We took a walk along the road by the beach in Padangbai to find a hotel for the night before we headed for the Airport. We were gong to start at the Zen In which I had read good reviews about on trip advisor, but met a young woman opposite the Kembar Hotel before we arrived there. She offered to show us some rooms. On the first floor they had vacant air-conditioned rooms with a fan and bathroom with hot showers and western style toilet looking out onto the passageway. It was IDR 200,000 or IDR 150,000 if you did not need the Aircon. There was an open area with a balcony just down the passage overlooking the street with tables & chairs where you could eat or just relax. My friends were happy with this room, but I was going to look around a bit more, when the woman mentioned they also had a room on the roof.
We ascended via a narrow spiral staircase into an open room with table chairs and a bed facing onto a large rooftop courtyard with a room in one corner. The room smelt fresh and looked clean. The bed was nicely made with clean sheets and 2 towels laid out. The bathroom also looked clean and had a western style flushing toilet with toilet paper & fresh soap. The shower was in the middle of the bathroom, so the whole bathroom floor gets wet when you shower, but this is quite common in Indonesia. It was IDR 250,000 if you used the Aircon, or IDR 200,000 if you just used the fan and you basically had the whole top floor to yourself. I chose the Aircon which worked very well.
It was nice sitting out on the roof garden in the evening & there was a good sized clothes horse to dry our swimming gear on after snorkeling. The room prices include breakfast, which consisted of a buffet of fresh fruit on the first floor followed by either Banana, or pineapple pancakes or egg on toast and tea or coffee, which we ordered from the open kitchen at the bottom of the stairs and they bought up to the top floor.
The staff were friendly and helped me get my suitcase up and down the spiral staircase, which was a bit of a challenge. The atmosphere was very casual. The hotel is about 20 to 30 meters from the beach where you can easily hire a boat to go snorkeling if you like. Overall I enjoyed my stay, but would recommend you ask for the top room, which provided an original experience, including watching the sunrise from the roof courtyard.
