“True Bali”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2013

Staying in Surya Shanti will be the highlight of your trip if want to see Authentic Bali.
Sidemen is a beautiful Balinese village in the middle of luxuriant rice fields and high hills. Landscapes from the hotel are particularly stunning. Relaxing in the swimming pool contemplating the rice fields or doing yoga worth the trip.
Surya Shanti villa are charming, food is great. You will have choice in traditional Balinese food platter or gastronomic western food. All good!
They are plenty of activities that worth staying more than one day, cooking class, trekking, adventure, spa, etc.
Personally, we have been invited by the hotel manager to participate to a Hindu ceremony that occurs only once a year. They lend us traditional clothes and integrate the event from the inside, a great experience.
No need to say that staff is really welcoming and you will definitely enjoy your stay in this establishment.
Do not hesitate!

A real experience of Bali, outside the humdrum of tourism, this is a fine villa to stay in complete with lap-pool. All quality furniture and fittings thorughout in this modern villa in an old, classic Bali-setting in the somewhat cooler hillside of Sidemen.

Room Tip: Combine modern and classic, quiet and comfort here!

Pros:
This property is beautifully landscaped, the Arjuna villa mezzanine is spacious, and the staff is attentive. There are two good-sized pools (the one in the back of the property is big enough to get good exercise swimming laps) which are well maintained. From the villas and both the pools you have amazing views of the rice fields and Mt. Agung.

Cons: No A/C...although the temperature wasn't very hot the humidity in the room was unbearable. My swim suit didn't dry after hanging up inside for two days! Due to the nearness of the rice fields, mosquitoes abound as soon as the sun starts to set. This means you have to close all windows, blocking out the cooling breezes, and stay inside in the evening or risk getting eaten alive.

Service in the restaurant was odd and VERY slow. The first night the head waiter called our room to tell us he'd bring up menus for us to select our dinner and that our meal would be ready at 7:30. We arrived in the restaurant on time only to wait 30 minutes for our beverages and another 30 minutes for our food. Meantime patrons that didn't pre-order (we didn't know we had that option) were served their food and gone by the time we got our meal. The next night we ordered room service and the food arrived on time.

Internet access is intermittent and the wi-fi signal never exceeded "Fair" when in the room or on the patio. To get a "Good" signal you need to move down to the restaurant. I hadn't expected to have internet access so this wasn't a big issue for me but I want to set correct expectations for other travelers.

The spa had no openings due to the tour packages using up all spaces. It would have been nice if the website mentioned the need to pre-book prior to arrival. We had no problem booking spa services at other hotels upon arrival.

Good to know:
This hotel caters to French tourists. As a result the staff speaks French but not much English. This wasn't a problem for us but just wanted to give travelers a heads up.

We spent two nights at Surya Shanti in July 2013. Really liked the setting. The location of the hotel is very, very quiet and the views from the room, pool and restaurant are absolutely stunning. We were in a mezzanine villa which was very spacious - our sons like their territory upstairs - with a wonderful outdoor bathroom and only a few steps from the swimming pool.

Service is - although very friendly - sometimes a bit hard to get. There seems to be indeed only one person present to take care of the restaurant, bar, room service/welcome drink and swimming pool. However, if you get up, look for this person and ask for whatever it is you need, you are served with a smile.

The buffet breakfast was poor. Not a lot of choice, 'pre-baked' miniature pancakes, some flies on the fruit, ... not very 'lush'... Dinner was ok. You need to make your choice from the menu in late afternoon which was OK for us. Balinese/indonesian dishes were better than western food. One night it was raining. When the restaurant is full it is a bit hard to get everyone to sit on the dry side of the table.

We found it quite hard to pinpoint exactly what this hotel is lacking. The rooms, the views, the cleanliness are all good. Perhaps the feeling that someone is 'in charge' ?

I normally never use the word 'perfection' in my reviews but this hotel comes as close to perfection as possible. The location is beyond what any Bali countryside stereotype could be described, with the most astonishing views over both the Agung mount and valleys covered with rice paddies. Our 'Agung 2' room was amazing. The garden is chirurgically maintained. Both eternity pools are breath-taking. The staff is awesome. A nice guided 1-hour walk through the local rice paddies is included.

It is hard to find anything bad to say, but with some effort, all I can find is that there is no wifi reception by the large pool. Also, the restaurant is good but the one of the neighbouring Subak Tabola (next door, same owner) is better despite Subak Tabola being slightly cheaper and less luxurious than Surya Shanti. We originally spent 2 nights in Surya Shantibut loved it so much that we came back later for 2 extra nights at the Subak Tabola.

Sidemen is still a preserved small countryside town, with truly friendly local people. We shared the local life at the neighbouring temple and felt totally welcomed (ceremonies, gambling, cock fightings, dancing shows). There are only few tourists there, but will this last?... For the time being, this is still a lost paradise and the undisputed peak of our 2-week honeymoon in Bali.

Sidemen is also a great place to do any 1-day trip to anywhere is the East half of Bali (Agung, Batur, Besakih, Pandang Bai, Candi Dasa, Amed...).

Stayed her only one night, as just wanting to try it.

The views from the Valley View rooms are fantastic. We were also very impressed with the food. The chicken pandan was particularly good.

The service was slightly odd, but overall good. Odd in that it is very "casual", but we quite like that.

The pool is great, with lovely views. One could spend a whole day lounging by the pool but I believe there are plenty of nice walks in the area (we chose the lounging option).

The massage / spa was very good.

Main (secondary) criticisms :

1. They allow people to smoke in the restaurant area. Personally I want to vomit when some inconsiderate idiot starts smoking next to me, and that tends to spoil the meal somewhat. They should just tell smokers to smoke in the bar area, and come back when they've managed to satisfy their cravings.

2. The rooms are not airconditioned and the (fairly slow, unable to be change the speed without a ladder) overhead fan doesn't add much as the bed has a thick netting between you and the fan. Whilst we like the natural aspect of opening the windows etc, we found the room hot. And my wife is Indonesian and I am reasonably acclimatised to Indonesian heat. Frankly, if you are sensitive to heat, I can't recommend the place. But if you are not sensitive (or dislike aircon) then the place is terrific.

Room Tip: Spend extra and get a valley view room

A very good experience. The team was helpful, kind and generous. The rooms are spacious, the view is beautiful. The food is very good. Very authentic. We recommend this hotel. Both swimming pools have a beautiful view and the architecture is very Balinese.
