“Good for the Soul”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2013

After only two nights in Kuta I was over due for the experience of Bali Eco Stay. Laying on the generous veranda couch on the first day as the kids played and a light mist of rain rolled down from the mountain I knew we were in for a wonderful five days. We loved the organic food, the green paddy fields framed by the food forests and the walks around the immediate area with its local villages, family shrines and waterfalls. My boys played in the river every day and were thrilled to explore around the top and bottom of the waterfalls. They also enjoyed the giant coconut palm swing that has been set up and spent several afternoons there. Living in Dili, Timor Leste at the moment I particularly enjoyed the cool night air that allowed me to get under the blanket without an AC. This is definitely a place I will be coming back to.
My parents joined us on this holiday and overall enjoyed the experience. My mother is a little insect phobic and managed to find some local six legged fauna. The staff were amazing and got right on to it and largely fixed the problem. I would recommend this place to any one who loves nature and a place that really takes responsible tourism seriously. John and Cath have done an amazing job in setting up Bali Eco Stay.

We're a family of five (kids aged 8 to 13) from Cambridge UK and enjoy independent travelling, particularly in Asia. We'd travelled to Bali 20yrs ago and were looking for an experience, now with a family, that would live up to our fond memories!

Bali Eco Stay turned out to be one of the most memorable stays that we've ever had. It has a beautifully remote setting in the countryside, amongst rice paddies and small villages. Our room, the Harvest Bungalow, had a view to die for over the paddies, and a spectacular open plan layout that presented the view to you almost regardless of where you stood within the bungalow. The room was a real highlight for us.

Prior to visiting we had a mild concern that a hotel managed by non-Balinese might not be authentic. That concern disappeared immediately on meeting John Blundstone, the owner, who is one of the nicest people that we've met on our travels. Superbly humble and a wonderful host. He has set up the eco lodge to be an integrated part of the local village community and it feels like a thoroughly Balinese experience. We regretted not meeting John's family who were away.

Minnie, who runs the kitchen (with superb view!) produces fantastic healthy food that our whole family enjoyed - making use of the fresh produce from the lodge's gardens. The lodge also has a fresh water spring that means that it is safe to drink and wash teeth etc, which was a very welcome luxury in the wilderness!

We did the 4hr 'purple walk' with Kadek, a wonderful young guide. He told us how he'd grown up as a lover of the outdoors, roaming the forests to find fruits and adventure, whilst his counterparts had looked to the more modern amenities of life. So patient, he took time to explain some fascinating aspects of the walk which provided further insight into Balinese life. The following day Kadek taught our sons wood carving and they were delighted to make a lizard each to hang on their walls. I also had an excellent massage with my daughter. Good value and very relaxing.

John invited us to a festival in the village which was, again, an intimate and local experience. He is clearly respected by the wonderful people that live in the area and who are, themselves, so welcoming and friendly.

In terms of practicalities, like most places in Bali, mossie repellant is required, although we saw very few - only one minor bite during the whole time. The lodge provide free incense sticks too for the open areas, plus torches for use when walking between areas at night. The sounds of frogs in the evening and birds in the morning were a true delight. Also, since its difficult to find we booked our transport to and from the lodge at Bali Eco stay, which worked well.

So, all in all, a highlight of our travels in recent years. We wished that we'd stayed at least a further day - we stayed for three nights and would recommend a minimum of four or more. A great place to chill out and to get to know a little bit of the real Bali.

Room Tip: Harvest Bungalow had one of the best outlooks we've seen in our twenty years of travelling in As...

If you after a true eco friendly holiday - this is he place. They don't just pay lip service to it - they do it. Beautiful fresh organic food, pure spring water - to drink, to shower in and to swim in. We booked Budda but stayed in Spring Water bungalow. Buddha is basic - open to the stream, has no doors and a bed in the loft - so if you are young and fit and adventurous - it would be excellent. Spring Water is next door. A little house right on the stream with an outdoor bathroom so you can have a shower in the jungle. My wife appreciated everything on the one level and the security of doors and windows. There are other bungalows over the rice paddies but for us living on the river was wonderful. Underneath out bungalow was a deck touching the stream. Our little balcony overlooked the fish ponds and the jungle on the other side. Simply beautiful hearing the water at night and the sounds of the jungle to wake up to. Clean safe and a mosquito net for a bug free sleep. We were made to feel at home with a 3 hour walking tour of the area and being dressed up for the ceremony in the local village. But the highlight was the food. Everything was delicious. Fresh and clean - 5 star cuisine from a restaurant with breathtaking views. All of this for a very reasonable price. Our bill was less then $200 a night for 2 - including everything - room food drinks tours transport and massage. Would recommend it to anyone wanting a real holiday away from the hassles and resorts.

Room Tip: Look at the web site. It depends on your needs.

Our family stayed at Bali Eco Stay for just two nights in December 2012. I have been going to Bali for almost 40 years, my partner is Balinese - yet we and our kids still found this a truly surprising and enriching experience. The place is beautiful, as are the philosophies behind it. John and Cath have created something very special, working in close partnership with the local community. Apart from the pleasure of simply being there, we loved the walks through spectacular rice terraces, bathing in the river, the friendly and helpful villagers, woodcarving lessons, beautiful organic meals, the gardens, many things. Two nights were not enough. We hope to visit again soon, you should do so too.

Just stayed 2 nights in the Harvest bungalow , what a treat!!
The views are amazing from the rooms and the restaurant, so tranquil and relaxing. I love the whole concept of responsible traveling which is what Bali Eco stay is all about. The waterfall pool, organic gardens, everything at one with nature. Even the rain is beautiful here .
Thanks to all the lovely, helpful staff, can't wait to come back.

We stayed at the Bali Eco stay for 4 nights (was only meant to be 3 but we couldn't leave) during our honeymoon last summer and it remains one of the most memorable parts of our trip. The location is stunning and a warm welcome, great service and serene atmosphere greats you from the moment you arrive. We stayed in the Little Padi bungalow and it is highly recommended, the view from the balacone that greats you each morning is stunning and is only matched by the changing colours and noises that sunset brings.

We took advantage of the many local walks and although we got lost on one occasion this only added to the fun and adventure of the stay. We would also recommend the mountain biking which as long as you are moderately fit is great fun and an excellent way to see the local countryside.

From talking to the owners and the locals the environmental credentials are truly genuine with local villagers employed either at the accomadation or as part of the activities on offer. You can wander around and see where all the fruit and vegetables you eat come from, as they are growing just over the road. Plus the watermill that provides for nearly all the power requiments of the development is just at the bottom of the hill below the bungalows.

We felt incredibly relaxed, happy and at peace at Bali Eco stay and would highly recommend it.
