“Wow what a place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2013

This place is so relaxing, good vibe from the staff, breakfast is very good and filling. Infinity pool is awesome. Excellent views from our room. About 25 mins from ubud, costs 70k idr taxi fair. If you want relaxation and to get away from everything this is the place to go. Was given a free hour massage, cycle hire is free, free tour of the rice fields. Restaurant is very good and prices were reasonable for what you get, try the whole roast duck!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for posting about your recent experience at Alila Ubud.

Great to read that you enjoyed the horizon pool, it is a stunning setting, made even better with a crafted cocktail and a comfortable day bed!

I will also be printing your comments about the breakfast for the food & beverage team to read,it is certainly one of our strengths and a brilliant way to start the day.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Ubud on your next visit to Bali.

Kind Regards,

Alasdair Davidson

This is one of the best hotels I have visited, we had a fantastic time staying at the Alila for a week on holiday.

We were looking for somewhere which was quiet in beautiful surroundings (ie not in a built up area) but with easy access to Ubud for dinner, shopping, etc. Alila is perfect for this - on a hill set amidst rice fields, with rooms and an infinity pool overlooking the Ayung River gorge.

Our room was lovely and quiet, overlooking the gorge, with a comfortable bed and tastefully decorated. Reception service was consistently courteous and helpful.

The room rate included breakfast, which included local Balinese food, although you can order standard cereal, eggs on toast etc, if you prefer. Alila pride themselves on sourcing food locally, and I enjoyed trying the range of local food and drink on offer. We ate pool-side food and also in the restaurant a couple of times, and the food was consistently excellent. It was of course quite a lot more expensive than having a meal in Ubud, but still reasonable by UK standards, with an excellent dinner costing around the same as a standard cafe/bistro meal back home. The hotel also put on a variety of entertainment, eg local Balinese dancers and a cocktail evening, which were nice touches.

The hotel provides a 4-5x per day free shuttle to Ubud, or it is a 70,000 rupee (c.£5) taxi ride each way for a c.10-15 minute journey. We found the shuttle drops you off around a 10 minute walk away from the centre of Ubud (still, near some shops and galleries), and we would have preferred that it went the extra mile into town, although this wasn't a big issue.

We organised our own trips from the hotel on a couple of days, although you can book similar through the hotel. We hired a car and driver for the day on two occasions, and found the Ubud area to be much better than staying further south, if you are interested in heading north towards the lakes and mountains eg Mount Batur or Lake Bratan.

There is a troupe of monkeys living near the hotel, and they visit on occasion. I'm not a fan, but they didn't cause any particular issue, and are quite entertaining. Plus it saves visiting the Monkey Forest in Ubud!

We loved the hotel and highly recommend it.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback on your recent stay.

I'm glad you enjoyed your vacation and took time out to appreciate the amazing view from the rooms. I will be passing on your positive comments regarding the cuisine to the team as well as congratulating the reception staff on their courteous manner.

The coach drop off at the designated area ensures that we can return to the hotel for the next scheduled pick up time as driving further into town means we are often locked in traffic congestion. I will speak with the team to make sure we are advising our guests on the 10 minute walk from the drop off / pick up point.

Once again, thank you for your comments & look forward to welcoming you back soon!

Kind Regards,

Alasdair Davidson

We stayed here for two nights and it's was amazing! The whole experience was incredible!
Since the moment we arrived at the airport and the driver pick us up, through the fast check in and also the great facilities that we found in our villa.
The breakfast was so healthy.
And what to say about the pool? No words necessary to describe it! It won the best pool in the world and they deserved it.
The spa is also great>
But the grand finale was having the General Manager saying goodbye and greeting the guests.
Impecable! Love it!

Room Tip: Pick a villa if t's possible!

I just got back from Bali 2 weeks ago where my first stop was Alila Ubud. After a 17 hour journey we arrived after 10pm and the polite, friendly staff were waiting for us with welcome drinks and cold face towels, after a speedy checking were escorted to our room.

We had a valley villa room, which was very spacious and beautifully designed to compliment the surroundings. Ipod dock, flat screen TV, coffee machine, huge comfortable beds with netting and natural insect repellent was also provided. Staying at the Alila puts you at the foot of the forest so expect some small visitors...it's all part of the experience of being so close to nature.

When we woke and pulled up the blinds and the views were amazing, binoculars are provided too. We were surrounded by the forest where we spotted a family of monkeys, heard the chitter chatter of all kinds of birds and animals.

