“Great atmosphere. Very good steaks!”
I had noticed the new Stoney River restaurant when in Towson, some time ago, and wanted to try it. We had a family dinner in honor of our son's 21st birthday, since he loves steak.
First, parking was quite the challenge. The garage was very busy on this Saturday night and it took nearly 10 minutes to get to a level with empty spaces (the very top). If we didn't already anticipate an expensive meal, it might have been worth the time savings to use the Valet service.
I called ahead to get a table, and was given the impression that they don't do typical table reservations, calling ahead gets you a slight priority in line for a given time. I was told that there might be up to a 20 minute wait once we arrived for our 8 pm seating. The hostess also asked for my phone number (this became important). We arrived at the hostess station at around 7:40 and were told that the current wait was an hour, but that we should check back at 8:10. I'd expected a delay, so we wandered up to Sur le Table.
As we explored the kitchen gadgetry, my son heard my cell phone ringing (it was still before 8). I answered, and was told that our table was ready! WAY better than those light up buzzing "coasters" used in many restaurants these days.
Having read reviews, I checked out the menu online, and made a plan in mind for my meal. Salad, then steak and potato. My husband chose a bottle of wine with help from the server. My son was asked for his ID.
We all ordered salad as a starter. Son had checked out the online menu too, and was set on the coffee cured filet. Our daughter wanted seafood, so she chose salmon. My husband ordered the 10 oz filet, and I ordered the 12 oz prime rib, medium rare.
After we finished our salads, our entrees were brought. The server suggested that we cut into our steaks to confirm they were cooked as desired. My son's was too rare for him, as was my prime rib. My steak also looked a bit on the "cool" side: The visible fat was white, rather than translucent, and the center looked decidedly red/raw. Our two plates were whisked away... and returned in about 5 minutes. Son was satisfied with his. My steak appeared to have been simply dunked in au jus. The fat didn't look any "warmer," but the steak looked a bit more cooked, somehow. I decided to accept it.
It did taste very good, if on the salty side. The au jus tasted like it came from a can. But that's typical. As I got into it, my steak really hadn't been cooked any more, just been dunked into hot(?) au jus. That was a sneaky thing to do.
My son RAVED over his filet. My husband's filet was also delicious. Our daughter was delighted with her meal also. She had the lemon caper butter as her sauce and it was yummy on the green beans as well as the salmon.
Our table was situated directly in line with an exterior service door for the kitchen/service area. We got hit by several great gusts of cold air from outside, as employees used that service door. There should be some sort of barrier to block outside air from the dining room, especially in winter. Or use of that door should be restricted.
As we ate, various employees and manager-types stopped by our table to ask if we were enjoying our meal, but I got the impression that they really didn't want to hear what we thought. It was how they asked... hard to define.
After our dinner plates were cleared, my son was brought a big slice of triple layer chocolate cake (with four forks). He was surprised and delighted. Especially when the server said, "Don't worry, we're not going to sing."
We'll probably keep Stoney River in mind for the next time we want red meat. Perhaps we'll do lunch next time.
