“Awesome surf retreat.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

Was going to stay here for one day but extended to three. Setting is awesome, waves were good but it can get messy with the hard currents on the big days. Pool is great for children. Food is adequate. Staff is friendly, and room rates are a little overpriced for that area of Bali. The hot water works unpleasantly. Still, I will definitely stay there again if presented with the opportunity. I gave it five stars only because the location, setting, and atmosphere can't be beat.

We stayed at the Pondok Pitaya for four nights as part of our journey around most of the island. We had booked the Joglo Room and it provided a spacious and relaxing natural retreat for my husband and myself and another couple we were travelling with. The Joglo has hot water (albeit temperamental at times), fan-cooled rooms, a beautiful Balinese interior, spare day beds and an amazing ocean-front view. It is very open and not at all sound proof, so you would need to stay there with family or very close friends. The Pondok Pitaya restaurant was generally good value as were the others doted along the main entry. The Garden Cafe was a nice place to eat but be prepared for long waits at dinner time. Not that this bothered us, as once it gets dark in Pondok Pitaya, there isn't an awful lot to do. But that is part of the appeal of Balian; it is quiet, basic and secluded, free from the hustle and bustle of other parts of Bali. During the day the men enjoyed the close proximity of the surf and my friend and I read, swum in the lovely pool and explored the hill and beyond. I would recommend Pondok Pitaya to anyone who isn't looking for high rise resort accomodation and loves the surf. It is a beautiful and unspoilt part of Bali.

We had booked to stay here 2 nights to go surfing but left early due to inclement weather. Due to a mix up with our original booking, we ended up staying in the River House. Downstairs was a small kitchen, bathroom and lovely alfresco area. Middle level had 4 single beds and toilet and there was a loft up top with a mattress. It was pretty much open to the elements.
There were alot of mosquito's being so close to the river and only one mosqito net for the 5 beds. The idea for the house was good with a great view to the ocean from the sleeping area, however, to lug suitcases up a ladder to the bedroom area was impractical, so we left them down in the kitchen . We had luch here one day which was nice and very reasonably priced.
It certainly has the best location in Balian, but it was a tad expensive, seeing there were no mod cons and only cold water showers.

I spend one night and it was hard to sleep because of the mosquitoes!
A mosquitoe net would have been very useful, the mosquitoe electric device was unfortunately not enough, thank you.
Otherwise, it's a great location specially for surfers.

This is just a review of the restaurant at Pondok Pitaya, as we have a home in the area and no need for accommodation. We are expats who built our home off Balian Beach about 16 years ago; at that time, other than the nearby bus stop Soka Indah (which has great Nasi Goreng fyi), there were only a few restaurants (one of which is close by to Pondok Pitaya--Gaja Minah; fabulous French/Indonesian food and good wine choices).

Today the area is becoming well known for its surfing and several B&B's have sprung up,along with accompanying restaurants to our delight. There are several little surfer restaurants on this beach now and by far, our favorite two are Pondok Pitaya and Pondok Pisces. Both of these restaurants are usually packed (during high season you might even want to call to make a reservation, although if you are not in a hurry, you can hang out at the beach until there is an available table).

We love going to Pondok Pitaya to eat, no matter breakfast, lunch or dinner. To start with, the restaurant is right off the beach and the view is stunning. You can get acceptable wi-fi (a one time fee of Rupiah 50,000 allows you to get their wi-fi access for a good duration of time--we recently went daily for over two weeks with the same access password), so you can get online, eat and drink, all while enjoying a panoramic oceanfront view.

The menu is really good comfort/diner-style food. The chicken wings are to die for (and come with chunky, crispy fries with just the right amount of salt), the hamburgers are very satisfying (one of the only restaurants in the area to serve them so even more satisfying to have access to them!), guacamole/bean dip w/chips are great (avocados are seasonal...), the burritos very filling (and high on the carb side if you are a surfer who needs the calories--a bit much for a couch potato...), the fresh fruit smoothies are refreshing, the iced ginger tea is powerful (try it w/o sugar if you really want a kick...), and the BBQ whatever is always fantastic (although a few times the BBQ itself has been broken, so ask ahead of time). There is almost always daily fresh fish and of course a variety of local soups/noodles/rice/curry dishes.

As for drinks, Bintang beer is always available (and a safe choice). I wouldn't trust ordering cocktails here with vodka/gin, etc. as the brands used are likely also to be local (watchout for the hangover...). Sometimes wine by the glass is available and there are actually a couple of bearable local (Australian joint ventures) wines...they are great about asking to just try a sip first. We bring our own wine and there is no corkage charge (yet...let's hope the place doesnt' become TOO popular so this and other fab oceanfront perks disappear or are charged for....).

Finally, the staff is very friendly and as one person has mentioned, reactive. However, they are quick to provide service once you do approach them. Considering you are still out in the middle of relative nowhere, this is a fantastic little beachfront restaurant.

Great location infront of balian black sand beach.
Different wood houses for groups or families up to 8 people & surfer's suites for 2.
Good restaurant overlooking the beach, the waves & surfers.
There's nothing else around except for a few warungs and other accommodations.

No hot water in room but said there was. Pool was dirty and could not swim in it. Nicer places to stay for same price.
