“Tranquil paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

We were lucky to book a room last minute for 3 nights (and added on a 4th because we loved it so much) during the busy Christmas holidays. However busy was NOT how it felt at Alila Manggis. Always quiet, calm and relaxing. A lovely welcome drink and cool cloth when you arrive and sit while the staff check you in. We stayed in a standard room which was anything but standard. Comfortable bed, very clean, nice bathroom and bathroom toiletries, great view from the deck and day bed for reading. Pool is big and nice and cool. Always enough chairs to lay on. Great staff ready to help you get a scooter, book a boat or just chat! Food was unreal. Breakfasts were the best we had in the 3 weeks in Indo. Delicious coffee and you get addicted to the afternoon tea they make. Dinner is romantic with candlelight looking over the gardens and ocean. Lots of choices and great price. Would definitely return.

Alila Manggis , I should say a great Alila experienced. As a travel writer, I have been around reviewing variety places to stay, until the point I came for Dinner at Alila Manggis then Lunch where at the end, we decided to take the whole family to stay at Alila. With all local key personnel, I could say everyone , each one of them have the passion towards their work. From the bell boy to the General Manager Mr. Sena. As we had our breakfast, lunch and dinner, we can see how passion Mr Santika the executive chef.
Alila Manggis leaves a great memory, their service and dedication in the hospitality industry is beyond expectation. Worth to stay and amazing experienced...

Lovely hotel in beautiful grounds

The first thing to say here is that the staff are fantastic, especially when compared to the other hotel we stayed at on Bali- I can only assume that they have a better manager here who keeps the staff happy and motivated, nothing was too much trouble.
The hotel building is nice, the grounds and pool are beautiful.
The food in the restaurant was amazing! the menu was extensive and the chef visited each table personally which is a really nice touch considering the long shift he had just finished.
We ate under the stars by the sea as it was my wife's birthday which made it even more special
Again no bar area, but at least this hotel did have some comfy settees where you could sit for pre or post dinner drinks.

The room was nice but quite dated now, it could do with a refurbishment program I feel. The balcony made up for this though, big day bed and ocean view- I would recommend booking the first floor rooms to get the balcony.
Our ensuite had a revolting sewerage smell- having spoken to other guests in the same block they too had the same issue, however when I mentioned to the staff they were very helpful and did offer to move us but as we were only there for one night we declined.

No fault of the hotels this one- but I was under the impression it was a beach side resort which although it is right on the coast it has no beach area, this was probably my fault for not researching enough but may be a help to others know this in advance.

All in a nice hotel- not one where I would choose to stay for more than a couple of days but definitely one to consider

Room Tip: Book a room on the first floor with a balcony- its worth it for the privacy and the view

Alila Manggis is a simple hotel in the east of Bali, away from most of the bustle of Kuta and Ubud. The service is gracious and the restaurant Seasalt is excellent. The pool is a wonderful place to just relax. But there is enough interesting villages and life around to explore as well. Like the water garden, Tirta Gangga and Mount Batur. This is the place to have the peaceful break and be pampered.

This was our second stay, the last was in 2003. We had forgotten what a great place this is.
From the personal greetings by Dewa and his amazing team to chef Santika and his superb menu and desire to ensure that everyone is catered for. We had just had a less than mediocre food experience at another hotel so upon arrival at Alila we were thrilled to see a menu that included fantastic local dishes as well as fusion and some staple western dishes (but done with style). We soon learnt that a lot of the ingredients are organic and locally produced. The breakfast menu is exceptional and there are daily specials. We tried as many different dishes as possible without a disappointment.
We encourage Alila to produce a cook book, Chef Santika has a lot to offer!
This Kerry Hill designed resort has not dated and looks fresh if not better after sixteen years. It is a good size and does not feel crowded even when at capacity. The large central pool is pleasant with attentive service and it is also worth grabbing a sun lounge over by the beach and taking a dip there don't be afraid of small amounts of seaweed.
Alila also has an interesting environmental program including an initiative to encourage recycling education and waste collection in the local community. It would be good to see more information about progress and achievements of this program posted regularly on the Alila website.
This hotel is excellent value and worth a long weekend mini break return soon.

Alila Manggis is a fabulous resort. I am a foodie and this place hits all the right notes. The chef here is fantastic and the food was superb from the sticky pork spare ribs in Balinese spices to the chocolate ravioli. The rooms are lovely (we were in 205 which had a fabulous view of the sea) and have everything you need. The pool is a big square pool - big enough to avoid other guests. It is also a small resort so it never feels crowded. The other thing that sets this place apart is the service - it was our wedding anniversary and we were treated to some very special surprises (thank you!). The spa is also fab - we had treatments in the bale by the water - heaven.

Writing my review while overlooking the Alila's well kept grounds and after a spa treatment. So I am very relaxed. The staff, the room,(we are in a unexpectedly large room 222), the pool are quiet lovely. The food is spectacular, and I love how the dining area overlooks the water. We are looking forward to taking the cooking class tomorrow. They offer a multitude of treks, all kinds and classes. As stated in their literature there is no beach. It is beach of large black rocks, that disappears at high tide. But this was not a drawback to me, as the sound of the water and watching the locals cast out their fishing nets ( at 6: 30 AM) was really perfect. Really enjoying my stay.Oh and there is no fitness center....I did not mean to rate it.

Room Tip: Corner suite is large and sunny, with great views.
