“Young couple at Bali Mandira.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2012

We stayed in end of february - beginning of March for two weeks in a ground floor delux club villa. We paid for a superior cottage but we were given an upgrade on arrival. Like previous reviews, the reception was a little bit of a worry upon arrival as it is quite small and run down, but after walking away and towards the room my first impression changed. Our room was quite large, the bed was huge so this did take alot of space up in our room. We had a great plazma tv with a good movie channel. Our air-con for the first few days was making a weird noise and started leaking, we didnt complain just left it off for the day with towels under it and when we got back room-service had gotten someone to fix it after noticing the towels. Room service was never done at the same time, and a few times when sleeping in till after 9.30am they did knock. But always cleaned it well and were always friendly. The bathroom was a little old and looks as if it will need to be done up soon, there was an out door shower which went hot to cold every five minutes, we never said anything but assuming the neighbours did complain as towards the end reception rang us and told us they will fix it, and they did. As the cottages were sets of four, our out-door shower was next to someone elses and i could hear everyword they said while in the bathroom, including their complaining about the shower going hot and cold!
Breakfast was great and always had lots of food. The toaster was very slow and there was often only 3 types of fruits available. Drinks and food by the pool was also very good.
Service through out the hotel was great.
The ground level pool was a little run-down but nice and refreshing, if it was a hot day though the pool would be quite warm. There wasnt much shade over the pools untill the after-noon aswell. The floor around the pool was also extremely hot so you need to wear thongs around it! The top adults only pool water was always dirty but it was very relaxing with great views and a breeze.
The location is great. We had a bike and parked in the bike car-park, much more convenient then finding and paying for a taxi. Security at the front were also very friendly and helped out with our bike and trying to find a spot to park.
A few loud kids towards the end, nothing wrong with kids having fun but when your trying to relax it can be a bit too much - adult pool doesnt have this problem. If you want a drink or a snack you have to walk all the way down and order at the bar, unlike the ground floor pool right next to the bar.
Lounges infront of the bar are great to have a drink during the sun-set.
The weather was generally always hot, though it was very dark and cloudy for about 4 days in a row so we didnt get any sun then. It did rain alot at night which was frustrating when being on the back of a bike. But most days were sunny and nice and the low season is deffinitely reccommended because there is far less tourists around. The markets and taxi's are a little more expensive in the low season, but obviously hotels are cheaper.
It was overall great hotel and location I would definitely reccommend this place for a couple!

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the pool. Alot of rooms are quite far at the back of the hotel.

We recently stayed at the bali Mandira and booked because the hotel was promoting a free upgrade from the superior cottage to the Deluxe Club. Throughout the Mandira website it was promoted that the Deluxe room clients were entitled to Club Lounge facilities however upon arrival we were very disappointed to find that people who recieved room upgrades were not entitled to these benefits.
My suggestion is that this is clearly stipulated in future promotions as this was the ONLY reason we booked the Bali Mandira.

The Bali Mandira is in a great location, right on the beach and an easy walk from several great dining options both in Legian and on the beach- Indo something, one of the first places you come to after turning right out of the hotel is truly excellent, Great food, staff and ambience in a colonial style building and they were brilliant with our 1 year old (at the time). Given we ate there a few times I should remember the name! Mozzarella along the beach front (right out of the beach side of the hotel and walk for 5-7 minutes) is a fantastic place for watching the sunset or a long, shady lunch. great service again. They also have a place in town.
The surf schools are great, I hired a board for a few hours and the surf is beginner friendly and you'll be up in no time (though I've surfed a little before, my total lack of ability still managed to catch plenty of waves)
There is an on site travel agent who will book your trips and tours for you and also plenty of cabs right outside the hotel.
The club package is worth it for the free drinks, relaxing lounge and balcony plus snacks early evening/late afternoon.
The "buts": if you are pretty relaxed about little irritations then the Mandira is great. If you are not, you'll start to get the hump. The water taking forever to drain away is just bit of a pain at the start and end of each day. The onsite dining is expensive for what it is and makes no sense with so many options nearby. The beach is..... long, wide, sandy and pretty good. But if you've spent time on beaches in Oz, Thailand, West of Ireland, Scotland etc etc you wont be raving about it. It's worth taking an early morning walk and seeing the beach come to life with joggers, surfers, local families etc. I loved it at this time. Before the hawkers piled in. They are just trying to make a living but a polite "no thanks" every 10 minutes gets to be a bit annoying after a few days.
The hotel is a bit tired in parts, but I found it charming. The chalet style rooms are fine, and the outdoor showers lovely. However, we had problems with mozzies and with a baby that wasn't on. We upgraded to a newer room and it was faultless. Apart from been 3 floors up and the lift was out for a few days, but these things happen and I needed the push chair carrying exercise!
Overall, it's your attitude that will define your stay. The buffet breakfast was pretty good, but the tables over looking the sea whilst eating it were fantastic. If you get a good deal, are not really fussy and happy to go with the flow its a great place to stay.

