This was my third visit to Bali ASLI, the first one being when it was newly opened & I did the cooking class ( which is absolutely top notch & loads of fun too!). On both occasions I have chosen the Megibung menu for my lunch option, which means you get to sample all of the day's dishes - an excellent way to taste-test everything whilst sharing with a friend. Which if course, is what the word "Megibung" refers to - "casting all enmity aside & bonding over a meal"!
The staff are very attentive, and it's a delight to chat with Penny the owner & chef, and to see that all her hard work has paid off & that she's been able to achieve her dream.
The views are " to due for", with a sweeping vista from the top of the hill where Bali Asli sits alone, and each visit has presented me with a different view of Mt Agung, whether its sunny & clear, or misty & mysterious.
The wide open balcony doors usually offer a cooling breeze as well as the wonderful views, but do ensure that you dress lightly as there is no air-conditioning.
The food is always freshly prepared & sourced daily from the local area, so the menu changes frequently, but always "showcases" local Balinese flavours & foods. Delicious indeed! The food is cooked without electricity, so wood fires, steamers & cooking over the coals are the methods used.
Whilst dinner is not served here, I believe that a "Sundowner BBQ" is offered once a month, and the venue can be hired for a function as well. So the usual opening is for morning tea, lunch & afternoon tea.
There are a range of fruit beers. - my favorite being the snake fruit beer - such as mango, ginger, pineapple, etc, and the cocktails are made with Arak, sourced locally & authentically pure!
I also love the way that local materials have been used to build the restaurant, & the hollowed-out bamboo balcony railings are quite a feature. Don't forget to visit the bathroom, with its own views of the valley!
It's certainly worth the trip here, with your Balinese driver being given a complimentary lunch in the bale on the balcony. However, if you do the cooking class, when you get to eat what you've made, then a complimentary pick up is offered to the Candidasa area.
Great food, great views, great staff, great restaurant!
