We stayed at Man's Guesthouse for three nights as we went diving in Menjangan. Though everything seemed to be fine on the first sight we got disappointed pretty soon. The bungalows are spacious, clean and the staff is very friendly and exerted. We have to say that we had been staying at other hotels in Bali aswell - compared with the rest (see other reviews) we have to be fair and that`s why Man's homestay got this "poor" rating.
The negative points are:
-- At arrival we were told that the internet had not been installed yet, but said that the internet-company promised that it will be available the same day - we ended up not having WiFi for all of our stay. Probably it will still last a few more days as we found out the manager had not ordered the WiFi router yet. We would not have any problem if the owner would have been just honest to us.
-- We were travelling in the wet season, nowhere else we experienced that many mosquitos - you could not be on the verandah nor in the room, as moscitos were everywhere - not only a few, but masses of them. Though using repellent and mosquito incense-sticks we had many bites. The provided mosquito-net over the bed did not offer enough protection as it had holes.
-- The bedside lamps are broken, in general the light situation is really bad: forget reading in the room - it's just too dark. The description "luxorious" bathroom might be a little bit overdone as it for us was a normal outside bathroom. Though it was very spacious it was not too clean - especially not the toilet. Also the bathroom was a mosquito breeding-area making taking a shower pretty uncomfortable.
-- We only had lunch at the restaurant once, Sate with rice, it was cold and nothing special. Not compareable with other tasty restaurants. The complimentary breakfast contains 3 or 4 slices of toast, butter, jam, tea or coffee, fruit. Most of the time I could not eat the fruits as they obviously have been cut after dicing onions on the same chopping board.
-- The most negative thing though was that we payed too much - we did not check the final receipt. We payed tax though our booking.com voucher saying that there will be no extra charges. And additional to that, we did not pay 10% as usual, but 15%, so that our stay was more expensive than we wanted. So check your receipts before paying!!! Luckily it was only USD 21, but for us it´s not about the money, it´s about the principle. To be fair, they wanted to send us the money to our next hotel in seminyak, but as it would have been to complicated, we did not accept their offer. The excuse for the wrong bill was, that their stuff wrote the bill and they did not know better, because they are rather new - but we saw, that Man`s wife did the receipt herself. That`s the next point - as we said, we don`t like it, when somebody is not honest.
We feel very sorry about our bad rate, because the couple seemed to be very nice (beside the cheating with the wifi and the receipt) - but compared to the other places we have stayed at, we can`t give them a better rate, because it wouldn`t be fair to the other hotels.
Apart from that, we wish Man and Mia good luck with their renovations and their hotel.
