“Understandably an award winning home-stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013

We spent 3 nights at the wonderful emerald isle. We heard it was one of the best homestays in India and it didn't disappoint. The building is a gorgeous heritage conversion; every room has its own character and is decked out in original stylish fittings as well having an airy roofless bathroom.
The surroundings are peaceful and host Vinod will bend over backwards to organise any excursions to the town that you might fancy. You can enjoy delicious home-cooked Keralan specialities together with the other guests under the mozzie net as the sun goes down. Ask about a cooking demonstration if you want to find out more!

Vinod and his team really did pull out all the stops to make our stay super special, from delicious nutmeg drink and tour of the grounds on arrival to the free upgrade to the best room (see if the granary store is available, grand bed and outside shower!) this one night stay was a special treat following a frankly underwhelming houseboat trip the day before. The food was unbelievable and al fresco dining area a treat. Took a walk to the church and met some ultra friendly locals, ask for a map!

Stayed here for our final 2 nights in India....on a cycling tour with Kalypso Adventures. We arrived on bike, but many people arrive by boat....the main road is not far from the other side of the river.
The house is a traditional wooden Indian villa...lovely dark wooden walls and interiors. There is a lovely garden with hammocks in the back garden, overlooking paddy fields. The rooms are well air conditioned....and need to be because it can be pretty hot & humid here. The dining area is alfresco....but thoughtfully netted off....so no insects to bother about. The food was wonderful, and the staff attentive.
The river is at the foot of the front garden, and it is very easy to wander round the canals and say hi to the local people. There is a temple just a nice walk away.

It was an nice experience arriving at the Emerald Isle via their country boat. It makes u forget your stressfull city life and u get to start enjoying the true village life.

The Heritage Villa is an luxury accommodation amongst the natural surroundings & village life. It is surrounded by river on the front side and green paddy fields at the rear.

The rooms are excellent, the bathrooms are unique-open to air showers, the food is excellent and the service is prompt .

The property is quite big, one can walk around, lie on the hammock, or walk along the river or u can take a cycle ride

The Hosts Mr Vinod & Mrs Lismy are hospitable and very caring, making sure our stay was as comfortable as possible.

The cultural evenings is quite colourful.

Looking back to stay at this place again!!!!!

Regards
Hemanth Gogia

Had a great time when i visited this place a few yrs ago and hence decided to stay during my recent trip. The place now looks even better and better amenities and choices of activities are also more. Or if one want to (like me) lie on a hammock and enjoy the tranquility.
The food remain outstanding and offered a good variety of kerala cuisines. Sunset is beautiful and the netted dinner area is a real magical.

We arrived via river taxi to the sleepy homestay. It is a beautifully kept house and grounds on an island in the backwaters. The family who run it are lovely and the guests interesting to a fault.

Take the time to visit the rest of the island, on the provided bikes and get out on the backwaters in the canoe. You have to take the boatman with you but if you make it clear you want to paddle it is a much less weird experience.

The mosquitos came out for half an hour in the evening when it a very good idea to retire to your room. After that time you dine with the other guests and the owners under a gazeebo in front of the house.

Room Tip: The cottage is great as it is set apart from the rest of the buildings and has a hammock out the bac...

Emerald Isle is right on the backwaters and you are collected from your car by boat and taken across. We had the little cottage which is very private, has an outside shower and its own garden. We would recommend getting the cottage if you can. The brothers who run the place are very nice and we had some long chats with them. Sam and Tom who work there looked after us very well.

We took the evening boat ride up the narrow canals, only cost £1 each. We helped row and saw lots of people coming home from work and school. The bird life is incredible. It is a very relaxing way to spend the evening.

Meals are taken with other guests and we met some very nice people. The food is very good and reasonable if you are not on full board. We booked independently rather than through a travel agent.

We took a trip into Alleppy but would have preferred just to laze around at Emerald Isle as it was very hot. We were so glad we chose to stay here as there is air conditioning in the room which is very necessary if you are not used to the heat.

There is a lady, Sonia, who comes to do massage, pedicure etc. She is very nice and did a very good facial and massage for me.

We would recommend choosing Emerald Isle for your trip to the backwaters, be sure to request the cottage.

Room Tip: The cottage is private

In the beautiful waterways and backwaters of the Kuttanad region of Central Kerala lies Emerald Isle, an exotic haven of tranquility, seemingly remote from city life, yet barely 10 kilometers from Alleppey Town. Tucked away on this delightful island lies the Emerald Isle Heritage Villa, an ancestral Country House set in 9 acres of secluded grounds – your Retreat into a Paradise of Peace. Emerald Isle Heritage Home is situated in an island resplendent with exotic flora, breathtaking flowers, myriad birds and butterflies to make for a memorable holiday, affordable and unforgettable. A truly wonderful way to spend your time on the banks of the backwaters of Kerala! Our house, dating back 150 years, retains its original architectural features, mostly in teak, with splendid wood carvings. There is also a fine Ara, the timber storeroom used in former times for the golden harvest of rice – golden because the island’s lush green paddy fields turn gold at the time of the harvest. Our property stretches across 9 acres including lush green paddy fields and fish ponds. All meals are served in dining room. Please ask us if you want to have any special facilities like Ayurvedic treatments or houseboat rides. Emerald Isle is ideal for those wanting to relax, sun themselves or getting away from it all. The tranquil air here is salve to frayed nerves and everyday tensions. Read a book or taste the locally harvested ’toddy’ fresh from the coconut trees ! When you tire of lazing in a hammock, or sunbathing in the courtyard garden, you can take a walk around the island, go fishing or have a swim. Emerald Isle Heritage Villa offers peace, privacy and pure relaxation. There are only 5 rooms (All Air-conditioned) for guests and each has its own en-suite Open-Shower bathroom with all modern facilities.
