This place is a joke. Let me tell you why.
Ambience: It's not an enclosed dining area and as such diners are subject to the stifling heat and humidity of Bali. Works well at the beach but not so much for a place that touts a sensory dining experience and markets itself as fine dining. It needs more fans, at the very least. It had pretty ponds outside, though. As for the crowd, expect the average foreigner dressed for the warungs along Kuta beach. Ladies, leave your stilettos at home and disregard the dress code mentioned on the Metis website.
Food: Underwhelming to say the least. The triology of Foie Gras was tasteless. A few dishes were swimming in butter and underseasoned. I understand chefs using butter to make things taste better but a good chef wouldn't put a dish of ravioli literally swimming in it (and slowly congealing) in front of you. The escargots reminded me of pencil erasers and were smothered in a heavy, thick sauce. The worst part of the experience was an artichoke dumpling of sorts served with my main. It smelled like it was rotten. I informed the wait staff who kindly checked with the chef and informed me that it was normal. Now I've eaten artichoke, both fresh and bottled (this was bottled, I was informed) and this was not normal. I cannot begin to describe the stomach churning, bile rising dry retch that developed as I cut into the dumpling the first time to eat it. Is this what they meant by a "sensory dining experience"? I was not offered a replacement nor was it struck off the bill. Let me remind you, I told them it smelled ROTTEN.
The bread + butter and triology of creme brulee were the only nice things about this dinner. The staff were lovely too.
I can't explain why my review is so different from others. I can tell you however that my date and I are no strangers to dining, both fine and casual, here in Australia and overseas; and give credit where it is due. We held Metis to a standard that it deserved and unfortunately it fell very, very short. I will never, ever, recommend this place to anybody.
