Vasundhara Resorts was recommended to us by my cousins who had an enjoyable stay there. It is a 45 minute drive from Kochi city. As soon as we entered we were given a traditional Kerala welcome and asked to wait at the reception area while our rooms were getting ready. I was travelling with my father, my husband and my three year old daughter. Since we had arrived around lunch time we decided to have lunch before checking in. The restaurant was packed, seemed to be with a corporate group come down for a business conference of sorts. The spread of food was large but we didn’t find it exceptional in either taste or flavour. The service was good and the staff pleasant. Our requests were brought to the table in spite of the buffet setup and there was a provision of a high chair for my daughter.
On to the rooms now, rooms are well done with all amenities of a standard five-star hotel provided. The beds were comfortable, the décor charming and the view relaxing. Next we decided to go down to the spa and book a massage for the evening. All of us opted for a traditional Ayurvedic massage, since the spa was fully booked it was difficult for us to get a slot of our choice. The service was very professional, we met the Ayurveda Doctor and he recommended the apt massage for us. This is something I definitely recommend to guests.
In the evening we went for a ride in a motor boat, this is a part of the package deal. You can also have a complimentary cup of tea and a snack at the “chai kada” or tea shop which has been recreated in the traditional Kerala style. After this, we went for a ride in the paddle boat and lazed for a while in the hammock enjoying the view.
In the evening I was hoping for some cultural show or entertainment but there was nothing much to do.
We started day two with a refreshing dip in the pool, there is a kiddie pool just two feet deep for the little ones. After that it was straight to breakfast, I stuck to a traditional Kerala fare - iddiappams (steamed rice noodles). We had some time to kill so we went to the indoor games area, we played a bit of Table Tennis, and there were also options for chess, caroms and snooker. My daughter wanted to go to the outdoor play area with a sandpit but it was very hot and humid so much to her displeasure we beat a hasty retreat from there.
We had booked an overnight stay in the houseboat, what hadn’t been informed to us was that the checkin to the houseboat was only at 1pm and the checkout was at 9:30 am which did make us feel slightly short-changed. The houseboat was ready for us to move in at about 1pm, I was really excited. It had two bedrooms with attached baths. A lovely towel arrangement in the shape of a Crocodile and a peacock awaited us on the beds. It was a cosy and comfy arrangement and quite an idyllic feeling to be cruising along the backwaters in the houseboat. We had a chef, a steward and a captain on board. The food was excellent, customized to our palates. The boat cruised along till 5pm after which we docked in what seemed like no mans land, what would have added an extra pizazz to the experience might have been an activity planned in the evening like a Kathakali performance or a village tour which I have heard are provided by other operators. After spending a quiet evening, it was off to bed. The next morning we enjoyed the ride back which lasted about an hour and we were back, sorry for our little holiday to have ended so soon.
