“Better and Better”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

The hotel staff told me this was our 7th visit to the Alila. Says it all, really.

For once the website pictures are an accurate reflection of this beautiful hotel. In fact, the pictures can't convey the sense of peace and well-being this hotel delivers to guests.

Rooms and suites are well thought out (without being over the top) and comfortable but cannot be described as luxurious. If you can, get a deluxe room - the day beds are worth every extra cent! To lie outside, looking over the beautiful lawns and pool, listening to the breeze rustling through the coconut fronds is one of life's small treasures.

I can't speak highly enough of the staff. Professional but always friendly they are genuinely interested in your comfort. Front desk (including the lovely Dewi) are a happy and helpful crew. Restaurant staff know their business and everything tastes better because of the beautiful smiles that accompany every dish. Housekeeping cannot be faulted and the cleanliness of the rooms is excellent.

The large open air restaurant offers good food in a beautiful setting. It features many East Bali dishes (the megibung platter is a must if you get the chance) but all the dishes we sampled were thoughtful and well presented. You can eat more cheaply in Candi Dasa but, given the setting, never so well.

The grounds give the hotel a wonderful feel. Vast expanses of carefully tended lawns and barricades of flowering shrubs frame the large square swimming pool which is surrounded by numerous sun beds and large umbrellas. The pool staff move the beds anywhere you like, provide freshly laundered large towels & bring iced water - all with a smile and a happy greeting.

A free afternoon tea is provided daily, featuring Balinese cakes and confections. Watching the ocean whilst seated under a coconut palm with a mug of "Bali Kopi" was a real pleasure.

My wife tells me the Spa delivered a 1st rate treatment.

To be truthful Allila Manggis is the reason we keep returning to Bali. It's restful, beautiful, small (54? rooms/suites) and utterly delightful. Go now.

Room Tip: Choose a deluxe room - they have a day bed that will make your stay!

Alila Manggis is a great place to stay in East Bali.

As soon as we arrived we were welcomed by the staff, they were really attentive and helpful during our entire stay. We had lost one of our bags in transfer at Bangkok. The staff gave us a lot of help with getting hold of our luggage.

The deluxe rooms include a marvelous balcony overlooking the garden, the pool area and the sea. There is a great restaurant at the premises, they have a selection of delicious Balinese and international dishes. I recommend you stick to the Balinese ones, cause these are really tasty. Do also try the Megibung sharing menu for a selection of Balinese favorites. Every day they do specials like sea food barbecue buffet. Even though great the restaurant is a quite pricy.

Be aware that the resort is a few miles from any town center, they do arrange a whole lot of trips and activities. Like hiking, cycling, yoga, cooking classes, massage etc. Of course these activities cost extra so be prepared to spend some money if you don't want to spend all your time at the resort.

The pool area is really nice and has a pool service, unfortunaltely this pool service is very slow, and there isn't any other option for getting food and drink to the pool area (except for minibar)

We got a complimentary cooking class in the organic garden, this was a really great experience. We learned how to Cook a Balinese multi course meal from the ground up. Thanks to Chef Santika for a great course.

All in all our stay at Alila Manggis was an awesome start to our three week Bali holiday.

We have recently returned from a memorable holiday in Bali, staying at 3 Alila Resorts - Soori, Ubud and Mangis. We travelled as a family - parents + 4 children + 2 grandmothers and we had previously stayed at all properties. This was a very last minute booking for school holidays and yet it was dealt with expertly by the amazing Alila team.

We enjoyed each of the resorts and that is thanks to not only their world class attention to every detail but also because it is always delivered with Balinese charm and warmth by their truly delightful staff. You feel that you are in safe hands from the moment you are greeted outside the terminal at Denpasar and whisked off to your car where cold towels and water are waiting.

All the resorts are very special but we do love the Mangis and it was 6 days of absolute bliss and relaxation with afternoon tea of Balinese treats served on the lawn, watching the sea and boats from the balcony, relaxing massages at the Spa and gourmet feasts in the restaurant. So thank you to everyone at the Alila for making us feel so welcome on your beautiful Island of Bali.

Alila Manggis probably has the best staff at any hotel I've stayed at. Everyone was friendly, helpful and GENUINE. We had a small issue with our room, and Dewi and others went above and beyond. The staff made our visit here.

We were upgraded to the suite for a day, then moved upstairs so we stayed in every room type. The rooms are adequate but not luxurious. (It was a tough transition for us, as we came from a giant villa at Alila Ubud). Storage for two people with large suitcases was not the best but we managed. As others noted, there is ONE electric outlet, which is a bit tough in these days of several devices.

