“Simple but beautiful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

I described St Francis Church in Fort Cochin as plain and unspectacular. The Church of St mary’s in Champakulam is the opposite. The building are simple but very beautiful. The church was supposed to have been built by the Portuguese in 1579 on the site of one of the 7 churches founded by St Thomas the Apostle in the 5th century. Now a Syrian Christian church the interior is described by the Rough Guide as ’extravagantly decorated Rococo, dripping with gold leaf and elaborate murals – some fusing elements of Hindu and Christian iconography’. It is spectacularly located on the banks of the wide River Pampa and it is a stone’s throw from where the houseboats dock in Champakulam. On our second visit there was a service in progress and the music and singing were enchanting. The women all stood on the right side of the church, the men on the left. When what sounded like a sermon started everyone knelt on the matting.

“427 AD(1600 years old)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

this is the perfect example of "old is gold"...... what a marvel on the bank of River Pampa. We stayed in Triveni River Palace opposite to the church over the river and happened to get don for a small visit to the local church, i thought it would be a usual church but we were surprised by Mr Jacob our Guide from Triveni River Palace's information. The painting of the ceiling of the church is excellent and ones su go to this place its like attaining complete peacefulness. Its a must visit place if one is visting this part of the world

“Heritage at its best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2013

One stop at this church transforms you this beautiful church which is 1600 years old i.e 427 A.D. There is a long history behind it and its a the mother of all the churches in Kerala.

The best thing about this church it is on backs of backwaters and it easily reachable. There are many resorts and home-stays nearby.

“St Mary's Forane Church Was Temple for Us”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

We embarked on a motor boat cruize from The Emerald Isle , Kanjoorparmbil - Manimalathara , Chathurthyakary , Alleppey at 0800 on 20th Dec 2012 for 1500 years old St Mary's Forane Church established in 427A D on the bank of Pampa river at Champakulam . It is under Archeperchy of changancherry of the Syro Malbar Church and controls almost all Syrian Catholic churches in Alappuzah District. This is a second generation church of St Thomas Christian churches in Malbar which were formed from the seven first generation churches formed by St Thomas himself.

As the church was patronized by the Devanarayanans of the Champakassery kingdom and had very close relations with the Ambalapuzha Sree Krishna Swamy Temple some Hindu traditions such as removing the foot wares before entering the church , sitting on the mats on the floor or standing while hearing the discourses and presence of Dhwajastambh i. e . Flag Mast made us feel weare visiting a Temple.

Madbaha and its decorationsare influenced by Portuguese culture . side walls of the Madbaha and the ceiling have eye catching murals , depicting blue sky , angels blowing trumpets and emerging through the clouds , etc . were paintedwith vegetable colours.

The antique decorated baptismal vessel and a traditional pulpit in the form of a palm tree supported at its base by a trunk like pillar curving into a mouth of a fish set in the wall are other two things to be adored.
