“Great Property”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

An amazing property, in a location that will make you forget day to day live almost instantly.
We stayed on a deluxe room. To be honest was expecting better of five star hotel, but the room as nice, the bed was very comfortable, the bathroom was also nice and the outdoor shower good.
The view from the room is good not awesome. No lounge chairs on the small patio.

The pool, the view from restaurant, the breakfast and the property all together they are awesome!

The breakfast is one of best I have ever and served in the restaurant with am awesome view is the highlight of the Alila Ubud.

Transfer to Ubud is limited to 10 and 11 am and 3PM and 4PM. Transfer from Ubud is at 10h30, 11h30 am and 3h30pm and 4h30 pm. So no good if you want to stay for dinner in Ubud.
You would have to come back by Taxi.

Room Tip: The Deluxe rooms are nice but maybe not worth the price difference for a superior room. I have not...

We stayed at the Alila for our first few days of our Honeymoon. The infinity pool and the location is the stand out feature of this hotel. To wake up to nothing but uninterrupted views of the rainforest is amazing. Likewise the pool offers a stunning view of the valley. The rooms were comfy and adequate - we received a congratulatory box as it was our honeymoon but unfortunately it was taken away before we could drink all the delicious goodies. Breakfast was amazing with lots of choice. We also ate in the restaurant in the evening. The only negative about this hotel was the lack of free shuttle runs during the evening - the provision of this service would make this the perfect place to stay in Ubud.

I stayed here 5 years ago and just came back from my second visit. The property was still great with stunning views and an amazing pool. However I must say the standard of their service has so obviously declined. It was a shame that the service could not match everything else the property offered.

1. During our last visit, the staff greeted guests by their names and went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. Not this time.

2. There weren't enough sun beds by the pool in the afternoon. It was low season and the hotel was not even full.

3. Some of the tiles in the pool were broken. Repair work needed.

4. Hotel guests were mainly old couples and families with children. One day there were 2 boys playing football and screaming IN the tranquil pool, for hours. It might be the time of our visit, but if you want a blissful getaway this is something you should be aware of.

5. Our room was not made up after breakfast. We then went to the pool and for spa treatment and when we came back at noon, our room was still not made up. We had to ask them to make up the room at the reception.

6. We asked the reception staff for restaurant recommendations. He just threw some big names - Nomad, Mosaic etc - places mentioned in every travel book. It is fine to recommend usual places, but he should have at least asked what kind of food we wanted, Western or Asian, high end restaurant or casual bistro.

7. We booked a spa treatment before our arrival. We only found out upon our arrival, on a piece of paper left in our room, that Spa Alila was being renovated and treatments were moved to another area. The treatment itself was excellent, but I would have thought they should tell about the renovation at the time of booking.

8. The only thing that exceeded my expectation was the Plantation Restaurant. The food and the service were excellent. Keep it up.

Unless and until Alila Ubud revive the level of service I would not consider returning for a 3rd visit.

It was my husband and my 2nd visit to Alila Ubud to celebrate our 7th year wedding anniversary. 7 years ago, we celebrated our honeymoon at Alila too. The things that stood out for us even after the 7 years was the amazing view from the pool and the great service provided.

The resort planned a half a day programme for our anniversary - a beauty n balance spa, followed by a photoshoot around the resort and ended of with a romantic 6 course dinner at Bale Bengong.

We were disappointed about the spa ambience. Found out that spa place was under renovation upon arrival and we were escorted to a villa for make shift place. We were also served water for the pre n post spa treatment instead of ginger or lemon grass drink which we felt was unusual. If we had known about the renovation, we might have skip the spa treatment.

Thankfully the wonderful assistance that we had from Alila staff for the photoshoot and the planned menu from chef for romantic dinner made up for the disappointment. We had lots of fun with the photographer that the resort recommended. Food and wine was lovely! The server was also very attentive to our needs during the romantic dinner.

We also enjoyed the cultural and lifestyle tour that Alila planned for us. Visited a Balinese village, art school, coffee plantation, waterfall and 2 art galleries. The highlights were the village and learning how kopi luwak was made! The tour guide was very knowledgable and shared many interesting stories abt Bali culture. Breakfast food was served daily and we enjoyed it very much. Top notch quality taste!

Thank you Alila staff for the service from the heart! Overall it has been a wonderful experience and would recommend a visit to Alila if you're looking for a place of rest and retreat with warm Balinese hospitality. The view from the pool and surroundings of the resort location was truly restful and awesome. Thanks again!

If you are looking for a boisterous lively place with music, bar top dancing and DJ's playing into the sunrise this is NOT the place for you.
Rather Alila is a perfect retreat. The sounds of the cicadas in the rainforest lull you to sleep and the service is gentle and beautifully discreet in a true Balinese style.
The breakfast was different everyday combining local produce and ingredients; snake fruit soaked in a cinammon syrup, special Jamu - Indonesian herbal tonics, delicious fruit smoothies....
The decor was simple and understated and yet undeniably Balinese.
The infinity pool was one of the nicest pools I have ever swam in. It seems the other guests also bought into the tranquility and queit of the place. the pool, whilst busy never felt crowded or noisy.

Room Tip: We stayed in a room not a villa - it was simple and comfortable. I suspect the villas and pool villa...

We stayed for 4 nights in the tree villa.

This a hotel in a great setting and could be absolutely fantastic but there are lots of issues which management need to deal with:

The room never gets cleaned unless you ring and request it. We ordered lunch in the villa, the dirty plates and empty cans where still there at 11pm. We rang and told reception so someone merely picked them up and dumped them infront of the villa in the bushes!!! For us to see in the morning.

This is apparently low season but one day at the pool there was not enough beds! Furthermore two of the beds I moved were broken! That is dangerous. The staff said we don't have any more so can't move away! How appalling!

Majority of the sun bed towels have stains.... Disgusting!!!!

The floor around the pool and the tiles in the pool many are broken needing repair! A disaster waiting!

The pool side service is slow and the staff are forgetful, but extremely pleasant and welcoming so very hard to get annoyed at them!

The shuttle service is very sporadic forcing you to use private taxis which the hotel takes a cut of 20 000!

On the plus the staff are very welcoming and the food is very good.

I would need to think twice before coming back to this resort, especially after having the best villa in the resort and quality being so sub standard!

This is the second time we've stayed at this hotel. The first time was in a superior room, which was nothing special. The second time was in a villa with a private swimming pool with the highlight of the room being a huge lotus pond surrounding the outdoor bathtub, which was exquisite. Based on these experiences I would recommend this place if you can stay in the more luxurious rooms.

Food, service, view and guest amenities all first rate. The long meandering drive to the resort through picture perfect rice fields is a nice welcome to the hotel as well.