The rooms upstairs (deluxe) has a lovely balcony with a daybed that was a great place to relax and read a book, or take a nap. The lower floor (superior) was very convenient to the pool.

The suite was the size of two rooms, with a large bathroom as well as living and dining area, plus a wrap around balcony with two of the heavenly daybeds.

The food was quite good, and the special dinner with satay was worth it. I quite enjoyed the corn fritters with chili sauce were my favorite lunchtime snack. We saw some other guests taking a cooking class with the chef that looked quite fun.

The pool is probably the highlight. It's a large square pool in the center of the property, with plenty of comfortable, roomy chairs at all times. A staff member tended to your every need. Depending on the time of day, there could be a fair number of kids at the pool, so it would get pretty loud. There's a nice pagoda as well to enjoy the views of the ocean. The beach is quite rocky so it's okay for a walk but not really for sunbathing. We did see a pair of cows wander on to the beach one evening! If you want a beach experience, you should head to "White Sandy Beach."

The hotel also had daily activities you could arrange, and a free yoga and tai chi class. Our guides on the trek through rice paddies and the jungle were great. The town was just a 10 or 15 minute ride away.

We also enjoyed the spa on the property. The balinese massage outside with the waves crashing was heavenly and quite a bargain.

Room Tip: For standard rooms, pay a bit more and choose the deluxe option. This is on the second floor and has...

We came to Alila Manggis for our honeymoon and, quite honestly, we couldn't have imagined a better place in the world to have chosen!! We were welcomed with champagne and flower petals scattered over our bed, and, as if that weren't enough, our room looked over the ocean AND the swimming pool, just steps away!! One of the most amazing things about Alila Manggis was without question the staff who worked there. They were incredibly attentive, kind and welcoming, they remembered our names and room number off the top of their heads and were always ready to help us with anything from organising custom-made bicycle trips to bringing water to our room at the slightest request. Most of all, one had the feeling that they loved their job, and that they genuinely enjoyed talking to us and helping us get the absolute most out of our holiday. In fact it's one of the things we remember most - they were always smiling! :)

Another aspect of Alila that we just loved was its sustainability and eco-friendliness. It wasn't too much, but then it's the little things you really notice: homemade delicious-smelling bath and shower products refilled in gorgeous ceramic pots to save plastic waste; divinely fresh food produce in the restaurant; organic & natural products in the spa that made you feel like you were being covered in flowers! The Balinese massage was to die for - a lovely experience as a couple, or by yourself, listening to the pounding of the sea on the shore.

And, speaking of food - we can't praise the chef enough!! He came around our tables every evening to check how we liked our food, and even organised a private romantic dinner for us by the beach with what is quite possibly the best menu we've ever had! We couldn't get enough of the fresh seafood, vegetables and homemade ice cream - the white chocolate and cardamom was divine!

Last of all were the experiences. We made several trips - snorkelling, biking to the nearby Bat Cave Temple, and climbing Mount Batur to see the sun rise. The last was absolutely magical - being on top of a volcano and watching the sun rise over the clouds and sea is something we'll never forget, and it was a wonderful way to say goodbye to Bali. The hotel organised everything flawlessly and, quite simply, made the trip of our lifetime possible. We couldn't recommend Alila Manggis more highly, and can't wait to visit some of the other Alila resorts around the world!! Thank you so much for a wonderful stay!!

Room Tip: Rooms on the lower floor are amazing as you can walk right out of your floor-to-ceiling window to th...

Good bits:
- Excellent staff, made us feel welcome and at ease. Attentive but not too in-your-face.
- Great activity options - snorkelling close by, day trip to Mount Batur exceptional.
- Restaurant lovely and authentic.
- Cookery class fabulous.
- Rooms clean and have what you need
- Great massages by the sea. Try the ice treatment for something different!
- Cute little area tucked away by the sea to practice yoga
- Comfortable, relaxed atmosphere.

Less good:
- Rooms a little on the basic side. We booked the deluxe rooms (upper floor with balcony) and it still didn't feel luxurious at all - though perfectly fine.
- As other reviews mention, there are industrial boats out at sea within view of the hotel. Don't let this stop you coming to the hotel though - they stop the views taking your breath away but no more than that.

Room Tip: Go deluxe - nice balcony,

We stayed in this hotel for two nights at the end of our trip, and found it to be a comfortable and comvenient place to stay. Though this is a large hotel, we found it managed to keep an intimate feel. Breakfast was very good. We did not test the restaurant as we had a car and prefered exploring the street food options in the area. Pool is also delightful, and the afternoon tea a real plus. Staff is kind, helpful and efficient.