The breakfast is great where you get to choose up to 3 items from each section of the menu that changes daily - bonus! Lots of healthy options.

Infinity pool is amazing as is the spa at Alila. There are many spas in and around the area that are cheaper, however the choice of treatments available and the experience of the staff is outstanding. Highly recommended.

All in all our stay was excellent, from the room and facilities to the wonderfully helpful and friendly staff. The only thing I would say is that as strict vegetarians there were not that many options for dinner. The staff did try and make dishes for us but I would have to say that the food was a little bit of a let down. There is only one main restaurant, as the other is really a a bar/snack lounge and Ubud is about 15 minutes away by the hotel shuttle (which is complimentary and regular trips), so you might want to go into town.

Excellent stay for couples, friends and a great place to relax, unwind and enjoy the nature around you.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking time out to post your review.

It's great to read that you enjoyed the Valley Villa, they have the best view of all & nature's television when you open the blinds in the morning is magnificent to behold. Appreciate your comment on the spa, we have a very experienced team at Spa Alila so it is an affirmation of their hard work to see the word "outstanding" in your review!

I'm glad you also enjoyed the breakfast and I have met with our chef regarding options for vegetarian / vegan diets, we are now reviewing personalised menus for strict dietary requirements.

Once again, thank you for your valuable feedback & we look forward to welcoming you back home in the future.

Kind Regards,

Alasdair Davidson

We were in our honeymoon at first I was concerned at remote location and if we would be bored staying 3 nights. After having our first meal I was really impressed with quality and presentation which was 1st class. We had a limited budget so prices were quite high especially the spa which is over 500k for an hour bali massage which we did treat ourselves to. Was very good but as stated quite expensive. The food to me was the highlight the breakfast which was included was outstanding I could not wait to eat every day the menu Changed and never disappointed always fresh and innovative ingredients. Would highly recommend but 3 nights more then enough time for us

Dear Guest,

We appreciate you taking the time to post your review.

Thank you for the praise regarding the breakfast, it is one of the top experiences that guests highlight when we speak to them during their stay and one we are very proud of. I often highlight to our newly arriving guests to make time to really enjoy the varying morning cuisine.

Sorry to hear that you felt the spa was expensive, we base our pricing on comparable resorts in the area & feel that we offer an experience that justifies the pricing. Our spa manager is always happy to discuss personalised packages and prices that can offer you numerous spa experiences over several days.

Once again thank you for your comments & we look forward to seeing you for your next Alila Ubud adventure.

Kind Regards,

Alasdair Davidson

We stayed here in early October 2013. Were quite impressed with the location. Really stunning right in the forest extremely peaceful and calm. The rooms have a traditional touch and very comfortable. The breakfast is really different and excellent. Staff is amazing specially Jerry who also upgraded us. Also like to thank Puriana who took great care and showed us around the local market.

Dear Guest,

Greetings from Alila Ubud & thank you for your kind comments.

I am grateful for the positive mention of both Jerry & Puriana who, along with the entire team, work very hard to make everyone's stay personalised and memorable.

It's great that you noticed the traditional touch in the rooms, it was an important aspect that the designers, Kerry Hill Architects, focussed on, bringing the natural surroundings into the room & blending them with modern convenience.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Alila Ubud on your next journey to Bali!

Kind Regards,

Alila Ubud, is a delightful 56 Rooms & 8 Villas resort tucked away in the rice fields and overlooking the Ayung River. This is the former Chedi Hotel, under new management. Noel Cameron, an experienced hotelier, is now the new GM. The dining on the terraces is a treat as well as the spa. There is a frequent shuttle to Ubud for those that want to explore. Local troupes of monkeys come to the resort each evening at dusk and are entertaining as one lies around the pool and watches them. The spa was amazing and appointments as late as 9pm make it a perfect end to the day.

Room Tip: Deluxe Rooms on the lower level.. 201-218 or a villa with a private pool

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review, I appreciate the feedback & it's great to be able to convey the feedback with the team.

Glad to read that you enjoyed the visits by our local wildlife, many of the guests consider it a highlight of their stay to come so close to the monkeys.

The spa is always a treat after a long day of walking through the centre of Ubud or hiking Mt. Batur, Kintamani and as you said, treatments until 9pm, make it the perfect remedy for a good night's sleep!

The team and I look forward to welcoming you back.
