Truly a special place and the food is so amazing. There are so many great cultural/local experiences there and nearby, and the people who work there are so caring and thoughtful. Best value and the meditation/yoga space is very special. Can't wait to come back!

Bali Mountain Retreat is absolutely delightful. You will arrive and be pleasantly surprised by how clean, beautiful, and elegant it is. In addition to the ambiance, the food is delicious and there are great vegetarian options on the menu. The masseuse on staff is excellent - definitely some of the best massages I have ever had. I can't recommend this place enough - I spent less than a day in Ubud and three days at Bali Mountain Retreat, and I definitely made the right choice!

Room Tip: Definitely get the teak house room with the private bathroom (the less expensive one without the bat...

Sitting on a ridge overooking jungle beauty. Excellent food, enjoyable talks with our musician host, walks in nearby traditional village with friendly folks, reasonable rates. I loved my massage, our hikes, and the natural/isolated beauty. One issue- isolation means long taxi rides and some rough patches on the road. It's worth it. We had a beautiful, noisy rooster outside. oh, well.

Stayed in this place by myself for 3 nights in March/April 2013 - absolutely great! Bali Mountain Retreat offers a place to really relax, in lovely calm and peace and quiet. The room I had was really gorgeous - big bathroom, lovely hot powerful shower, huge comfy bed and lovely decoration. Lovely touches like pretty folded towels and hot water/tea brought to your room every afternoon. Easily the nicest room I stayed in in Bali at this price range (£25-ish/night). Food in restaurant really delicious, huge portions and full of vegetables. Staff all really friendly and able to arrange a range of activities (treks, massage etc) as you want - though no pressure at all. Can't fault it!

Room Tip: I had a room with en-suite, though I think there are rooms with shared bathrooms available but same...

This place has it all and is a greatly recommended option for trvellers who wish to wonder off the beaten Bali path.

- the original owner Richard, who can tell you all about the area
- the beautiful garden, which is always very quiet
- the ever friendly staff, who will do and bring everything you ask
- the possibility of activities, from walks to cycling and motorbiking.
- Trip to Jatiluwih and Pura Luhur is now possible with a new backdoor road!
- the amazing true Balinese spiced food, which is very affordable

It is a bit hard to find, but easy with the provided map, and the road is really awful, but that is all great to block mass tourism from coming here. To watch over the jungle from the birdnest and see sunrise or sunset is simply amazing, and enough reason to make the trek.

Real hard to find, poor road, but good directions from the website. Real friendly staff, comfortable rooms, great location 700 m high.
All services (bar, restaurant, massage, trecks, bikes,....)
Real dive in a "true" Bali.
Did the three hour jungle treck with the kids, a real feast !
Far from the crowds, a must do !

Our flight arrived in Denpasar and we exited the arrival hall around 10:15pm. The arranged driver was there with his sign as promised, and quickly escorted us to the vehicle. The 2 hour estimate on the drive was very accurate, mostly because the roads to get to BMR are pitiful shape once you turn off the highway east of Tabanan, and start heading up the mountain. Be prepared for a bumpy and slow ride.

Once you do get there, you will find a very nice place. We had a Family Superior Teak Room (2 bedrooms, sharing 1 bathroom). It was comfortable, with the only minor annoyance being that there are little black ants all around. This seemed to be the case throughout the retreat. They also have 4 friendly cats (as friendly as cats can be).

The restaurant has a nice selection of meals at very reasonable prices. This is good since there is really no other choice but to eat at the retreat unless you are off on a day trip. The Chicken Curry was very good, and the banana fritters for dessert.

Putu is the head of the staff, and also serves as a local guide for the treks they offer. He took us on the trek to see the local rice terraces. This trek started off with about a 1.5 mile walk to a nearby village, then turned off the main road along a jungle path until coming out for an amazing view of the rice terraces. Along the way, we samples Guava and Durian fresh from the tree. We then trekked along the top of the rice terraces for a bit, until heading down for a quick swim in a mountain stream. Very cold, but since we were a bit hot from the walk, it was nice.

We took the day trip to the north coast to Lovina on our 2nd day. It was a good idea to get away for the day, but would probably choose differently. It was quite a long day in the Suzuki APV, for a short dip in the hot springs at Banjar, and then lunch in Lovina and a short stroll along the beach.
