly exceeded my expectations and lined the stairs to our Jungle Bungalow with flowers and decorated the bedroom with traditional flower designs. Our stay was complemented with the best Indonesian food we have ever had and home made ice-cream which was also the best we ever had. We had massages every day which were also fantastic. On the last day we enjoyed the garden tour which was a real eye opener on local produce and where our meals from previous days had come from. Unfortunately we weren't able to climb the big mountain because of the weather which in mid Feb was rainy in the afternoons. Although they have a number of other hikes and activities you can do instead, one of which was reasonably taxing.

We've travelled to Bali three times over the past 13 years, have spent a total of 6 weeks on the island, stayed in The Four Seasons Sayan as well as a locally owned Balinese accommodations. With that background, I would state unequivocally that Sarinbuana EcoLodge is the best place we've seen on the island for a quiet authentic Balinese retreat. The food is some of the best on the island, outshining much flashier, bigger branded hotels. Given the remote nature of the lodge you pretty much plan to eat most of your meals there, but that is not a problem given the quality of the food and the gracious well trained staff serving you. The rooms are a breezy indoor-outdoor Balinese living style, tastefully and environmentally appointed. The dining/lounge area is a cozy inviting space with fast free wifi which is truly amazing once you see where the lodge is located. There is no pool, but down an adventurous hillside path you discover a Robinson Crusoe jungle stream with three bathing pools sequentially separated by small waterfalls. It truly brings out the youthful explorer in you to climb up and into the next swimming hole. The water is clear, and delightfully refreshing in the warm and humid afternoons. Activities at the lodge are varied and I would refer you to the website for all of the options available. Suffice it to say all of the activities are hosted or performed by the neighbors in the area giving you the opportunity to hike, cook, dance, learn about the forest, etc with true locals. The lodge is a decades-in-the-making endeavor that not only entertains and educates visitors to Bali, it is an economic engine, educational center (teaching sustainable farming, environmentalism) and charitable organization for the village. The lodge (through it's guests) has programs to donate trees for planting, deliver school books to the local school (we brought a couple and left them) as well as building new school buildings and helping with after school activities such as teaching martial arts. When making our reservation, the Lodge recommended that they send its driver to us given the difficulty in finding and getting to the Lodge. At first I thought this was a way for them to boost their income or support their driver. We went along with it and ultimately were very glad we did. Their driver, Made, was outstanding, safe and their charge for the driver was inexpensive. It is truly very hard to find the Lodge. When people in Bali (including a couple of other hotel drivers) asked where we were going and I named Sarinbuana, not one Balinese person knew where it was. So, go with their driver. I would suggest staying at least three nights given the time you invest getting there (two hours from Ubud or from Denpassar), the number of things you can choose to do, and the tremendous food, you will want to sample all of the dishes, homemade desserts/ice creams, and you need a number of meals in order to accomplish that. With all of the fun, adventure and relaxation we enjoyed, Sarinbuana is not for everyone. There are beautiful sunsets and quiet evenings listening to wildlife, but there is no wild nightlife. This is mountain, jungle living, not the beach. But for those visitors who are interested in seeing how the Balinese live, work and enjoy life, while learning, relaxing and giving something back in return, just by taking a vacation, then this is certainly one stop you should consider making when you visit Bali.

We stayed here for two nights, coming from Ubud and before going to Sanur. This place is right away from any noise and mayhem of the tourist trail and is so peaceful and relaxed as a result. This is place where you find the real Bali and see village life alongside you.

The place itself is beautiful, set near Mount Batukaru with amazing views both of this and down to the coast. We stayed in Rumah Manis which had a lovely big outside area which I think had the best views out to sea across jungle. The room was clean and the bathroom was absolutely wonderful.

My husband and I are both terrified of spiders, but apart from the (admittedly massive) one by the path to room who we named Steve, there were none to be seen. This was a big relief. Apart from this, there is plenty of nature to keep you interested. One night we were reading on the veranda when lots of bats were swooping round out heads. Wonderful. There is a real sense here of being at one with nature and living alongside it. We went to the water hole which is a lovely addition and enables you to cool off in the afternoon.

The food is delicious, I think this was some of the best food we ate on our trip. Everything is so fresh and you feel really healthy after a few days of eating here. Most things are grown and harvested on the grounds. We did a tour of the gardens here which was really interesting. We also did the rice paddy walk which was excellent, as we saw some amazing views and ate some unusual fruit along the way. We wished we had more time to do other trips as they all sounded excellent, and the massages looked great too.

We didn't meet Norm and Linda as they were away while we were there, but all staff were very friendly and helpful. There is obviously a sense of community here and in the surrounding villages.

This is not a place for a party, and that's not what we came for. We wanted somewhere to relax, see the real Bali and some outstanding natural beauty. This place ticks all the boxes.