Room Tip: get a new one

The Bali Mandira is in a perfect location and has gorgeous grounds.

My husband and I had a 7 night stay in a Deluxe Club room and felt as if we could have stayed longer. The Mandira is located in Legian which we found perfect - away from the craziness of Kuta but close enough to walk in to Kuta if you are feeling energetic, or cheap taxi ride away (about $2 AUD, if that). The taxi ride is cheap but it can be just as quick to walk due to the crazy traffic. The Mandira is also located close to Seminyak, where there are many beautiful places to eat (Potato Head in Seminyak is amazing and a must visit if you are in Bali - bring your bathers). There are many gorgeous cheap restaurants within easy walking distance from the Mandira too (Mozzarella, Indonational and Bianco's are all on the same street). The food from the Mandira was always delicious and very reasonably priced too. Breakfast was lovely - loved the banana pancakes!

One of the best features we found was the adult pool. As we were there during off season the pools were never overly busy, but it was nice to have a quiet pool to escape to. The adult infinity pool was a brilliant place to watch the sun setting over the sea. We often swam in the normal pool though as during the day it had shade.

The room was clean and well tended to. The air conditioner worked brilliantly, it dripped occasionally but nothing to worry about. The outdoor shower was an awesome touch! Unfortunately it would switch between hot and cool without us touching the tap. We probably should have mentioned it to staff but didnt. A cold shower in Bali isn't that big a deal, given the hot weather!

Staff were always so friendly. We loved the gorgeous J.Free (pronounced Geoffrey) who made us feel welcome and became our friend. The grounds had so many lush flowers and plants. Because of our room type we had free club benefits which include complimentary: soft drink all day, afternoon tea, internet usage, cocktails between 4:00 and 5:30.

The in room wi-fi was slow and often disconnected. Whenever we wanted to use the internet we just went to the computer room as we had free internet usage there anyway. Given that was the only complaint, we would highly recommend staying there to any couples or families. If you are a group of young people looking for nightlife, you'd be better off in a resort in Kuta.

Room Tip: Room 209 - Deluxe club room

After arriving through the busy streets of Legian I was a bit worried about noise but it was soon put to rest. The hotel is situated on the beach with a small service road in front which the hawkers are not allowed to enter. We booked in early and were told our room would be ready soon and please go down to the pool bar for a free cocktail much appreciated. We had a room in the 4 floor block at the back of the hotel very pleasant, large, clean,a safe, fridge with free water, T.V. comfortable bed and pillows, hot water. The only comment would be that the bath with shower could be updated. The grounds are beautiful, well maintained and the gardeners took great pleasure in their areas, also so friendly, but all the staff are. When we arrived there were free surfing lessons in the pool for adults and children, plenty of room still too swim, great entertainment for onlookers, plenty of sunloungers and good service from pool bar. There is an adults only pool with sun loungers, minus point the wind blows the fumes and smoke from the pool kitchen over the area, suggest some type of cowl could be fitted to rectify this. The breakfast in the large restaurant was busy but there were plenty of choice including egg bar. We had dinner in the restaurant the first night which turned out to be not good,I made a complaint to the duty manager who took the price of the bad meal off the bill. BUT THE NEXT DAY I received a phone call from Mr Haruna the executive chef who asked about the problem I had, he then offered us a a meal in the Pavillons restaurant which he said he would cook!!! we took up the offer and when we went down we had a decorated table set up in the garden beside the sea, the meal was excellent and Mr Haruna could not do enough, THIS IS WHAT I CALL SERVICE, a hotel really trying to make their customers happy. We also had breakfast in that restaurant in the morning very quiet and laid back with tree squirrels to watch playing amongst the palms. Yes there was some building work, but it did not start till 9am and was finished by 6pm and it was to the back of the hotel where we were staying and we did not hear it. Outside the hotel are plenty of shops and restaurants but very busy and noisy. We would go back again as Bali is a beautiful country with very friendly people. We certainly stay at this hotel again. Avoid Kuta unless you are young and into Bingtan beer.

The breakfast is fantastic, and many of the staff excellent.... But after reading the previous reviews this was a huge disappointment. The room decor was very tired. (Air-con gasping its last - dripping taps - very soft bed with broken springs - etc.) Hence the building site - the hotel is upgrading rooms, but staying open at the same time. If you like to relax and listen to hammering and power tools then this is the place for you. The check-in staff were quite clueless when it came to my booking and messed up the airport transfer... As hotels in South East Asia go, this is very poor value and nothing special at all... Avoid.

Room Tip: Look at another hotel.
