My fiance and I stayed at the Courtyard Hotel in September/October with a friend of ours earlier this year. We found it online and booked 2 double rooms. We had no recommendations for it and as well seasoned travellers who usually have a bit more idea before they arrive, were wondering if it would live up the the pics online. We booked via the internet and received a discount rate which was a good start. When we arrived reception was a little flustered and abrupt, but after settling into our rooms, our 8 day stay turned out to be perfect!
The rooms were spread around a central "courtyard" (which is taken up entirely by the joint 2 pools, lined with sun beds) and the whole area is clean, tidy and simple yet so relaxing and green!
Our room was ground level opening onto a small balcony which stepped down to the pool level - really nice. Our friend had a second floor room behind the kitchen which was much larger and had huge private balcony. There were also 1 and 2 bedroom apartments but none were available during our stay - they looked great though! All privately owned but rented out through the hotel.
Our room was a decent size and had a good bed, cable TV, AC that worked well, a small bar fridge with a mini bar and also 4 bottles of free water each day (glass, not plastic - rank them and was fine!) The shower was a little pokey and got a little smelly now and then but they cleaned the room daily and made up the bed etc and it was fine.
Security was fine - not tight, but we didnt have a problem, the place is relatively small.
Breakfast was included in our room cost and was GREAT! simple - just fruit, toast and coffee and juice, but fresh and tasty and the coffee was BRILLIANT :) We upgraded every few days and got eggs, but otherwise they refilled our bread basket happily for free.
I would have to say I dont recommend eating in, the food down the street at the much dirtier looking bars was better tasting personally, but then I like spice and flavour. I just found their curries etc very very bland. (The prawn caesar salad was amazing though!)
The staff are super friendly and great fun for a lugh with! We were there while several unit owners were there also, very very friendly and great fun to hang out with! We are all late 20's and they were mid 6's and they could certainly keep up!!!
The Courtyard is far enough away from the main hustle and bustle but close enough that a good daily work - which does you good after all the Bintang anyway - gets you wherever you need to be easily! It was not close to Kuta, but thats exactly what we were after - really don't like that area.
All in all The Courtyard was perfect for us - we wanted something that was not super westernised but still with mod cons. Somewhere where you could actually run into some Balinese people fairly regularly without them always being the housekeepers etc - basically NOT a bi western resort. Courtyard is small, intimate, friendly and seemed more local :) I'd thoroughly recommend it to those wanting comfort without extravagance and cleanliness without over-pampering. We'll be back :)
